The scene that stays with me was the end of his funeral. His coffin was placed in a train and filmed from above so you saw the steam blowing as the train chuffed out of London to go to Bladon. As the train passed the London docks every crane dipped to honour him. Very moving.

People misunderstand Churchill and think he was some kind of Engerlund Engerlund Engerlund gammon Brexiteer. Absolutely not. Churchill was very pro-Europe and would have been in favour of things like the EEC if he'd been alive to see it. His image was also hijacked by the BNP who totally misportrayed him and he wouldn't even have been eligible to join the BNP even if he somehow wanted to. It was only really under David Cameron that there was serious Euroscepticism in the Conservative Party. Cameron didn't have the spine to keep those people in their box, hence the mess we're in now. He also rolled over for Alex Salmond and again there were consequences for that. The Conservatives have always been pro-Europe under Churchill, Thatcher, Major (and he put it on steroids), Cameron and Osborne also campaigned for remain in 2016 and lost their own jobs as a result, Theresa May was also pro-EU but had to drink from the poisoned chalice left out for her.

I am an American and Winston Churchill is someone I greatly admire. It also makes me feel good to know that he was very proud of his American heritage. It was something special to him. The man is a giant of history.

Hi Paul, thanks again for an excellent post. A couple of Saturdays after Sir Winston Churchill was buried, my parents and grandparents took me to visit his grave in Bladon churchyard. So many people felt the need to pay their respects to him, that cars were being parked in farmers’ fields over a mile away from the church. I was only a lad of fourteen, and it was wintertime, but I didn’t mind queuing for what seemed ages. Somehow we were doing what was necessary. Many years later I was driving a van through Bladon, and stopped to have my sandwiches by the church. It was so peaceful. He was still there.

Churchill and Thatcher were the _only_ former Prime Ministers where the late Queen personally attended their funerals. None of the other former PMs had any royal attendance at their funerals whatsoever.

Went to visit his grave last year, took a couple of foreign students, who wanted to see where he was laid to rest. Imagine there surprise, when the came up to that small beautiful churchyard, the asked why was he there, instead of his family home. I couldn't answer them really, but I think it's a beautiful place to be buried, and very very English. Perfect for him.

The parish of Bladon contains Blenheim Palace, and generations of Spencer-Churchills are buried in St Martin's churchyard. Churchill could have been buried in Westminster Abbey, but he preferred the simplicity of St Martin's, near his birthplace of Blenheim Palace. It was the 4 duke of Marlborough that had the church pull down and rebuilt. Also Churchill was only a cousin of the Marlborough’s and his Mum went into labour at a party at Blenheim. Hope this helps answers why ❤

@@annieanonymous611 Yes, you are right. There is a memorial stone to him. It was dedicated to him in 1965. It is a green marble stone, close to the Grave of the Unknown Warrior and was unveiled by HM The Queen on the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Such a beautiful peaceful place for his final resting place along with his adored wife “Clemny” and surrounded by his parents and other family members. I can remember as a child what a great impression he had made on the country with his latter contributions, and support of the Queen. I was just ten years old when he died, and sobbed my heart out watching his funeral on our little black and white tv. Even at that age I recognised someone great had passed on. We could do with his like again, but fear we never will. It’s nice that there is also a memorial in St Paul’s where his funeral took place, and can well imagine people being surprised that he is actually here in this beautiful little country churchyard. I know which I would choose given a choice too! Thankyou for all the research Paul..I didn’t know he died the same date as his father ! I’ve been to the Churchill war rooms in London, And I’ve been to the beaches of Normandy in France He was the leader the world needed at the time to bring everything together. That is simply not true. Churchill begged for help many times from USA until finally they were brought into the war. Without help from USA who travelled thousands of miles to help. We'd have been speaking German. Your comments are ignorant. For the record....Churchill was ready to surrender. After defeat after defeat etc etc Britain was on its knees. He changed his mind. It's that simple. Know your history. Ps I'm not German, as my name is historical, like many throughout history, who were born and live in the British Isles.

brilliant video Paul, I remember as a teenager watching his funeral on B&W tv and will never forget when his coffin traveled down the Thames and all the dockside cranes lowered their jibs. Many years later I traveled on the Orient Express from Victoria to Winchester in the carriage that carried his coffin , I think it was called Lydia. Keep 'em coming mate.

