This clip is from the 1987 UK Championship. Alex is playing his old foe Steve Davis in his first appearance since his ban for headbutting a tournament offical exactly a year previous. Here in frame 4 he plays a shot that you rarely see, deliberately using the angle of the middle pocket to snooker Davis. A clever shot that proves Alex wasn't all about crashing balls around the table.

I grew up watching Alex. He made snooker what its is today. he alone, made everything possible. As a player he was a genius and as such he was extremely unpredictable in the extreme. His nemesis Steve Davis once said that only two players scared him. These were Cliff Thorburn and Alex Higgins. Thats a massive accolade. I will never forget Alex's comeback from 8-0 down in the UK final to beat Davis. Alex. A hero of mine. Thanks for the marvellous memories. Thanks for making snooker.

I think the magic of Alex Higgins was also his Achilles heel in terms of winning tournaments, in fact when he lost to Cliff Thorburn in the world championship final he even admitted it, trying to please the crowd rather than playing safe when it was necessary was possibly what lost him the match! That said, it’s difficult to imagine how snooker would have evolved without him, he literally electrified the game of that there is no doubt!

Ye he was natural for just potting but had no position. Ronnie is the most natural gifted players that will probs ever lived. First century at the age of 9 confined 147 at the age of 14. Is 100% ambidextrous. Did a 147 on TV in 4mins 47seconds that’s insane and I remember watching it him tell the ref to hurry up. Snooker is a very hard game I practiced for years and my highest break is a joke. The thought put into every shot is insane you have to think a few shot ahead then pot and get the position for next shot. Then somebody like Ronnie makes the game look like a joke and he has his demons depression drug use family problems. And unless you seen him play you wouldn’t understand the guy can go to a game not even 50% and wipe the tablet goodnight. And when he on his game I feel sorry for the person playing him. His age now and he’s doing better than ever.

Apart from the commentator saying the result at the end that was a beautiful example of exciting vintage snooker. I must admit I enjoyed that 4 mins fifty seconds . It could of gone to any of the players . I have my faves and Davis was not one until I am now at an age where I can look back and realise how foolish I was because I have always been a people champion type person. But Higgins and White will still be more exiting to watch, or so I thought ........... Watching Davis now ..... Wow if he was a product of today he would be sublime ...... And how good could the people champs be if they had there egos pulled in a notch or two........ Excellent upload

Ooh, I became the 2000th 'like'. Can't understand the dislike ratio, this is clearly an unusual / rare shot to play a snooker off the middle pocket jaw, and worth a watch.

Great shot to pull that, what we in Glasgow Scotland call a "Chinese Snooker" where its the jaws of the pocket that has you stuck, so I believe it was meant, and one of the best "ha ha! Get out of that one Steve, oh and be quick about it!" Moments I've watched. God Bless Alex. I may have found snooker boring mostly, but your matches i'd watch not knowing what to expect. Obviously I'd be willing you on, and your tears holding your Wife/Daughter and Trophy is the one match i'll remember for a very long time. Such a talent, but like life, things evolve, nothing changes, except people get better, in saying that though, the "Prize Money" actually makes me want to very much dislike these folk. I mean whats the top prize at The Crucible these days? Ridiculous no doubt, but why the change? Why start upping the prize money so that just being good at potting round balls on a carpeted dinner table somehow gets you a pad in say Monaco. Oh theres The Rocket at thevside to watch here, I'll not watch that tosser. Gets caught out driving in his dressing gown, with some of the other sex in his car, probably full of cocaine, Dads in jail doing a lifer, running big porn business, but his boys a wanker, and yes id tell him to his face, that hes just an immature little 'whatever', you choose. I dont watch it anymore, I only ever watched this "sport" as Grandparents watched it, so I did too. Saw a few firsts, Darts I like,, saw John Lowe do the "9 Darter" live, saw Thorburns first 147, last game I watched was Rocket man here, and he asked the referee "how much for a maximum" he was told £4000. He left the last black ball on the table in perfect position, only to think "screw that, £4000, imna spoilt little brat, so im leaving the black where it is, huuph!" Till the ref stepped in and said "you deny this Glasgow crowd a 147, then there'll be a riot" So still trying to prove something, he slammed the black in, as if to say "well you wanted it potted that much, I tried to smash the back of the pocket" oh and talking about pockets, his must be full to not even bother with £4000. You maggot, if it were me, id have done it, gracefully and gave the money to the first homeless people I met in doorways. Yeah yah fucking nobody, as you are a nobody, you've known richness all your life, never been poor, infact where did you learn your craft? Probably on a snooker table at home, thought so. All built on masterbation. "You wanna toy son, ears a snooker table, if yah don't like it, tough" No empire here, just sleaze, coke, no charges,, yet probably signs autographs to get away with speeding. You are the true Rocket we talk about in Glasgow. Yah stoater! Sorry about some of my grammar, but for some reason my keyboard forgets to seperate words, put in commas and exclamation marks, it's a nightmare, as I take care, and I should not have too, but I do. So moan at my Samsung Tablet, it leaves me needing some diazepam at times. Ta ta....

I've always known a "Chinese snooker" as a situation where you have to awkwardly bridge over another ball in order to hit the ball on. Not sure how PC that term is these days though. ;-)

I met Alex (one of my heroes) at a bar on the Lisburn road in Belfast. I think the bar was The Huntsman, or something similar. I worked up the courage to go up and say hello. Told him he was a legend. Imagine my surprise when he told me to f*$k off. It never changed how I felt about him, strangely.

That was a lovely shot. Annoying as hell to be on the receiving end of a snooker like that, with only two balls on the table. Effectively a one ball remaining snooker, given how the black doesn't really affect the situation. And you would not have odds on getting a snooker with only one ball on the table. Very creative thinking to take advantage of the table like that, and not at all easy to achieve.

Flavius Constantius Davis developed an all round game that was tough for anyone to deal with - very solid and consistent, good potter, good safety and good positional play. Higgins was a genius, pure flair but could be erratic and the drink and drugs didn't help. Davis was relentlessly consistent and wasn't on a self-destruct mission. Higgins is probably the most exciting player ever. For me only Jimmy White and Ronnie come close but there's a wildness about him that gives Higgins the edge. The suspension killed his career as an elite player. Full respect to Steve Davis, even though they didn't get on (mainly because Higgins absolutely despised him) he still went to Alec's funeral, understanding that without Higgins he could never have had the career he had. Many top players didn't bother despite how much they owed him. Davis did.

I met Steve Davis in 1990, he came to RAF Swinderby to entertain us, he played a couple of games with the station commander and staff and then went downstairs to play the recruits. Steve signed hundreds of autographs that night, However, I hated the evening as I was staff and the staff bar there was about five of us and it was boring as hell, so we tried sneaking down to the recruits area, but we had a pain in the arse corporal on duty whom kept sending us back upstairs. I was not a fan of snooker and my mates whom were fans of snooker were jealous that I had met him.

His brain worked differently to other players. I once heard him co-commentating, and he was describing really complicated shots, he would be playing in a particular situation, and the player would play something really simple. He saw shots, and angles, that nobody else could see. Absolute genius.
