This has taken me about 2 weeks so far but i've almost got it. Can play everything at full speed but the fast run, which ive got at around 85% speed right now. In maybe two more weeks I'll be able to play it all without a mistake

Mike (or somebody who monitors these comments from guitar world, if you do, please forward the bottom paragraph of this to him) I'm not a guitarist, but I really love fingerstyle music and it is cool to see all the techniques used to produce different sounds, sometimes really subtle differences like the open closed strings above the top fret with the body percussion technique. Like any previously unknown awareness, it increases greatly my enjoyment of the music to know something about how it's done, even if I'm not capable of reproducing it. Thanks for these, Mike. I also have a suggestion. Have you ever thought of routing in some (V?) grooves into your "scratch" board up there in a small area or on one side, that you could utilize, washboard style, for another sound. Might even be interesting to have different spacings, one low frequency path, and another higher frequency (octave, thirds(s), fifth(s)) for multi nail percussive "chord" "strumming". Just a thought, always coming, as an engineer and music enthusiast. It would be easy to gen up a thin board that you could just stick on an old guitar to see if it would be of any use. I would be glad to do this for you to try if you wish, or a good tech or woodworker should be able to do this for you. Could be great, could be junk, but interesting to explore, maybe?

I'd like to know the string gauge to get to that tuning
@infinitesentient3545

I'm using a set of 10's on mine and it works. If I attack the C# too hard it gets a little warbly but not so bad I can't work with it. playing the lesson itself.......that's another story. I'm attempting to learn this type of playing after 20 years of playing in standard tunings and being more of a rock style player. Feels like I'm brand new at guitar all over again, lol
@lucianodebenedictis6014

Infinite Sentient yeah I particularly enjoy mike's videos because they let me see another way of paying guitar that seems just as cool if not more. Back to strings, ok you say it's doable but some strings will be definitely loose. I think he uses some custom gauge made by mixing and matching different strings. If you're into it you could try getting single strings for the ones that are particularly detuned, either a thicker one or a lighter one of the next string
@infinitesentient3545
@infinitesentient3545 6 жыл бұрын
I'd tell you specifically what gauge each string is, had I kept the package. For me the only one that feels a little loose at all is the C#. I wish it was easier for me to get strings but I am disabled, so there's a fixed monthly budget that I only occasionally free up enough money to do things like that. I'm happy to finally have new strings for this acoustic. It's had the strings I bought it with for 3 years now. Sounds great, I just wish the truss rod mad any difference in the neck. Some of the fancier stuff is out or reach because of string height. Jeez, I wish I had as much guitar instruction available in my early years of playing as people do now. I might have achieved my goals in music. I can at least record easy thanks to technology. That helps me deal with my old ass, lol.

Infinite Sentient sorry for that. Regarding the action, are you sure it's the truss rod, and not the capo or the bridge? It's pretty easy to check
@infinitesentient3545
@infinitesentient3545 6 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the sentiment. Music helps me forget I'm broken :) I thought I would get SOME movement out of neck with the truss rod but it didn't do anything. The saddle looks like it could be lower but I've never done anything like that, so I'm not sure how without damaging anything. It is just a $50 guitar. "Johnson" brand. I'm trying not to expect too much. I do wish I could play "Dee" properly on it. The first position at the 12th fret, plinks out on me. The rest is fine as I move back down the neck. I thank you for taking an interest in my plight.

you don't get C# and Ab in the same key. the Ab would need to be called G# if you're in the key of C#minor - and the Eb needs to be called D# if you're in the key of C#m

It's pretty well explained in the video. I know tab helps but maybe just watch the vid a few times in a row. Good luck with it :) Even if you have trouble with the lesson, it's a nice tuning to play with.

I'm curious. Were you able to manage that first position? Where you fret the top 3 strings while bridging over the bottom 3 so the harmonic can ring out? My finger wont bend that way so I keep borking the harmonic. I just figure Mike is double jointed or something, lol. I just decided to take what I could from the lesson and write something of my own with the tuning.

If you see closely he's playing the harmonics on top three strings with his pinky on the 12th fret.
@infinitesentient3545
@infinitesentient3545 6 жыл бұрын
We're referring to top and bottom oppositely. My reference to top, always starts with the low E string. Using your reference point; I can't seem to fret the bottom 3 and not mute the top 3 with the lower part of my finger, so that when I hit the harmonic on the 12th, it's muted out. Thank you for taking the time to try and help me :)

I can't fret the first 3 strings and not touch the bottom 3 in order for the harmonics to ring. My finger doesn't bend like that! Screw you and your double jointed bullshit! jk Thanks for the tuning and the neat concepts even if I can't bend my finger all gnarly like that XD
