We would love it if you would share your thoughts on mistakes you look back on when it comes to raising your kids. We sure know we did not do everything perfectly and no one does! Sometimes we think our kids turned out great IN SPITE of the stuff we did. Let us know if there are any topics you want us to talk about in future videos. Thanks for tuning in!

Being the mother of one of you It totally warms my heart to hear how you think about the families of today. Also that you weren’t worked so hard as children that it soured you and becoming parents. Well spoken.

WOW! Great walk and great talk. My siblings and I were raised pretty much the same way, only not on a farm. Although I always wished that I could've been raised on a farm 😊 my siblings and I were very blessed with wonderful parents and grandparents who never spoiled us but instilled important life and family values in us and I know that my daughters know and appreciate that. Blessings to you, Rich and Robi 💞

I agree with the “ backhanded apology” because I see now with my 27 year anniversary old that I did not prepare him well enough because I wanted him to not have all the stress I had, but now he is facing different stresses because I gave him everything. It was fine out of love but now I realize it wasn’t my enables him.

I wanted a better life for my kids so they had EVERYTHING. I believe we created a generation of complacent adults who still rely on their parents financially. However, the cost of living and the stress of todays fast-paced world is more stressful.

I completely understand your perspective. It’s a tricky balance between providing for our kids and teaching them independence. The pressures of today's world can be overwhelming!

I think I lost patience with assigning chores and having them do a terrible job. Was this intentional on their part to get out of work - yes. Was I being played - yes. Was I aware I was being played at the time - yes. However, I tell them now - "I took it easy on you, but the people you will live with (roommate, spouse) will not tolerate messes and lousy effort. Do not do what you do at home when you live on your own."

Im in a situation where my kids are older and my step kids are teenagers. I love this because it gives me a second chance to correct where I went off track the first time around and teach them more life lessons from a “non primary” parent perspective. I think they listen and take more onboard than my kids ever did. Nobody is perfect but we all can make it right.

I think I sheltered my daughters too much. Their dad and I were having problems but I did everything in my power so that they would not know or be hurt by it. Now after 42 years of marriage my adult children are having to deal with our separation and me trying to explain to them, when I had taught them to always take care of themselves, and then to try to answer their questions when they have asked me, why didn’t you take care of yourself? The answer was because they were my whole world, and I would have sacrificed anything for them to not have a broken family. Nice to see you back in Iowa.

I think you watched our other stuff so you know our stories are kinda similar. Take it from us, you can find happiness. That is what we were talking about however, in this video. We tried to shield our kids from reality a bit and maybe didn't prepare them for when the rough stuff comes knocking. You are definitely not alone there.

I think if you give your child a chore and they do a bad job, you have the do it and re-do it until it’s done correctly. I sent one of my sons up to take a shower (9yo) and he came down with dry hair. Told him he didn’t shower, he tried to argue but I said running the shower isn’t showering, your hair is dry. Then he comes down with wet hair, I smell it and say you didn’t use shampoo, you just rinsed your hair go wash it. Up he goes down he comes smell hair and that’s conditioner go use the bottle that says shampoo. That was the first and only time he did this. I also pointed out it took him 5 times longer to try and get out of doing something than to just do it right the first time. Same with pots and pans, do it right the first time or you’ll be washing ALL the pots and pans. Never found a dirty one. If you set reasonable standards and reasonable consequences and you follow up in a timely fashion, they will do it. It’s up to people who choose to become parents to understand that their job isn’t to give their kids the childhood they wished they had, but to teach their children to be responsible, to have manners, to help out their family by doing chores, and to be responsible, contributing members of society.
@beforeitstoolate20232 ай бұрын
It sounds like you’ve got a solid approach to teaching responsibility! Setting clear standards and following through is so important for kids to learn valuable life skills.
