All of those injuries sustained in the 1st World War, and then he enlists in the WWII. Was a man! He had the sweetest face, in Dad's Army. It was fun to see him young and handsome, as well. And my word, what an interesting grave yard. Really old and gnarly.

I've got the whole lot too. Remember watching the very first episodes with Mum and Dad in the early 60s. There were three lost episodes from the early series but they were remade using a new cast, about four or five years ago. They are pretty good I have to say but would have liked the originals. Timothy West played Godfrey. They're on dvd.

Paul, what can I say! Even unexpected grave visits you manage to do them so respectfully and the information you give is eye opening. Never knew he did so many things like writing and producing. He was the quiet member of the platoon but a huge character because of that. His constant referral to his sister Dolly always bought a chuckle 😊. A great gentle man surely missed. Thanks for your tribute to him and let's hope more people visit his grave. Thanks Paul.👍

What he went through was incredible. If Paul's commentary had stopped at around 1920 one would have considered Arnold Ridley to have lived an adventurous life. Perhaps his experiences influenced the way he portrayed Private Godfrey.

Arnold Ridley's "This is Your Life" episode is an interesting watch, not least for a very "refreshed" John Le Mesurier. When Dad's Army was first broadcast the BBC were worried about how people would react to a comedy set in WW2. Back then, most people would have had some memory of the conflict at the very least. One of the show's writers had been in the Home Guard and drew upon his experiences when writing the scripts. Arnold Ridley lived a very fulfilling life, serving his country when called upon to do so and entertaining millions as a writer and an actor.

Dads army, aside from being a wonderful snapshot of a particular time in British history, is one of those shows to which other comedies should be held to in terms of standards. It was brilliantly written, and acted by some extraordinarily experienced and classically trained actors.
