How to build my biggest palm winter protection (Timelapse)

Hi everyone,
Welcome to a new extended video. At the request of many, I have filmed the entire construction process of my winter protection for the large 'Phoenix canariënsis' for you this time. Now you can also see how I get the many leaves together... because I got that question very often.😊
Last winter the 8 year old winter protection for my Phoenix canariensis turned out to be too small... The 5 meters (16.4 feet) had become too low and so this year (2023) I had to increase the height quite a bit.
The new height is now 6.30 meters (20.7 feet)
With this new height I now hope to do at least the next 3 years and maybe even more...🤞
Many will think I'm crazy, especially when you know that I built this all by myself & only with a ladder...🫣 But luckily being crazy doesn't hurt 😉
This Phoenix canariensis (canary date palm) has been growing here in open ground for 15 years now. From a small palm to such a large palm now, this is very unique here in cold & wet Belgium... (zone 8b) That is why I have already developed a special bond with this beautiful palm. And that is also why I want to continue to protect it as best as possible for as long as I can.
As you can see, this Phoenix has a very full crown of leaves. I consciously do this with all my palms because that way palmtrees become the strongest, healthiest and also the thickest.
I also personally like them the most this way. So I will not easily prune a green leaf and try to avoid it.
But this enormous crown of leaves has become quite a challenge to get together for winter protection. With just manpower it has become impossible to do this.
So I came up with a new way to do that and I show you this now in this video😉

Daarvoor doe ik het allemaal 😊 Het is inderdaad wel wat werk, maar daarna kan je wel de winter met een gerust hart in...😉 De palmen blijven zo het mooist als je het dan goed aanpakt. En ja ik zat al een heel jaar na te denken hoe ik het kon aanpakken want vorig jaar had ik enorm gesukkeld om de bladeren met armkracht samen te krijgen... Wie niet sterk is moet slimmer zijn 😉 En ja het dak is altijd het lastigste al valt dat toch wel nog mee hoor zoals je kan zien. Ik doe het al vele jaren dus... tis een beetje lomp en groot en de kanteling bovenaan is steeds het gevaarlijkste punt. Yes Dimi, the larger the palm the more intensive the job becomes, I had a comparable height with the C.medullaris but less intense in terms of build, compliments for you 👍

Nice video. I have also a lot of Palms but no phoenix . I have a few big Trachys a small Jubaea, a small washingtonia and a few yuccas... I live in the Austrian Alps so its not easy to keep them alive. I cover them in fleece and keep them warm with thermostat and heatwire. Only the washy have a small house like yours.

That's an incredible work ! Giant canariensis! Amazing Dimi. One question, you don't need to protect chamaerops humilis in Belgium , right? They grow near the mountain in italy , they are very cold hardy . Merry Christmas

Thank you Daniel 👍😊 Indeed, Chamaerops humilis is very frost resistant. I have several that I almost never protect. A cover is only applied in case of severe/extreme frost. They do suffer when there is very damp frost, which often happens here. The leaves sometimes have damage from -7° to -8°... I have even had deaths at -9°, but also others who survive a dry -12°...🤷‍♂️ But Chamaerops indeed remains generally unprotected here. I have enough packing to do…😉🙈🥴

Una volta era davvero una sfida al limiti con l'impossibile, sia per le temperature, sia per reperire sul mercato, palme all'epoca praticamente sconosciute. Finalmente negli ultimi anni possiamo provare molte specie, che un tempo erano ancora più a rischio, ma non bisogna mai abbassare la guardia... Stai facendo davvero un ottimo lavoro di divulgazione! Das ist auf einer Leiter bereits sehr gefährlich. Ich hoffe, diesen Käfig noch mindestens 3 Jahre lang schützen zu können. Hoffentlich noch länger, aber wir müssen abwarten... Leider muss ich sie irgendwann beschneiden, wenn sie zu groß/hoch wird...🤷‍♂️ Aber ich hoffe, das so lange wie möglich zu vermeiden. Wir werden sehen, was die Zukunft bringt... Hey Dimi, I admire your dedication. Do you think using one of those big industrial fan heaters (to heat the air around the crown) could be a viable approach to keep a marginal palm alive over the long-term? I’m thinking about getting a Jubaea, but I don’t have the dedication, nor the space to store the materials required to tie the leaves together and build a construction around it… My plan would be to construct a minimal rain shelter, keep it dry for its first 5-6 winters, and then use large fan heaters during ice days or wet frost. Maybe you could also try something similar with your Phoenix once it gets too big to protect?🤔

