Feynman talks about path integrals and particles trying out all possible paths but finally choosing the easiest one with the least action. It could be that in the brain we go into superposition too when having to make choices but there is no clear path of least action available for us as conglomerates of particles because we are so complex and living in a complex world with other just as complex beings. There is no other way to avoid getting stuck than making a choice. The choice feels not "random" but perhaps it is.

i do wonder how he's sure that evolutionary conscious building necessarily means that consciousness helps survival. doesn't evolution allow for mutations and traits to be adapted and passed on that may actually have a negative function in relation to survival but that they could be emergent properties that arose out of survival adaptations that have a greater net benefit than the negatives provided by the emergent property? i've heard him say that indeed we may end up destroying ourselves.

It does and it doesn't. Do you think "I don't have free will" EVERY time you make a decision? No. You can look back afterwards and say it was determined but you live moment to moment, there's no possible way for it to affect you. Don't let it consume your thoughts and your fine. I see it as uplifting.
