London's stories of the North are great adventures (I am Canadian, Eh?). He made a cameo appearance in an old Star Trek episode, re time travel), can't remember which one. There's another Jack London tale similar to this one, wherein he contends with a starving wolf.

When I first read this story 30+ years ago I couldn't decide if Mr. London loved dogs, or hated them. I still can't. However I still dislike the protagonist just as much...as the writer intended. I think. I can never tell with old Jack; if he wants to simply portray his characters on a hyper-realistic level, or if he wants you to have a visceral response which drives you to your own conclusions, or both. But I do love that his style always leaves me guessing. There's such beauty in pared-down, spare writing styles. I saved this one for when I was in my happy place (processing a side of salmon) but it's not nearly as triggering as I remember. Not nearly as severe as Call of the Wild -- but to be fair when I first read that one I hadn't yet met the Dog of My Life. He broke my heart in all the best ways -- like he knew it needed to be broken before it could be reset in a much better way. More than anything, I miss his song. Thanks once again for such an amazing reading.