Hi, First of all, thank you for your compliments.👍 You forget the most important thing...where do you live?😊 So I don't know how cold it gets there and what your climate is... But I think that is feasible for a healthy Jubaea. You are already doing the most important thing, namely keeping it dry. So be sure to keep the jubaea dry. And in case of severe frost, a fan heater will certainly help. Survival should normally be possible. There is no guarantee of no damage, if the weather becomes extreme, leaf damage will probably occur... It is never certain, damage depends on so many combined factors. But keeping it dry and a powerful fan heater will help a lot with a Jubaea. And the bigger/thicker the palm, the stronger it becomes. Of course the limit remains the same. By the way, on ice days (24 hours of frost) you should definitely provide maximum protection/heating for each palm. Long-lasting frosts are the worst, so make sure they see positive temperatures then. Good luck and if you have any questions, just ask 👍

I have a completely unprotexted Jubae Chilensis of 1m thick in Weert, Limburg, for 3 years now. When I bought it the leaves were 4 m long, but new leaves are much shorter around 2-2,5 m. I hope the leaves get longer as it gets older and more used to its environment. And a bit climate change might help too! I admire Dimi's shed around the palm, it gives me a good idea to get my leaves together also. Maybe next year....

​@@castuyn4618Hi Cas, it is normal that the new leaves are a bit shorter/smaller. This is because it receives more light and the real outer leaf is a bit more compact & stiffer. Hello! Congratulations on your palm, I also have a phoenix canariensis palm I want to plant in the spring of 8 years old, downtown in Hungary. Veil film and cover with geotextile without heating. Can it withstand -8 degrees at night and -2 degrees during the day?

Thank you 😊 Oh no...Phoenix canariensis certainly can't handle -8°. And certainly not a small one. The limit for this palm is around -5° to -6°. From -5° it will suffer significant leaf damage and perhaps even spear rot. So you should definitely heat this palm, preferably from -4°. And if it also freezes during the day, which are ice days (24 hours of frost), then you need maximum protection. So cover well and heat, so that the palm sees positive temperatures... Wow, you've done an incredible job there, Dimi! I really admire your dedication to protecting your palm trees! Your Phoenix is absolutely stunning now, so I can see why you go to so much effort to protect it. I have 4 Canary Island date palms in pots, I've brought them inside for a few nights as we have some cold temperatures at the moment. We've got -3°/-4°C tonight and perhaps down to -5°C on Wednesday. I might plant one of them in the ground as a bit of an experiment eventually as they are starting to get a bit too big to keep bringing indoors. At what temperature would you say they need protection? I'm in the UK (North West England), just north of Manchester, so it can get quite cold here, at least compared to places on the south coast.

Thank you very much Peter. Yes, this specimen has become very unique here in Belgium. That is why, out of respect for this specimen, I do my extra best to protect it as best and for as long as possible. We are currently getting about the same amount of frost here as you are. It might even snow a lot here on Wednesday... Phoenix canariensis needs protection from -4° to -5°C approximately. The limit is around -6°C. But it all depends on so many factors combined. I would protect small specimens that have only just been planted a little earlier. From -2° to -3°C something like that. During long-term frost (ice days) you must always provide maximum protection & heating. The most important thing is to keep the palm dry and free from severe frost. Good luck in advance 👍😊

I am very impressed! I've quite some palms here in my Garden in Cologne area, including one Phoenix Canariensis. I see the Video is from Belgium and wonder whether a palm of this size would not easily survive a winter wirhout this enormous protection?!

Hi David, Thanks. No, here in Belgium it certainly gets cold enough to kill this palm without protection. I know several specimens here in Belgium that have already died, even with thick trunks like mine. If I leave my Phoenix unprotected, it is guaranteed to suffer damage, at least burnt leaves, etc... Maybe it will survive 1 or 2 winters unprotected, but it won't turn out beautiful. The next winter then delivers the final blow... No, I also want to keep my palms nice and full of leaves, not just survive. And this one was planted as a small palm tree 15 years ago. This is very unique here in Belgium and that is why I want to take care of it as best as I can for as long as I can. One day it will indeed be too big, then I will have no choice...🤷‍♂️

I was thinking the same thing, fabulous job but thought it was probably big enough. We have couple very similar in size on our road here South Coast UK, they do OK but do get a little wind damage in winter.

