I lived on Unst for 18 months whilst serving in the RAF, the best posting I ever had and returned in 1979 to visit friends.

About ten years ago we spent a week on Shetland and from there made our way onto Unst. I drove our car to the far northern tip and had many fine, although short walks around the coasts of Unst. I remembered some of the sights from your lovely video. The most memorable place was that remarkable bus stop, the finest in the kingdom ! Unst is an unique, enchanting and rather special island and I so pleased that it also has a thriving community. Long may that continue !

I have really enjoyed your series on Unst and the Viking history film. I am spending a few nights in Unst this week and have found your films an excellent introduction for my own visit. I have subscribed and look forward to watching more of your films.

Not a drinker per se, but disappointed that Unst doesn't have a pub. Can't wait to bring my family to Unst to visit our Sinclair heritage!

You will be pleased to know that there is now a community bar on Unst, the Balta Light, which is open usually Wednesdays to Sundays.

People on the islands are always living a life better than us in the cities or suburbs - same goes here in Greece Thanks for sharing! Subscribe

A British person told me decades ago that the farther north one goes in the British Isles the friendlier the people become. There are exceptions, but to me that viewpoint is correct :)

So lovely found your video, I just came back from there a week. It was on my bucket list, and a heaven on earth place. ll be coming back again. I always have this question still in my mind that has been unanswered - where do people buy their food and groceries?
@philmorr3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, L J - glad you found my Shetland videos. We have just returned again from a fortnight in Shetland so I will be uploading more videos on the islands. To answer your question - no problem for people to buy food and groceries - there are two supermarkets in Lerwick, and many communities have a shop. On Unst there are three shops selling groceries which are always well stocked. People on the smaller islands can order groceries online or by phone and have them delivered on the ferries.

Could you tell us more about the bus shelter please? Why does the model bird have ‘Pankhurst’ on the banner he is wearing?
@philmorr3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Linda for this. This bus shelter near Baltasound is called 'Bobby's Bus Shelter' because over 20 years ago, six year old Bobby MacAulay and his friends decided to save the tumbledown shelter where they would be out of the wind and rain while waiting for their school bus. A new bus shelter was erected, and people started putting all sorts of items in it like sofas, cushions and carpets, and each year there would be a particular theme. When we visited, the theme was the Centenary of Women's Suffrage in the UK, one of the leaders of which was Emmeline Pankhurst - hence the name on the puffin's banner.
