I have practised Shotokan Karate for almost 40 years now. I am a former EKGB Champion. I have watched many ofI this Budoka's kata video's. IN MY HUMBLE OPINION.... I find every single one of this gentleman's kata videos helpfull, technically good and very informative. I have a very straightforward message to anybody who has criticised this gentleman and his performance of Shotokan kata: Stop being an armchair warrior, shut up and get on with your own training . My personal message to the YUDANSHA in this VT: " Keep on doing what you're doing my friend...... Your kata videos are a credit to you. Best regards and. Osu Sensei Joe Moffitt

Many people want to perform kata with all the power and speed they can muster. That type of training certainly has its place in karate, especially in terms of preparing for self-defense However, I have found that I learn more from a kata when I go at this speed. It tests your balance, your endurance AND your patience, especially this kata.

Slow kata is harder than full speed, Most of the time. Thank you, Sensei for this slow version of Unsu. It has shown me where the kime is most effective. I have learned a lot.

Already learn alot of Kata and Kumite from this channel and from you. I truely appreciate for giving yourself time to make these wonderful and helpful "Online Session". Again, arigatougozaimasu-dogozaru~

You are not allowed to do unsu in a tournament at your level (beginner)
@daveroberts52147 жыл бұрын
In a McDojo maybe!! Unsu is a 4th Dan kata. Stick to kata appropriate to your grade i.e. Kihon kata or Heian Shodan. You won't have a clue what each of the moves mean. You probably can't even explain the bunkai for these kata, let alone Unsu which is one of the most difficult and technically challenging kata in the Shotokan system. I'm currently a Nidan going for Sandan next year and I'm only scratching the surface with Unsu, so either you are superhuman or you are attending a belt factory Mcdojo. Also, white belts in tournaments??? The only kata permitted at your beginner level is kihon kata which has 2 basic moves in it namely gedan barai and oi tsuki. I bet you can't even perform these basic techniques with correct timing and kime yet.

I like the version. One can really observe all the moves. It's a great help learning Unsu.

If there is one thing which is common among all commenters in Paul Walker's video series, it's that all of them have some interest in karate, in particular Shotokan Karate. But the similarity ends there. Now the differences: (1) Kids, and I mean kids, who literally heroworship the Sensei at the Dojo their mothers sent them to learn karate. They benchmark Paul's performance against their Sensei's but they are too young to understand substance over form. Well, what do we have to do? Let them be...they need time to grow up. (2) Kids who started quarreling between themselves in Paul's channel...I read those ludicrous comments, when suddenly, they became keyboard experts in not only Shotokan Karate, but also Muay Thai, Boxing, Aikido, Kungfu (Shaolin's version), and more, and because they are experts in so many LETHAL arts, their (online) opponent should just shut up, stop arguing and concede DEFEAT. Lol! (3) Adults who had just got their Shodan, who think they know better than Paul. This is a classic example of the proverb "Empty vessels make the most noise". (4) Adults who still have a long way to go in understanding "martial arts", not just Shotokan Karate but martial arts. (5) Adults (and some kids) who fully appreciate what Paul had done and gave him the credit he deserved. And I really think Paul was very kind and generous to share his knowledge online for free. The list of commenters of all shapes and sizes goes on...

To all of blue, orange or even white belts here: being able to memorize the movements' sequence and performing the advanced kata properly these are two, completely different things. This kata is intended for black belts because it's virtually impossible to perform it properly unless you haven't practiced karate (including simpler katas) for at least 10-12 years. If you think you've a superhuman gift for karate, maybe a bit of self-criticism or humility would do for you. Just record your performance of unsu on video and compare it objectively to the one above. There're so many interesting katas in shotokan syllabus which're more appropriate for beginners (even being a blue belt you're still a beginner).

In the Shotokan system Unsu is a 4th dan kata and therefore shouldn't be performed before this level. Kata is not just about performing a series of movements. You also need to fully understand the meaning of each movement in order to peform the kata properly. Therefore I'm sure all those white and blue belts claiming to be "towards Unsu" are just jesting :-)

@TesseractOrion11 жыл бұрын
Gomen nasai Sensei! Got carried away with my Nihongo 'learning' there (just started lol). Unsu (or Unshu) seems the correct pronounciation after all. Lots of Romaji I see (including 'Osu') seem to indicate silent or soft 'u'. Argh it's a complicated language.
