The Green Goblin outfit they ended up using in the movie is the best in my opinion because it is neither too mechanical/robotic, nor appearing too much like latex in texture, nor did it have too much fabric on it, nor did it look completely like a plastic action figure. It looks like a balance of all the aforementioned qualities, though it could have used some CGI to enhance its look, but oh well, it was quite advanced for a 2002 movie and at least better than all of the other tentative designs.

The truth is that I have to admit that the creation of this incredible green goblin mask is quite a masterpiece, being more faithful and close to the comics, but the real reason why it was never seen in the light of day was because it was shown to the public. test audience including various children to see what they think and the result as you can imagine is that many of them were terrified and even traumatized for life by this design so the team at Sony had to reduce that to avoid this and the minors if they could see the movie, decide to change the design for the one we all know today, which I really loved a lot and I saw that a new modern green goblin fits very well for the time that marked an entire generation and I hope that be like this in many decades (psd: I understand children a lot but imagine if they had seen this in the movies and had been scared like never before in their lives, also that design did not even feel like it fits well within this version) n from spiderman which Sam Raimi decided to discard immediately) see you in a new spiderverse we won't be late and sayonara

If I remember correctly Dafoe didn't like it because it restricted what he could do in his performance. While we don't see much of his facial act, he wanted to be as physical as possible and do as many stunts as Sony would allow him before drawing the line. Gotta respect his commitment, makes me love the design we got even more knowing just how into it he was.

I heard the reason that the animatronic mask was ultimately abandoned (I think I read this in a magazine interview), is that it didn’t make sense that Norman Osborne would spend hours upon hours ‘suiting up’ in some makeup chair and applying a very complex costume before jumping onto his glider and flying out of his suite window or whatever. Ergo, all he needs to do is don that green ‘horizon glide’ flight suit and mask and he’s good* to go. While the costume that we saw end up on screen could have been more well-realized, I think conceptually it made the most sense for the character. *Well, you know what I mean!

The last design is good but it wouldn't have worked in the film because it doesn't fit Willem Dafoe's performance. It was quite a realistic take and that mask is very cartoony and looks almost like an alien mask.

Thew flexible mask shown last is the best and also the correct Goblin, the way Lee and Ditko created him. This is what should have been used in the movie. That mechanical, expressionless cyborg used in the movie was a huge disappointment (the fkg mouth doesn't even move when he speaks, instead he shakes his head up and down whenever he speak like a cheap hand puppet). They really messed up the Goblin in the movie. He should have been depicted true to the comic book like Sandman and Dr. Octopus.

I like the movie version a lot better because it somehow made Goblin more human, sure, you didn’t really see many expressions, but at least when you looked through the helmet eyes you were met with Willems and it made the performance that much more personal. While I REALLY dig this, and I’m sure it worked well for the comics, for the vibe of the movie it just seemed less technical and more fantastical. I liked that they kept the same idea for the one we got for the body of the suit. Also.. not going to lie, if I’d seen this version of the Goblin as a 10 year old watching this movie I would not have liked it at all. It’s very creepy- I’m in my mid 20s now and I love creepy stuff but as a kid it would have been too much. The EYES man, the big balls just * shivers*. I do like the way the mouth is able to move and expressions are easy to capture though, that’s one thing that the original mask just can’t do. Though I rather liked how Norman had to actually lose the mask to make personal connections with his enemy’s- that certainly added a layer to the whole thing that I loved. They made it a whole multiple personality kind of thing and I think that the stiff unchanging mask really worked for that aspect of his character.

Yes. Late into having signed onto the roll, DeFoe decided he was too stressed from being under rubber for "Shadow of the Vampire"... and we got stuck building the Green Power Ranger you see in the final film. They stuck a sad look on the makeup you saw here, and we built that BMX suit while the real design looked over our table... sad that his whole history had been erased by one tantrum, after the fact of design acceptance. One of the sour points of my career.. GG was my favorite villian design from childhood... and we got to make a glorified Power Ranger in BMX garb. Brilliant. 😕😂😂

Man l wish they could've written a way for the costume @ 2:40 to work like if the suit was made more pristine and got dirty, torn and more decrypted with time as his mental state deteriorated and he was terrorizing ppl on the streets and maybe something like an accident at the lab like an explosion or an acid spill occurred when he took the serum and went crazy made the mask, costume and cloth melt and burn to make it look more decrypted and creepy like it does there
