Ardizzone's work reminds me of the playfulness of Sempe! Bergey! I've only been familiar with his pulp scifi work (I own a few issues), nice to see more of his work outside of that!

Just re-researching Edward Ardizonne and really enjoyed your info on him. He’s well revered by the head of illustration at Glos Uni who leads my MA illustration course.

Hello and thanks for your comment. It's good to know there are others who admire the man's work. Generally I think we Brits are pretty poor at remembering our great illustrators.

Ardizzone is another favorite of mine. I have his last book (didn't know that!), it's one of my best treasures of both the artist and its writer. I can now see adding many more children's books to my art book collection, to study and enjoy the illustrations just for my own pleasure these days.

Interesting, your mention of the great William Maxwell. His "All the Days and Nights", a collection of short stories, or of memories, really... It's something, and one never forgets reading it. He has a very gentle touch with words.

@@petebeard Not to be too... whatever it is, I believe that Charles Darwin and Ernst Haeckel ("The German Darwin") were both notable descriptive illustrators. For that matter, some large percentage of Da Vinci's art must have been descriptive illustration. I was thinking as well of Alexander von Humboldt, an early German (Prussian) natural scientist, who was a noted illustrator himself and, I recall, always retained professional technical illustrators to travel along and make records of the expeditions. I believe Darwin, in some part, intended to expand on Humbolt's legacy. Windy, ain't I.

@@petebeard Your hard work is greatly appreciated. I found it extremely engaging this go around. In fact, some seller on ebay owes you a commission because you caused me to hunt down one of the 1929 editions of Le Fanu's "In a Glass Darkly" with Ardizzone's illustrations and to buy it since I love Le Fanu and Ardizzone's work in the volume looks incredible!

@@petebeard I replied to this but cannot find it so will rewrite it here. I have no idea how the freesource works it was listed on another vid I watched. I've noticed it more than once; I watch a lot of true crime so it may have been on one of those. When I see it again I'll let you know which vid I saw it on; they usually list their sources below their vids. I can give you the titles of ones I watch most if you want them for sources. Could have been on an audiobook; I listen to many of those also. Let me know if you want the channel names; I only subscribe to below 50 it's all I care to manage
