You're more than likely to have a breakdown at some point. Not necessarily science-related, it could be your family, your ego, problems with fitting in, problems related to living in a foreign country, communication with your advisor, you name it. But something will most probably make it very hard. The world is always different, more weird and complex than we expect and it WILL be more difficult than you expect. But if you just like your science and you genuinely think that THIS STUFF IS JUST COOL - you will survive

As an educator and Life Coach on KZbin offering advise on scholarships for students the best advice i can share from experience is to focus on the reason why you wanted to pursue the degree in the first place. We underestimate how the why can be a strong factor in helping one pull through the rigor of the PhD.

Well here is my advise: First of all you have to study something you enjoy and are interested in, but if it is History, Culture, Philosophy or similar you should better be rich or live in a country without tuition fees and where the government covers at least a portion of your living costs. Because if it is not the case it might be difficult to pay off your debts and there are probably better ways to follow your passion then to study. Undergraduate study in my opinion is not really worth the risk of high loans, it is long and most of the things you will learn are pretty basic, so the "Cost/Academic-reward"-ratio is not that great. I think it would be a better way to find a basic job in your field of interest and to study as a distance student in you spare time, full or part time depending on how much time you can afford. Then when you have your degree you will have 3-5 years of job experience and it would be easy to switch to a better position. In the best case scenario you might even be able so save up enough to cover the fees for you postgraduate program as well as the costs of living, so that you could get your master studying full time on a regular university. This will gave you a sufficient insight in the academic work and some ideas for the PhD. After that go back to work in an even better position and write your PhD thesis in your spare time as well. This path might take you a bit longer then a normal study so you might be in your late 20's or early 30's when you are done, but you will have almost 10 years relevant work experience in different positions on the corporate ladder, no debts, probably you will be well connected a job you want and you will not starve as a student.

is it good to find part-time job or students should concentrate on research only?

There is no question about it that PhD is a stupid thing to do. First of all as a PhD student, your career totally depends on your advisor and he can be a moron. Think about it. You are going to spend 5/6/7/8... years and at anytime your advisor can say sorry to you. It is not about your smartness. It is about the decision of your advisor. My advisor used to appreciate my work for the first 4 years, then he started dragging my PhD upto 5 years and then he is saying that I haven't done enough work. Everytime I wanted to publish a paper, he told to add more and more and more material to it. So I did it. But still that moron is not satisfied. So, DO NOT DO IT.

my dad had the worst guide who used him like a servant and dropped his PhD. he only later picked it up when he was 48... it was horrible watching him lose his zeal. he was full of ideas and life...thankfully his third guide was a decent human and he completed it at 52. i want to do PhD but watching his situation scares me.

PhD is BS . Pure waste of time. Don't do it. If you have innovative ideas, be an entrepreneur and hire PhDs.
