Todays Famous Grave visit, I go to see the Famous Grave of legendary Magician and comedian Tommy Cooper
Thomas Frederick Cooper (19 March 1921 - 15 April 1984) was a Welsh-born prop comedian and magician of Anglo-Welsh parentage. As an entertainer, his appearance was large and lumbering at 6 feet 3 inches (1.91 m), and he habitually wore a red fez when performing.

Hi. This is John Cooper, nephew of Tommy. Thank you for the video and kind words. I used to love going to visit Tommy at his house in Chiswick. As youngsters Vikki and Thomas, my sister Sabrina and I would have fun playing. I used to pick Tommy up as an adult to bring him to family functions. We would stop and many pubs on the way back to our home in Cookham. He loved meeting people in the pubs and making them laugh. At my first wedding, he had the waiters in stitches plus all our guests. After Gran died, Tommy died followed by his son Thomas, my cousin. I remember the press headlines of the COOPER CURSE. Then my father died so I decided best get out of the UK and moved to South Africa ( so far so good ). Sadly my sister Sabrina was murdered in Eastbourne last year which has left another hole in the family. Anyway, very proud to be related to Tommy and may his memory be a lasting legacy for comedy forever.

Hi Johnny, thank you so much for your kind words. Growing up, Tommy had our family in stitches all the time. He was an amazing talented and funny man. I’m so sorry to hear about your sister. That’s very sad news. Sending thoughts to you and your family after dealing with such a tragic event. I tell a few victim of crimes stories and they always leave me feeling so sad for the families as well as the victims. Thank you once again, much appreciated. Paul. 🙏

Yes I watched it too thinking it was part of the act - Cooper had an act which would sometimes be unpredictable and he would ad Lib so it’s understandable the audience was laughing as he collapsed that fateful night on stage . There was no social media then and it wasn’t until the late news that Sunday night and the newspapers the following day that we had any inkling as to what had happened to him. So sad but he gave people so much fun and joy in his act . He’s up there with Kenneth Williams, Frankie Howard and Benny Hill in my book

Tommy Cooper owned a holiday cottage in Motcombe Lane, Ocklynge - probably only half a mile or so from where you were stood next to his gravestone. Against the wall of that cottage can be seen a wrought iron black metal silhouette of the great comedian - complete with fez and magic wand. I know it so well as my grandmother had a cottage near by.

The only comedian who could bring the whole audience to fits of laughter without saying or doing anything. The world became colder on the night he passed away and I am sure like so many miss him dearly and always will. I met Tommy when I was about 10 or 11. His relative (I called her Aunty Vi) lived 2 doors away from us in Exeter. She invited us for Sunday tea, when he was visiting her - she knew that my Dad was a fan. My dad was crying with laughter as he performed some of his 'magic tricks' "Just like that"... and I was mostly oblivious and enjoying jelly and ice cream. I can remember that Aunty Vi actually resembled Tommy (she was 6ft tall) and her husband was a very slight man of about 5ft 5. RIP Tommy and Aunty Vi.

Tommy Cooper was a legend in his own lifetime. He was an extremely funny man - although I didn't appreciate his humour until I was a lot older - he only had to walk on stage and the audience fell about laughing; his tricks nearly always went wrong, which is the mark of a true genius. He died doing what he loved doing the most: entertaining and making his audience laugh; such a sad way to go, but most fitting. R.I.P. Tommy 🕯

Of course he had to learn the magic tricks to perfection before he could make them go wrong amusingly. And he was in the Magic Circle. Walking on stage, everyone laughed, like you said Paul, without him doing anything, it's a shame about his stone not being bigger and better kept.. Thanks for this one.

Seems a shame that one of the comedy greats is now resting in a somewhat overgrown cemetery and with such an insignificant memorial too? God bless him never the less and rest in peace Tommy!! 🙏 Thanks for the video Paul. 👍

Hi Paul, back when I was a teenager in the 70's I remember seeing Tommy Cooper at Bristol Airport I was going on holiday with my parents back in the days when you had to walk to the airaplane and looking across the tarmac was Tommy Cooper he wasn't close enough to talk too but I distinctly remember his face and and apart from being incredibly tall he had very large feet, he was getting on a small single engine plane, it was the first time I'd ever seen a Celebrity and even to this day it sticks in my mind, unfortunately Comedians of that time like Tommy Cooper are so easily forgotten and after all the joy he brought to people's lives it's a shame that his grave isn't in better condition.

I also watched the performance when he died. Everyone thought it was funny and part of his act as he slid down the curtain, I don't think he would be upset by that at all ? He was unique and an act that nobody has been able to replicate.

Some Tommy Cooper trivia. Although his stage and TV act portrayed him as a failed magician whose tricks always went wrong, he was actually an accomplished magician and a member of the Magic Circle. His sudden death, along with Eric Morecambe's inspired Ronnie Barker to retire at the age of 59, rather than work himself into an early grave. In May 2016, a blue plaque in his memory was unveiled at Cooper's former home in Barrowgate Road, Chiswick, London. He was offered the role of the Fakir in Carry on Up the Khyber (1968), but was unavailable. In August 2004 twenty years after his death, he was voted the funniest Briton of all time in a poll conducted by the Reader's Digest magazine. He was a member of the Grand Order of Water Rats. A statue of Cooper was unveiled in his birthplace of Caerphilly, Wales, in 2008 by fellow Welsh entertainer Sir Anthony Hopkins, who is patron of the Tommy Cooper Society. The statue, which cost £45,000, was sculpted by James Done. In 2009 for Red Nose Day, a charity Red Nose was put on the statue, but the nose was stolen. In a 2005 poll The Comedians' Comedian, Cooper was voted the sixth greatest comedy act ever by fellow comedians and comedy insiders. One of Cooper's stunts was to pay the exact taxi fare and when leaving the cab to slip something into the taxi driver's pocket saying, "Have a drink on me." That something would turn out to be a tea bag. He collapsed on stage while in the middle of his act on a live Sunday evening variety show, falling backwards through the centre of the stage curtain. As he began to snore loudly (often a symptom of a massive heart attack) and as his feet remained protruding underneath the bottom of the curtain the theatre audience assumed this was part of his "failed magic trick" act and continued to roar with laughter. After a few moments of confusion the orchestra struck up and the show went to a commercial. Although the incident had been seen live by millions of viewers at the time, the sequence was never shown again out of respect to his family and to his memory.

thanks again paul for taking us along with you to pay our respects to a much loved magician/comedian in tommy cooper, the famous saying by tommy was just like that, still resonates today with us, i still can see his assistant putting his cape on and a huge outburst of laughter when he said i dont feel well and collapsed on stage dying of a heart attack (just like that) one of the saddest moments ever to be witnessed live on tv so r.i.p tommy never to be forgetten

Appreciate the respectful video Paul of such a legend. I was born 1977 so was only a young child when he passed but remember it vividly as it was around the same time my grandad passed away. It was such a different time for those men and women born in the 20s and I often wish I'd been born earlier just to experience the way life shaped people of that era. RIp Tommy, RIP grandad and nan 🙏

Tommy was a legend in his own comedy style. The most stupidest trick could go wrong but it was so funny. I loved him. I was surprised by the state of his grave but maybe family didn't want to put anything elaborate which was a shame as he was so loved by so many. Another good video Paul x
