I think it's admirable Mark was able to work at the same company for 41 years, congratulations. I will need to work longer because I endured several layoffs during my career. There is still hope...taking full advantage of the 'catch up' retirement contributions. It might be a good idea to test drive your anticipated retirement budget before committing to the transition?

Great to hear the rest of the story Robi! After watching Pt. 1 last night, I could not stop thinking about this. I know in CA they have to give a reason for firing you. If the employer doesn’t have a good reason, or doesn’t respond, they have to pay. Maybe he wanted to play mind games. Currently in a forced retirement situation, but I’m still looking. In my industry, I’m seeing wages going way down, and experience levels decreasing. In the financial world the old accountants and controllers are retiring, but the people to fill the positions aren’t out there. I’ve also had many near experiences where I think it’s a match, then it blows up. I’ve come to the conclusion I’ve been led here to KZbin. I’m trying to stay positive, which isn’t easy, and the finances are a bit sketchy, but so far solutions are presenting themselves. Hope to hear more Robi about your feelings on all this. Hope your Dad is bouncing back nicely. He is so lucky to have you there with him.❤😊

What reason did the company give to the Unemployment Agency for your firing? The reason I asked is because they have to provide a reason and evidence that supports their decision to let you go. You can also request their documented answer given to the unemployment office. If the reason is unlawful then there are legal steps to explore. I'm sure you know this. They had to give the unemployment agency a reason. I understand if you want to give the reason privately, but there surely is a reason given to the unemployment commission, if they initially tried to fight the employment claim.

Hey there! I’ve followed your getting monetized videos and have started getting more content out, but I’m still less then 10 subscribers after almost 2 months. I just don’t think the videos are getting out there! It’s frustrating as I’m on Social Security now after looking for a new job over a year. I did have a few offers and accepted as well, but the situations didn’t work out. So I was still planning on working until retirement age at least. Now I have CC debt again after thinking I’d be back at work again, so KZbin has to work out. At this rate, it will be years before I can get enough traction. There was one week where my video when out and had 28 views in 24 hours, but after that it was viewed once or twice a week. Still this was beyond frustrating. I thought at least I’d have comments, likes. Another person posted in the same topic and instantly had over 3K views and 1K subscribers!

@@beforeitstoolate2023 Thanks for responding! It’s strange how impatient I’ve become as I’ve gotten older! Lol! Last night after watching your wife’s video on being fired, I was thinking about my own job journey and realized how things have changed for me drastically after turning 50. I often felt I was being “pushed out” of jobs, and I could not figure out as my work was appreciated and certainly added to over the years. Often the attitude of “we just can’t afford you” was directed as me. Anyway, having a KZbin channel was something I had considered over the years, yet avoided. I struggle with the idea that God has led me here, yet I feel in a holding pattern, lol. I really appreciate your content and perspective. Hi, just found your podcast. I am 65 years of age and still working full-time. My director gave me the lowest review score at the end of 12 months of work. Not once were there any comments in the company system. So I have no idea what I did. No written warnings in 12 months. It felt like a gut punch because my manager and director both agreed I deserved a did not meet objectives from a year ago I exceed in some areas. Next week is my final chance to upload a rebuttal. I am still upset and waiting to get that final termination notice. So I immediately applied for social security benefits. I never got any email examples why I am getting the lowest end of year score of a one.

Attorney here. Fired from my job at 62 and had a difficult time finding another job. Just turned 66 and my job is shitty and they are trying to push me out now, but are afraid of age discrimination lawsuit. I’ve looked for a better place but no one will hire someone my age, especially now that there is a glut of young lawyers who obviously can be paid less. I had a serious health issue with my back last year which became surgery in November 2023. I used up all my meager sick time, and they didn’t pay me one red cent for the two months I was out after spinal surgery for recovery and rehab. Now they pay me hourly based upon my billing with no vacation time or suck time, telling me I’m a part timer based upon last years hours. Thank god I have Medicare which isn’t that great anyway. Funny thing is I look at least twenty years younger than I am. But once employers see I’m over 65… it’s over. No job offer.

