Have to mention that I’m from the U.S., not young (in my 50s), and do not think I’d ever heard the phrase ‘Ben Day dots’ before watching this video. If it was a preferred alternative to ‘halftone’ at one time, that seems no longer to have been so several decades ago when I was receiving first trade training in graphics and printing. Of course, everything was seeing extraordinary transformation then. Happy to have this new-to-me piece of industry history via your latest Unsung installment!

Your work in exposing graphic artists to the public is of significant importance Pete. I'm fascinated by the fact that the majority of the artists reviewed was born in the mid to late 19th century and retired or died by the early 20th century. The graphic art of late 20th century I find less ineresting. I wonder why this is. I'd be interested in your opinion.
@petebeard Жыл бұрын
Hello and many thanks for your comment and appreciation. When I started the series it was my intention to only feature illustrators of the golden age, mainly because it was the period I already knew the most about. But I opened the window up somewhat when I realised I'd have to leave outsome later favourites, and many of those were still working up to the 60s, 70s and even later. My only concern was that I didn't particulalrly want to include those still living, if only because their stories were not yet over. Most of us have a period and even style we hold in higher esteem than others, and if I had to choose it would be early 20th century children's books and humour, but in all honesty I can derive as much pleasure from something created later as I do from earlier times.

Erich Román, how genius he was in póster illustration! Sometimes, as you show us with his examples, we forget the quality of this films illustration in a no photography era. Art as one of the four pillars of human decency can be just as cruel and neglectful as the others: democracy, capitalism and Science. We have a long way to go to true civilisation.

@@petebeard A study of the basics, the human genome, our birth instincts, our neurological drug regime points to an attempt to _design_ a species of alpha prototypes to whom under-performance, criminality and neuroses are as unattractive as would be a preoccupation with status, fashion, food or politics. Hello, and thanks for the suggestion. But to qualify for this series the illustrators must be born between 1850 and 1910 so he was a bit too late. But he will certainly be featured as part of my series on the history of Italian illustration (when I finally complete it) and now you have got me thinking that if i can find enough information and good resolution images I might be able to give him a solo spot. For that series to qualify you just have to be dead. Fingers crossed..

Another fine quartet, and yet one that leaves me gloomy about the future. For the Northern legends so important for Sattler and Crane are discountenanced by the current intellectual Establishment. I have my own copy of the Nibelungenlied: I could wish for it some of Sattler's illustrations, but it is just a simple pocket paperback. Movies? (Rohman) Completely taken over by photography, and as for Comedy -- alas, there are too many dour force-our-standards-down-everybody's-throaters out there screaming "Offended!" (BTW, 'die' in German is always 'dee') I nevertheless foresee a possible Renaissance in about 10 years, when AI technology, processing speed, and falling prices might enable illustrators of this kind and quality to feed their creations into the computer and generate full, natural pre-union-Disney-quality stories! The voices for such are already here. There is (or could be) a market for that, and an independent and robust one! It might even forge a deeper bond between our youth and their past and culture in the only way they will tolerate!
@petebeard Жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks a lot as usual for your comment, appreciation and insight - even if as pessimist I agree with your bleak prediction. I look upon it as nature's way of reconciling me to the fact that with luck I'll be dead before the whole thing implodes. I certainly struggle to see anything good coming from AI. And yes the dee/die thing continues to elude me on occasion. As I've said many times it would be a lot better for all - and especially me - if everyone was forced to speak the King's English.

Very nice video, really appreciating the research that went into this, but the part about Dante's comedy being anything but and a "nightmare" was a bit misinformed. Comedy, in those times was defined as a dramatic piece in which good things happen to good people, bad things happen to bad people and it ends happily (as opposed to tragedy which is the complete opposite) Dante's comedy follows that definition to the superlative.