That's interesting so am i through my mother's blood line. My mother's maiden name is Tattersall. A few years ago, i was on the internet and stumbled upon some information that said that winston Churchill is one of the great grandsons of Baron Robert de Tattersall who was called to parliament and made a Baron. He loyally rode along side king henry III, in a war against the welsh rebels. Before that the de tattershalls originally came over to England around or just after 1066. This ties in with William The Conquerer who had two loyal companions that had come over to England with him in the autumn of 1066. One of the loyal companions was Eudo, who was descended from the de tattershalls. Tattershall Castle is in the village of Tattershall, Lincolnshire. William The Conquerer had given Lincolnshire to Eudo. Also, the Spencer family are also related to Baron Robert de Tattershall like Winston Churchill. In the information that i read about people related to Baron Robert de tattershall i read that Princess Diana was the 19th great grand daughter of Baron Robert De Tattershall. There are websites on the internet about Tattershall Castle and it is a functioning castle, where talks are given in the castle about it's history and about the the De Tattershalls. The castle is now owned by The National Trust.

The late Queens first UK Prime Minister. I lived in South Africa for two years. Literally a field away from where Winston was captured by the Boers in the Armoured Train incident. That was during Boer War.

I have family stories through a member of the family who was able to do genealogy while family members who got to know him were still alive. Oh Paul that was a lovely one, I remember I was about seven we lived on the isle of dogs opposite Greenwich, they took he’s body down the river right past were we lived, I’ve never forgot it I said to my dad who’s that he said a very great man he saved us all. I now live in chingford and in Woodford there is a massive monument just past the roundabout, as he was the m.p. for woodford at one stage.

WOW you’ve actually been somewhere I’ve been…my late brother took me there when I was about 12/13yrs old…he took me to Blenheim Palace and the bed he was born in…a stunning place to see if you’ve never been!!! I’ve had a deep respect for him from stories mum told me…like how he fooled our enemies in WW2 by placing cardboard cutouts of tanks positioned along the coast to make them believe we had a whole load of defence (which we didn’t really) upon when the enemies saw them all they surrendered and that was the end of the war!!! I think that was a genius move…risky to the extreme, but he pulled it off+I’m assuming won a lot of respect for doing so. After seeing where he was born, we went to that little church, but I don’t remember if we went inside+saw his grave, or not. I’m thinking maybe not as I’m sure I would remember doing so!!! I’ve never forgotten going to BP or the little church…it’s pronounced Blaydon…beautiful countryside around there too!!! X🙃❤️

Was told that He was Buried there, instead of Westminster Abby was "There are People in there I would not have Tea with!" By the way, having Visited Churchill's Birthplace, Blehahmn Palace, they will tell you a FEW Tails about Him. Thank You for the Video.

Big cigars and brandy certainly didn't damage his health considering how long he lived ( He said to one of his generals who had refused a drink by saying " No thank you Sir Winston, I neither drink nor smoke and I am 100% fit" Churchill's retort was typical of the man "I both drink and smoke and am 200% fit!" ) One of his favourite composers, The Finn Jean Sibelius was similar in his tastes, he also loved brandy, champagne and big cigars and when he celebrated his 90th birthday in 1955 Churchill sent him a big box of his own favourite cigars as a gift.

I have to say it was sad that you didn’t walk all the way round the family plot as you would of found his daughter. She died at the age of 2 and was originally buried in London. And then removed and interred in the family plot in Bladon (Pronounced Blade Don). Shame you didn’t go in as you would of found the Churchill Memorial window, was done to mark his 50 anniversary of his death. Easy to Google. We really do have a lot to thank Churchill for and I do believe I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for his leadership during WWll. I could chat on and be a nerd as this is my neck of the woods. Hi Paul, Thank you for another post. This man to me stands out for his great speeches, huge cigars, and status amongst world leaders during the war. I was 14 when he died, so history book's were really the source of information on his life. Just a point made in your viewer's comment's was he had a quick wit, which leads me to think smoking huge cigars and even larger brandies had a very low risk factor compared to someone trying to shoot you. The fact he lived to 91 supports this thinking.

People can say what they want about Sir Winston Churchill, but he was the best Prime Minister this country has ever had; many politicians have tried to emulate him over the years but not one has ever come close. He lies in a very beautiful spot.

Don't remembe much about Sir Winston Churchill I was only a kid in the 60s. He helped us in the war but it's a vague memory beings i was born in 1958 and history helps i guess. if it weren't for history we wouldn't know about these famous people

I was born in 1959 Nancy and I recall very strongly sitting in front of our black & white television set one cold damp day at the end of January 1965 and watching the State Funeral of Winston Churchill as well as the following of the train carrying his coffin to his final resting place. At the age of nearly 6 I didn’t know too much about his life and history but I did know that his leadership in WW2 saved this country and that he was a very important and respected person.

I went here in the 1980s as a young boy with my parents. It’s not far from Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire. I remember my father taking a few pictures of his grave. If I remember rightly, his grave is facing towards Blenheim Palace where Sir Winston Churchill was born.
