I dont know for sure if anyone is as aware of this as i am, but as a driver, i dont stop for a crossing if there's only one or a few cars behind me, or i am the last one before a bike or pedestrian can cross the street. Its more efficiant for everyone to keep going. If there's more space between cars, i slow down/stop wayayay before the crossing, so the bike/pedestrian knows even before i gét to the crossing, that i give them free way to go. If it rains, the wellbeing of pedestrian/bike is more important then i am. As a pedestrian/bike wanting to cross the street, i look away from a line of cars coming, pretend to be busy with something else etc, until i see the right opportunity to cross. Many drivers are so nót pedestrian crossing smart! As a bicyclist, it angers me when cars stop in a clumsy way, especially when it took them só long to communicate to me that they are going to stop, that i already dismounted. Look, if i dismounted, i dismounted. It had better be for a reason.

is it? I've never thought of doing that. If someone needs to let you go first they need to let you go first. Being allowed to go first shouldn't be a privilege that requires a thank you. What are you thanking them for? Sticking to the law? Not running into you? Doing what he should do? Not being a complete douchebag who feels like they're the king or queen of the road? Nah. No matter how stressful a day is, you stick to the rules, no exception.

Love the video! I got one unwritten rule that is very distinct between Dutch and Americans: when an American says 'hi' to someone, it is usually followed by "how are you doing?". What I've noticed is that that is more a part of saying "Hi", instead of a real question. As a Dutch person, when someone asks you how you are doing, you expect them to really listen. To a Dutch person, if you say "Hi how are you doing?", but don't give attention to the answer, that's extremely rude. I would say it's part of Dutch efficiency... If I say hi to you to get your attention (and being polite), I'm not following up with "how are you doing?", unless I actually want to know... Hope it makes sense :)

Very true. In the Netherlands a single "hi" or "hello" (= hallo) is almost the same as saying 'good morning" to another person. Mostly to a person you personally don't know (very well), or a college at work etc. Just to be polite in a friendly way.
@JubrieI
@JubrieI 18 күн бұрын
It actually didn´t use to be like this. I´m a dutch native, and when I was a child, it was also just a courtesy thing. But I thought it was really stupid to be expected to lie and just say you´re good if you weren´t. So I started responding truthfully and telling people that if they asked, they shouldn´t be surprised to get an actual answer. I think this was a common thing in the millennial generation that ended up changing it from a courtesy question to a genuine one. Because why would you ask if the only acceptable answer is ´good´? That's not what questions should be for.

I 'had to visit NYC' and yap at a server about my day to realize you're not supposed to actually answer that question.. 🤣🤣 Which relates to getting to the point: we assume you want to know cause if we don't want to know we won't ask. We don't do well with fluff.

The story was too funny, cause the guy using the toilet took that literally and at every stop he ran out to furniture stores and hardware stores and at the end he had renovated the whole toilet and was wondering, what design the next person would come up with. Hilarius story.

The respect for each other's time is so important. What do you prefer? You ask somebody out on a date and they start a long story about why they couldn't possibly? Or they say "Sorry, no, I am not interested". Rejection is never fun but I strongly prefer being clearly rejected, it allows me to get started on processing the emotion instead of first having to analyse what they actually meant. Does "Why do you ask now, when I have a boyfriend?" mean "I would but your timing is terrible" or does it mean "I'm afraid of rejecting you" or "I'm just not romantically interested in you"? I can imagine and understand all three, but I hate the uncertainty. I just want to know whether I should keep my feelings but keep my distance, or lose the feelings and self reflect on what I can do better, or whether I should just accept that this didn't work out and move on. Those are three very different lessons to learn!

I worked data-analysis in a metal-parts factory. There the rules are very strict for when breaks are allowed. If you want a warm/fresh sandwich at 12:00, you will have to order it at coffee in the morning. And as soon as the buzzer goes everybody drops everything and goes to lunch/back to work. The only time I ever saw people going for a smoke was during fire-alarm exercises or when they chose to have their lunch outside. This was in contrast with my job at the government where my colleagues took 15min breaks randomly going for smokes. At least 1 hour per day they spent on breaks having smokes. Very unfair.

The going with the flow thing is very true in traffic. If I come to a point where someone has right of way over me, I expect them to go. If I'm already slowing down and they keep moving, I can get back up to my pace very quickly again without ever stopping. If they, for whatever reason, start slowing down to let me go ahead, it just means we'll both end up stopped and staring at each other. It's nice that they're trying to be polite by letting me go first, but it's far more efficient if everyone just takes the right of way when they have it

To be honest, as a Dutch person myself who switches between 4 languages on the regular, I feel like it's also a bit time related. For instance if you waste 5-10 minutes figuring out what someone else is trying to say when they're trying to learn Dutch, you eliminate the amount of wasted time by just switching to a language you both understand really well and can get your point across in the shortest amount of time (while at the same time you evade a communication error which could lead to even more wasted time). Same with everything really, I feel like the Dutch dislike waiting and wasting time so much.

Don't get the impression that the average working men in the Netherlands can take free time from work as soon as the sun shines warm and bright outside. Because most can't. Certain jobs give the opportunity to take on some vacation hours on the spot, but on average a Dutch worker has only half an hour of lunchtime, and need to wait untill the full working day is over (mostly around 5 pm) But if being free from work, most Dutch people indeed tend to go out on a sunny day on mass a lot. And not just in the weekend, because a lot of Dutch people work parttime (specially females with kidds) or working a 4 days a week fulltime job (32-36 hours a week).