@@robsx4280 Hi Rob, Yes indeed, I know they grow unprotected in several places there in the UK. Yet it is not comparable to here in Belgium. It often gets much colder here. If I could, I certainly would. But I also want to keep this beauty beautiful for as long as I can. I understand that this protection is of course not workable for everyone. Very interesting video Dimi! What is the coldest air temperature you get in a test cold winter over the last 15 or so years? What is the temperature inside this wonderfully built enclosure on the coldest days? In other words, how much extra heat over and above the outside air temperature does your shelter provide? I assume you do not heat the inside with light bulbs or electric heaters?

Glad you enjoyed it. The coldest here in my garden in the past 15 years was -18°C. I also had -15°C again after that, but I can't remember the exact years. I definitely heat the inside of the box, otherwise the palms won't survive. I heat with electric fan heaters. The difference in temperature inside the canopy and the outside air, without heating, is approximately 2°C to 2.5°C. So if it freezes -5°C outside, it freezes -3°C inside. When I heat in the box, I keep the temperature inside around freezing point, while it freezes much harder outside.

I think I could indeed work much faster with two jacks like that. The only disadvantage is that they are approximately 5 times as expensive as a bottle jack. Yes, that's it! That's crazy they're so expensive there! I grew up in a small Midwestern farming community in the U.S. and we always had one kicking around in the back of the old farm trucks or barn, so they used to be pretty easy to come by, but I haven't used one in about 20 years! You might be able to find some used in a secondhand farm store or something like that. Also, something to keep in mind with a farm jack compared to bottle jack is that they are about 5 times faster but also require more force to lift as a compromise. They can be a bit dangerous if you don't have a solid base, but you could probably build a larger footing on those cross beams and that should do the trick. Hi David, Thank you very much for these nice compliments 🙏😊 It is indeed not that simple and it does not happen as quickly as it seems. I'm also working on it for about two weeks, and by then everything has already been tailor-made and marked... The rope was an idea to make the leaves even more straight and together. So that I can go around with the tension straps to pull them together properly. Raising that ring even further would take too long and be too difficult. I'm glad you're thinking along, I'd also like to get ideas or tips from all of you. This way we help each other, which is also the main intention of this video. Hi What about ground freeze for roots? I live in Lithuania so I think our winters are similar. Same cold. Maybe 2-3 weeks longer winters. Currently I have palm inside but it is getting a bit bigger.

​@@Musvilkis I live in zone 8b. It is winter here from mid-November to mid-February. We often have -5°C here, -10°C occasionally, -15°C and lower have also happened, but it rarely happens... Our winters are also very wet & humid, that is the biggest disadvantage. But no matter how cold it is, an insulated box and heating is the best way to overwinter palms. If you heat it enough it will always turn out fine. 👍

Natürlich... Ein Heizkabel ist zu klein/kurz, um alles zu umwickeln. Und mit einem Heizkabel wird nur lokal geheizt, das reicht also nicht aus, um alles in einwandfreiem Zustand zu halten. Deshalb verwende ich bei starkem Frost einen Heizlüfter in der Box. Auf diese Weise halte ich die Temperatur in der Box um oder knapp über dem Gefrierpunkt.😊

Heel informatief Dimi! Ikzelf heb een Butia waar ik een hok rond bouw en verwarm deze met een warmtelamp. Wat ik mij afvraag bij zo'n grote palmen, is het belangrijker de kruin te verwarmen of de voet? Of allebei evenveel?

Leuk dat je er wat aan hebt 😊 En goeie vraag, het is vooral belangrijk om de enorme kruin goed te verwarmen bij deze Phoenix. De bladeren zijn natuurlijk het zwakste en zullen het snelste schade krijgen. De kruin zit bovenop de stam, dus de warmte van de kruin beschermd automatisch ook de stam/groeipunt. Door het hok en de warmte binnenin zal de grond/wortels rondom de stam ook nooit bevriezen 👍 Ik hang het vuurtje nu dus steeds ter hoogte van het groeipunt ongeveer (+2m), om meer de kruin te verwarmen...
