Unwrapping my tree ferns (January 23, 2024)

Hi,
Welcome to this short video.
In the past two weeks we have had severe frost (-7°C) here several times and also several ice days. (24 hours of frost)
We currently have positive temperatures again until at least early February.
So I unpacked everything again and my tree ferns (Dicksonia antarctica) can now breathe again and enjoy any rain.😉
Unfortunately, the existing leaves have largely been lost, but that is not a disaster. In April they throw many new leaves again👍

Exciting indeed, and here too at least a month before the protections can be removed. However, this is different with these Tree Ferns. They like all the humidity, so they are best left unprotected. These tree ferns are only wrapped and possibly heated during frost. But if there is no frost, it is best to leave tree ferns completely unprotected, in the rain and humidity. They should never dry out completely. So all the protection is here for at least another month, only the tree ferns have now been unpacked😉

Bin jedes Mal wieder begeistert von Deinem Garten ! Ich habe mich noch nicht getraut hier bei uns im Rhein Main Gebiet Baumfarn auszupflanzen. Obwohl wir hier bei uns ähnliche Temperaturen im Winter haben. Viele Grüße aus Deutschland Torsten

Danke Torsten 😊 Natürlich müssen Sie diese Entscheidung selbst treffen. Aber Dicksonia antarctica verträgt einiges an Frost und ist gar nicht so schwer zu halten. Sie müssen sie ständig feucht halten. Auch im Winter. Deshalb sind unsere Winter ideal, um sie ungeschützt zu lassen. Sie müssen sie nur bei Frost schützen. Von -7°C bis -8°C muss man sie zusätzlich erhitzen. Der Schutz ist einfach, indem man sie einfach gut mit Wintertüchern und Luftpolsterfolie umwickelt. Der wichtigste Teil ist der Kopf.

Great video, thanks for sharing. I'm in the UK and am not brave enough to unwrap my tree ferns yet, I made them hessian coats. Interesting to see how you wrapped yours, with the fronds up. Most of the fronds have stayed green. Good idea! I might try that next year.

Thanks Maxine, glad you enjoyed it. If it is not freezing, it is best that your tree ferns are unprotected. The humid wet weather is ideal for tree ferns. They like moisture. They should never dry out completely, not even during the winter. If frost comes again, I will wrap them again, of course. I try to overwinter the existing leaves every year. If they can keep the existing leaves, it is always better for them. But unfortunately the leaves are very sensitive to frost. So it is very difficult to get them through the winter well. Actually, I should have heated them to keep the existing leaves in good condition. But I already have to heat too many other plants, so I have to make choices. The leaves still looked reasonable when unpacked. But 2 nights -7°C was too cold, the leaves have turned brown in the meantime, so they were lost...🤷‍♂️

Mróz był już blisko granicy, ale i tak ich tym razem nie rozgrzałem. Od -8°C używam przewodu grzejnego.

Hast du keine Angst vor Frost und Schnee ?

Die Wettervorhersage ist hier bis Anfang Februar positiv. Es wird also eine Zeit lang keinen Frost und/oder Schnee geben. Dann sollten die Baumfarne offen und freiliegen, denn die Luftfeuchtigkeit in unseren Wintern ist geradezu ideal für Baumfarne. Sollte der Frost wiederkehren, werden sie selbstverständlich wieder eingepackt.