I had something very similar to your experience. About a month after I was laid off, I was down visiting my parents on some random Monday. My mom took off with friends, leaving my dad and me to enjoy coffee on the back patio. He ended up having a heart attack right at that moment. Ninety minutes after calling 911, he had a new stent. The part of the heart that was impacted controlled his heart beating so more than likely he wouldn't have survived until my mom got home if I wasn't there. Thank you former employer for letting me go. It was a struggle to find new employment, it took 17 months but it has worked out. My new employer is far better than what I left.

It’s ageism, and salary level. They will hire younger, cheaper. I found that when a woman hits 50 yrs of age, the clock is ticking. I was in Banking & watched as 30 something’s were hired for positions they weren’t qualified for and the older staff would get a title change (no money) which included training/mentoring the new hires. Then their lacking performance reflected upon your ability to bring them “up to speed” . And eventually that would become part of your annual review. At some point, when your value to them& their department budget didn’t jive, your position was eliminated & you were out of a job.

I can honestly say we have not “worried” about retirement. We were very excited for this phase of our lives. My husband has a pension, plus social security income and health insurance from his former employer(that we will never change). I have social security income. We have savings and don’t have a mortgage. My husband retired at 58 and I retired at 63(should have retired sooner!). You will not be bored during retirement. We have a calendar where we each have to put jot down our activities. We do things together and most definitely separately. We volunteer together and separately for different organizations and our church. Your identity will be found in your volunteer work. We volunteer at sporting events(get to watch the games for free), usher for plays and musical events(watch the event for free) and volunteer for many other things where we get to attend the event for free! Volunteer opportunities are everywhere if you spend time looking. But don’t look too hard because you will make yourself too busy! We learned this! We spend the winter as snowbirds for now! We realize that we won’t always be able to travel as we do now and will stop spending as we do now. For now we are both blessed with good health. We know that may/will change but we will take what comes. Sorry, probably way more than you wanted to hear.

A few thoughts! 😊 1- have you heard about ghost job postings? Something to be aware of to avoid waste of time and effort. 2- unemployment insurance UI is a sticky subject for employers because they pay the FUTA tax and don’t want a bunch of claims to increase rates. Not saying it’s fair- that’s the business reason they tried to deny you. 3- most people never appeal these bogus decisions. Great job! Only 1% of patients appeal medical insurance denials. 😮

I was just denied a job that I am highly qualified for due to be in 49 years old. And yes, I can with certainty tell you that is why I was turned down because the two individuals who interviewed me were in their 20s. Anytime I’m interviewed with management that’s in our 20s or 30s. I am always denied the job. But when I am interviewed by someone closer to their 40s and older, I am offered the job. This has happened several times over the last three years and unfortunately it’s just going to continue to get worse. My faith in the Lord is what holds me during these struggles and I do believe that he has better plans for me than any of these employers could’ve offered.

This is sweeping through all hospital systems, not just for nurses. It’s a very scary time in life to be 49 years old and older ESPECIALLY if you have any type of health issues. I’ve been witnessing how these small hospitals, have been purchased/merged with large, corporate hospitals, and how they are “legally” firing/forcing early retirement (on nurses, records, respiratory therapist.) The hospitals that I have watched do this to their professional clinical staff (who, by the way are all over the age of 50, but still too young to retire and get benefits ) the hospital called this nurse into the office and said that as of January 1, 2024 they were doing away with her position and she could either go back to handling patients on the floor or she could retire. So basically what I’m saying is these hospitals are telling the older workers that they’re doing away with a certain position and give them the ultimatum to either go back to doing grunt work or to retire or just to be fired. When they give the ultimatum for those that legally allows the hospital to deny paying Unemployment claims.

I had so much accumulated PTO that I was able to take care of here for over half a year before she passed. Had I gotten the new job I would have been stuck traveling, training and also missing time trying to provide care while still on new hire probation. Be aware of the loophole Rule of 55 which allows one to take distributions from their 401k/403b without the 10% federal penalty plus whatever state penalty before you are 59 1/2 years old if you leave your employer the year you turn 55 or later but before 59 1/2. You have to check if your plan allows this, but many do. Some allow you to even put old 401k/403b's in and even IRA's as the IRA does not have this exception. Also, you can cobra benefits, if unable to get health insurance thru a spouse or Obamacare not desirable. But if you don't want to COBRA healthcare, you can still use Cobra for 18 months for your dental and vision insurance only.
