As a double bass player, I've been an inside, principal, and sometimes play alone. And yep, as an inside players you have to help the outside players so their playing won't be interrupted. And outside players indeed have much more 'burden', being the 'face' of the orchestra (double or triple that for the principals lol). So yeah, it's all fun if you know your task and do it well. Playing alone is fun too, unless your part's page break is messy and it's a fast passage... cursed are pianists and their page-turners! (Just kidding, I love pianist tho) XD

I would also add that you should really only write fingerings if it's completely necessary for complex passages. Fingerings should be written in your practice part only, since it may be confusing or annoying for your stand partner to write in their personal fingerings, especially if the fingerings are wildly different from yours, or just bad. Great video! All of these are totally true. Addressing conductors as maestro is always a safe bet, if they want to be called anything else, they'll make sure to tell you after you first address them as maestro. It's like using the formal case of languages, it's always necessary at first, but the person may ask you afterwards to simply use the informal.

A lot of good tips. Being a member of a local band, we have a few acceptable ways with turning pages: 1. When you have rests at the bottom of the page that runs for a few bars, usually this is not a concern. 2. When we have 2 players doing exactly the same part, we will accept 1 player playing louder to compensate the other player who would be turning the page until he/she is ready to play. It is generally preferable to have everybody playing all the required parts. 3. If there are rests on the next page shortly after the page turn, many of us would photocopy the first 2 lines of the next page and tape it to the bottom of the page so that we would be able to read up to the rest before doing a page turn. 4. If there are rests on the next page shortly after the page turn and the section you are playing looks straightforward, some of us would memorize notes on top of the next page until the rests and then do a page turn.

I'll watch orchestras more closely now to observe their etiquette. I love the interaction between Hillary Hahn and Maestro Pavo Jarvi in her performance of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto..... ultimate respect and obvious collaborative mindfulness. Maybe one day you'll post about etiquette as a soloist with a major orchestra, interaction with the conductor and the rest of the orchestra? Best wishes to you!

I think the reason for tip number 2 is the fact that the concertmaster and the conductor are the top 2 power controllers of an orchestra but in many cases if the conductor is not a violinist, the concertmaster would make the decision, which I am not really sure why because professionals audition for a chair and the first chair isn't necessarily better than the rest, they get some famousness, but in a professional orchestra, everyone is the best. But, yes in the case of a non-violin conductor, and the possibility of 20 violinists arguing, it is standard for the concertmaster to take on the role of decisions, this is probably good because when everyone is really good, in the end, someone has to make the decision, so it is standard for the person at the front to do so. Maybe the reason for passing the question up is for the concertmaster to decide whether the question is good enough to ask the conductor or answer it themself??

Good tips but I already knew these! I'm in college and we follow most of these in our orchestra. Even in the community orchestra. The one that most amateur groups neglect is section players speaking to the conductor directly. Many of us know it's a rule, but we don't implement it in our rehearsals. Although I still get a bit annoyed when someone interrupts rehearsal to ask the conductor a very useless question.

Are there any unspoken rules about only outside players can write stuff in, only write in it if it's your music, that kind of stuff? Because at an orchestra came I was at I was an inside player ans my stand partner didn't like it when I wrote in her music.
@ThatViolaKid8 жыл бұрын
I think that person was just weird. Most of the time, you're supposed to write in the conductor's specific instructions. Anyone who doesn't want to do that should just leave haha
@theflutecorner86185 жыл бұрын
Boy, life of a string player is so complicated! Piccolo players just need to stay in tune. And enter at the right spot. And, maybe NOT stop in the middle of their solo to write in an alternative fingering (don't ask me how I know that one, haha. It can get really embarrassing. And do not try to talk back and explain what you were doing. Just smile, nod and NEVER do it again) Another thing, don't stand up and try walking off the stage while the audience is still clapping regardless of how badly you want out of that building. 😂 Should be obvious. Also, if it's a pops concert, and you are sitting right next to the trap set, can't hear other instruments you are supposed to play in unison or yourself (on piccolo!) in the high register, walk off the stage with a horrible migraine, don't wait to tell your principal until the end of the last dress rehearsal. While things CAN be done to help take the edge off if you bring it up early enough, complaining about it 10 minutes before the show will get people upset with you, and that's it. The same applies to stage lights. It's always a problem due to the location of some of the players, and should be dealt with EARLY on. If you miss your entrance because you can't see the music, it's on you.

every music teacher should show this to new students, especially incoming freshman.....as a section lead it drives me crazy when new students go past me for silly questions i could have answered without disrupting the flow of rehearsal

I live in Columbia Missouri!! There is a good chance that I could've heard you play! Did you perform at Jesse Hall, or the Missouri Theater?
@ThatViolaKid7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I performed at Missouri Theater!

agreed, we need more violists! I'm a violinist myself but it's so cliche and half the people that start lessons never stick with them.

This is great to know, I'm auditioning soon for NEC's youth orchestra... don't want to piss people off. Also, can you make a guide to conservatory and how not to piss people off there? Thanks :D +1 subscriber to you!

You can stop playing during a run through if you're a string player 😉 as principal clarinet, I shouldn't stop playing lol, unless of course it's in a tutti/non-soloistic section
@ThatViolaKid8 жыл бұрын
Well, of course! But I don't imagine that you have many page turns during major solos. Editors would get NAILED for allowing that haha
@klimentmilanov8 жыл бұрын
wait, I thought the people on the outside turn the pages (like 2nd chair, 4th, 6th)?
@talulahsafir8 жыл бұрын
those are referred to as inside players
@ThatViolaKid8 жыл бұрын
Yeah those are the inside players man. Outside players are the odd numbers because they're closest to the audience
@klimentmilanov8 жыл бұрын
Ohhhh ok well that'll take some time to get used to, thanks!
