In this episode we read a story from "70 Years in Texas: Memories of the Pioneer Days, Indian Depredations and the Northwest Cattle Trail," by J.M. Franks, who lived in Gatesville, TX.
We also read other accounts of this story from “Vignettes of Coryell County,” By Claude and Mabel Bailey, and "Coryell County, Texas Families 1854-1985," published in 1986 by the Coryell County Genealogical Society.
This story is about Shelley's men, who were similar to Quantrill's gang - outlaws allied with the confederates in the civil war who often committed depredations on the citizenry. He the Shelley outlaws demand gold that Lem Murrell supposedly has hidden on his land.

I do love your channel so I bore what I first perceived as "antiConfederate propoganda". I'll always hear you out, brother. History is real whether we like it or not. Stay strong.

Unreal how history does repeat itself. People walking into stores taking whatever they wanted.

I don't think there was any gold. Just a rumor.

Makes them complicit partners in murder, for what their gossip and busybody ways cost the man, his wife, and their family. Vicious bullies AND cowards.

I wonder if people thought they were related to the land pirate John Murrell

I wish you had identified who the Shelley men were. I have heard of Quantrill, but not of Shelley.

One or more of the slaves is very likely the origin of the intel which made the robbers believe that there was gold to be had in the first place.

Great stories! One gripe: the word “reputed” is pronounced “re-PYOOT-ed,” not “Reh-pyuh-ted.” (You mispronounced it the same way in two separate tales.) ❤️🫡👍🏼
