In a way brakes do pump ever heard of something called ABS it pretty much causes the breaks to flash on and off so that you don't slide especially when cornering. This also creates a higher amount of friction than just holding the brakes.

Pump the brakes is one of the phrases that doesn't apply to modern cars. Kinda like "roll up the windows." Before cars had Antilock braking systems you had to quickly pump the brakes when making a sudden stop or your wheels would lock up.
