to me, the "Orange Peel Test" sounds like a food tasting challenge, which would be much funnier. Instead, we have another relationship boundary exam that should stay a cute tiktok trend, but might be tripping people up along the way

Yet whenever my mom would complain about him, she would always include "...and he would never open my jars for me when my hands hurt, he always had to say 'what would you do if i wasnt here'" So yeah, no need for silly tests, it's more about your partner trying to help you when you need it and especially when it's not effort for them. It's funny that so many of these "tests" are adaptations of the 'bids for attention' theory (literally exactly what the orange, bird, and worm theory are) -- if your partner doesn't pay attention to the small things, they probably won't the big things -- psychology really do be misconstrued for the fun of it sometimes. The trolley is interesting morally though (oooh! ethics of our actions! spooky!)

Honestly, even though that one was staged I believed it the first time I saw it. Yea, its a little over the top, but I had an ex that would 100% act like that. He got mad at me because I would buy him gifts and food. One time he got mad at me because I asked him not to joke about domestically abusing me. Obviously, these are way worse arguments, but I 100% believe if I asked him to peel an orange for me he wouldve reacted that way.

I think what people misunderstand about the orange thing is that it should never have become a "test" There have been all sorts of poems/online commentary on how nice doing the little things for someone else can be, like peeling their orange for them or sharing half of it. Its not an end all be all TEST... simply an example of how love can be shown in small ways. Its so crazy to me that this happened cause like... the point is that you don't ASK....

About the shopping cart thing: In Germany (where I'm from) you have to use a real coin or plastic coin to be able to use a shopping cart, so even if I, for some reason really didn't want to bring back the shopping cart, I'd still do it because I'd want my money back. I'm not sure why we have it like that but I'm assuming people bringing back the shopping carts could be a factor for that.

The chilling thing about that last couple is how the guy can’t act worth a darn in any of his more cartoonish videos until the orange one, and suddenly he knows how to deliver that one flawlessly. Maybe this is just speaking to my own insecurities and hang-ups, but the fact that several of the big social media trends have been covert relationship tests, joke or not, is very disconcerting to me. Like, the idea that any gesture or favor I do in a relationship is secretly a means by which my partner can monitor and judge my behavior stresses the fuck out of me. I’m supposed to feel at ease with my partner, and I don’t want my relationship to turn into an Orange Panopticon.

to me the two stupidest things about the orange question are 1) if you ask me for an orange and we happen to have some in the house but you complain that i didn't deliver it already peeled thats on you. thats like asking for a sandwich and not specifying that you want it cut in half or without the crust. imagine ordering a burger somewhere and expecting them to telepathically know you want it with no lettuce 2) if we don't have oranges in the house no sane person, regardless of how much they love their partner, is gonna get in their car, turn on the engine, and drive to the store for one item if it isnt already grocery day. in this economy?

This reminds me of the ask vs guess culture spectrum that people at Metafilter came up with. Some people come from families/cultures where you're supposed to guess that you need to peel an orange without being told directly. Some people come from families/cultures where hints are non-existent and you ask a person to peel an orange for you.

There’s was a minute where I was having anxiety and panic attacks every night for a couple weeks. One time my fella went with me to take the trash down our MASSIVE hill during one of them because I insisted he not do it himself. I’m in a bit better health and usually he’s pretty winded by the time we get back. This time I was convinced my heart was going to explode. Despite him definitely being tired, he went behind me and picked me up (we’re also the same height so double effort), and let me lean back on him until I felt I could breathe again. I think if your relationship requires ‘tests’ then you’re just as guilty of not paying attention to what that person does for you.

this lives in my brain when i think of that challenge test thing. i cant push carts so i put my items in a basket or a bag so when people leave carts behind im like: yeah fair enough. when they leave the carts in walkways so that people in wheelchairs cant access the sidewalk it makes me upset though. i have to push the cart into a better spot, and im weak enough that its like a whole-body effort. it is a struggle. but people just leaving the carts in general: idc in summary: i like this comment. i agree with your comment 😭

The only relationship test I put stake in is seeing how they treat service workers. Are they nice to waiters/waitresses? Are they mean to retail workers? Do they look down on janitors? It’s more of a “how do they treat those around them” type of test over how do they treat me.

Some of these tests miss nuance. An elderly woman with mobility issues may struggle to return a shopping cart. An autistic person when asked for an orange may take the task literally and just give them the orange. I return shopping carts because I feel anxious seeing things out of place and don’t want the workers to have to do extra work for no reason. But I cannot know the reason why someone may not return a cart. Sure, it frustrates me, but there are a slew of reasons why someone might not be able to return a cart. Also there are other reasons why peeling an orange might be difficult for example if someone has arthritis in their hands. Autism can also make people have difficulty with conversations and how to react. I would be excited if there was a bird, because animals are a special interest of mine. But it would be hard to focus on something not an animal.

I’m about half way through the video and my biggest question right now is just: what does it mean for a relationship to succeed? Because my bf and I have been together for 3 years. Have we succeeded? Are we a successful relationship? We live together. We share my cat. We have plans to move in with his friend together. But we don’t plan on getting married or having kids. So what makes a successful relationship. Cause that’s what a lot of these little tests seem to be pushing for and I’m really curious. Cause that seems like something to know before you try and test for it.