If you're going to do something unexpected instead of following the flow of traffic (be it on foot, on the bike or in a car), you need to get out of the flow first. Stand to the side. Get off the bike path. Park your car. You need to be predictable when you're in traffic. As for trains: let people exit first before getting in, and verbally assault people who don't abide by this rule. Even if there's a lull in the flow of people, don't. Counterflow makes getting everyone in take longer.

Also most companies dont allow you tp eat behind ypur desk. So you need to go. Most companies have a policy that explains workblocks of 4 hours (or 2 hours when you do manual labor. Then a company often has 15 min coffee break at 10 and at 3.) Also because of shifts, they want you to be back behind your desk and ready with your task and a handover before the new shift starts. I dont have colleague's i have to relay on and vice versa, so i also finish my task before i go to lunch 😊

I would say "getting to the point" is not an unwritten rule for us. But like you said, more our nature of being direct. It keeps things clear and simple. I would say the #1 unwritten rule we have is. Just do your thing, job or whatever you are doing. Without being extra about it for no reason.

I can attest to the "You're Dutch until you're not" thing...and how that's so not the case with the French. My first husband was an American expat. When we were out on the street and I would talk to someone it was obviously Dutch. But as soon as my husband would join the conversation they'd switch to English. My current fiancé is French and here in France I find very few people who will switch to English (it's been a few decades since I last spoke French so I'm learning it anew, but am not quite there yet). A lot of them can't even speak or understand English to begin with, so it's not always a matter of not wanting to switch. One of the reasons would be that the French don't do subtitles. They dub everything. In the Netherlands we only dub for children. Everything else is subtitled so we get exposed to foreign languages a lot more. On top of that, English, German and French were mandatory subjects in high school (at least back in my day; don't know if that's still the case) and even Spanish was an option as an elective. It's also part of our linguistic makeup. Very few people will go to the trouble of learning Dutch (even a little bit as a tourist) and it's not the easiest language to learn, so we just tend to switch. Now, the downside is that if you're a foreigner trying to learn Dutch, this is not helpful. You really have to ask people to keep speaking Dutch because they will just switch to your language for the sake of convenience, even if they know you're trying to learn Dutch. So I guess that is the "advantage" of the French refusing or being incapable of speaking English. So I get why we are considered to be hospitable people and the French generally are not.

@@ItzSKYVlogs Don't be afraid to tell people that :) People just want to be mindful not to exclude someone from the conversation. @@JubrieI Yeah, that's true. I forgot about that. I used to watch cartoons every Saturday and Sunday morning on Sky Channel and later Super Channel and it was all subtitled, because it was a British channel. So when we first starting getting English classes in group 7 (elementary school, average age of 10/11) I was way ahead of my classmates and every English teacher I had since then complimented me on my English skills. Not an enviable position for a kid to be in, but alas. Such is life. You've got to take the good with the bad. xD

@@thenecrosanct4906 Same! It's a shame that they dub things nowadays in my opinion, at least the shows for slightly older kids. It's such a stepping stone you don't really notice learning. Although I agree with you that you do also get socially punished when you're good at something. I think it's sadly more prevalent here because of the negative side to Dutch 'nuchterheid', which I hope will also shift with the times. Kids should be able to enjoy their talents, whatever they are, without fear of sticking out. When I went on vacation to England when I was 8, the new Star Wars (episode 1) had just premiered there, so we went and I could follow along pretty decently. Just being able to go to that movie while it wasn't out in the rest of Europe felt really cool. Luckily for us, childhood is only short compared to the long time we get to benefit our skills as adults ;)

I was a teacher and sometimes I didn’t have lunch, eating my sandwich on the playing court with my tea.

Go with the flow is a good thing but not for everyone. Have some patience as well. Some people for instance with ASS (autisme) need some more time to interpret (sudden/changed) situations. It is nice if there is some consideration. Nice video again Sky .

I hate the punctionality of lunch time of my fellow country men. Lunch time is when morning work is done and I'm hungry. Not earlier. Then - take your time until you're good for work again. I guess I picked that up in America...

In my line of work? No way could I just take off or get a day off because of a sunny day. That is higher up work/education. Most of us just sigh, deeply, looking longingly outside🥺....and get on with our work. Hoping the nice weather has not changed when we are finally off. Often working and lunching at our desk, no canteen, no time. Just an ordinary day at the office. You must have a great job and be friends with very fortunate people. I just had a one time experience with a collegue taking the afternoon off because of nice weather. Guess who was in charge of areanging days off? Exactly: she knew exactly when that was possible. Really smart...😂 But that happened once, so she was forgiven...😇

Please don't hate the organs in the streets Sky. I know it is loud, but it is also real authentic Dutch folklore and has been around for many decades. Have you ever looked into how they are built -often by hand - which is a fine piece of craftsmenship, and that they are usually very old? Can you maybe try and just cover your ears and smile about this Dutch tradition? 😀

I think a lot of Dutch people will know not to start a big new task when lunch break is around the corner, so when it rolls around they can drop what they're doing and go.

7:15 I know what you mean. And it's so silly, cause the next train will come along in 10 minutes. I've seen cars with German license-plates reverse on a double-roundabout because they got confused. It's a roundabout!

Yeah, great that you noticed. There are so many unwritten rules. Like one of mine is when you don't bike you may be one unhealthy whimp. Like I would not hire a person that would not usually bike to his work.