1. i love the vibe of your videos. the atmospheric mario galaxy type music makes it feel great :) you are finding success for a variety of factors (obviously), but in my opinion, one of them is the synergy between the music/effect choices, your simple-feeling editing*, your choice in topics, your delivery of your scripts, and the messages you convey. * obviously your editing takes work, and i can see how much editing goes into them with the overlays and effects and the edited-in clips/images/text/etc, but its like "no-makeup" makeup, the editing adds to your main camera performance and isn't drawing a lot of attention away from it, rather than,, for example,, editing like kurtis conner's (both types of editing are good) 2. personally, it feels like im being manipulated when people do tiktok tests on me, so i wouldnt peel the orange. i occasionally have online friends who test me, one of them did a test where they ghosted everyone to see who would text them without being asked, but the problem is that they asked us all not to text them before doing that?? and then never updated us that it wasnt in effect anymore LOL. but yeah.. all those people tended to have other patterns of behaviour that i saw (like those people would NOT peel the orange and would NOT love me if i was a worm if u know what im saying) so that's just a thought i had while watching 3. i love this video. i hope u are well irl kuncan :) we dont know you irl so we dont know if u have any medium-sized irl problems but i hope u dont because ur videos make me happy and that means u should be happy too

Regarding the shopping cart theory, my favourite analysis of it is Théo Evan's video essay about it. In short... There are not so dire situations where someone may not be able to return a shopping cart, and there are also people who took it way too seriously. As for the bird watching thing, I'm almost sure it originated on tumblr? I could be wrong, but I definitely read tumblr posts about it, and there's such a different vibe to reading a tumblr post theorising about relationships and watching a Tik Tok explaining it very literally. Lastly... Despite being staged, that one Tik Tok did bring up an accurate point for me. I like to have very long nails so I sometimes have to ask the people around me for small acts of service I could have done myself had I had shorter nails. My friends would peel an orange for me! Perhaps with a lighthearted sigh. It's true that if someone refused, I would probably feel less happy hanging out with them.

I dunno, I feel like it isn't just an orange. The way I view it is that if your partner would never do small things for you like that, that it's concerning? At least for me. Like if I dropped something while doing a task or whatever and I was like "oh could you get that for me please?" And they said "get it yourself, you are capable of that" I would be pretty upset. Like just help your partner? If you don't feel like it, don't have energy for it etc, just communicate that. It's when they have an overly negative response to being asked something mundane that rubs me the wrong way. It's also about reciprocity. So stuff for your partner because you love them! Idk man

If you have to do these random tests to figure out if your partner likes you, maybe have a deep and honest conversation with them to figure out if y'all are actually as close and rooted in the relationship as you might think... Idk.

Imagine if you could do these tests on your siblings lmao. "Could you peel an orange for me?" "Yeah, sure" **Gets an orange, peels it eats it then gives you the seeds** "What the hell?" "You wanted me to peel it, you weren't specific about what I after, should've been more specific." "Would you still love me if I was I warm?" "I can't even stand you in this form. If you were a worm, I'd probably step on you."

One thing I do like about these tests is that I just talk to my fiance about them. The idea of actually testing him seems kinda weird to me, but I do like that they start some discourse about things in our relationship that we might need to work on or shed light on things that are great that we wouldn't have realised otherwise.

If you feel the need to test your partner like this, in a serious manner, I don't think you have a healthy relationship in the first place. It is indictative of deep insecurity, whether for good reason or not, and that needs to be addressed.

imo the biggest factor in deciding if your relationship is unhealthy is if you’re able to determine patterns of behavior. if your partner doesn’t want to peel the orange tht one time, it doesn’t mean that they won’t do things for you or that they’re a bad partner. on the other hand,if your partner peels the orange that doesn’t guarantee that they are a good partner. if you see a pattern of behavior one way or another, those r the signs you should be looking for

counselor in training here! fun fact: the bird thing is based on the Gottman method which like sure whatever those are words 😂basically it’s a sign of health if your partner responds to your bids for attention positively. most interactions we have are mundane like seeing birds, and if most of the time those little moments are pleasant, y’all probably get along. it really has more to do with partners’ general treatment toward each other and mindsets than the specific behaviors themselves. the real takeaway is, if you’re a partner to someone, be kind to that person and continue to grow into your best self ❤

So I'm an asexual trans man in a relationship with a bisexual cis man, and we've been together for 6 years. As far as the bird theory test goes, I don't need to do it because I see evidence every single day that he cares about the mundane things I'm interested in. As far as the orange peel test, also don't have to do it because, depending on the type of oranges we have, if I ask for one, it's brought to me peeled or cut up without me even asking (except cuties bc he knows I can peel them but when my arthritis is acting up or if I'm busy with my hands and I ask him to peel them he always does).

the video while i was able to tell from how he initially rejected her that it seemed fake and over the top (though still scarily realistic since i have parents like this), one thing that i noticed was the girl not acting super healthy either. the way the video is shown is in her pov and that he’s being unreasonable for not even doing that one little thing. i’ve been a pushover since i was a kid and it’s affected my relationships where i do too much for little in return, so if i had seen this trend i would’ve gone into my relationships further with the idea that i need to do every little thing for them. this trend cannot apply to everyone but again, i felt bad for the guy at first bc she did seem unreasonable when she said “you won’t even do this little thing?”. as someone who is nd and a pushover it kinda made me feel very 😵‍💫 i can’t explain. but i don’t think these are very good, especially if they’re fake.
