I do like the how to cope with dropping the tray scenario... People with anxiety disorders forget that they are not the main character in other people's lives. Emphasizing that perspective can be powerful.

Really true. I've struggled with bdd/ocd/and anxiety for some time now. I just started going out uncovered and to my surprise not many ppl give a shit or even look at me.. Ppl only give a shit if you give a shit.

He is a good therapist. Very helpful. I especially liked the part about dropping the tray on purpose.

@leapsplashafrog I'm familiar with the research on attachment styles by the likes of Fonagy and Bowlby...but what are you seeing in this video that suggests this patient lacks secure attachment or has "birth traumas"?
@Dylvente12 жыл бұрын
Interesting comment. Would you suggest he not ask about whether she had control over her limbs, as one item in the "evidence against" column? How specifically does he lead or direct too much?

@leapsplashafrog True... for some cases. Very common mistake, which trying to invoke common sense, does not. Not all depressions/anxieties are rooted in childhood. That's something VERY hard to understand for some people. CBT is meant as a shock therapy to combat this symptoms, because you can't get to the root of the problem if you're suffering those symptoms.

Well!!! I am not sure if the rationalization of "dropping the tray " is the best way to approach this. Because although unlikely it is still very possible.. Shouldn't he be working more on "the meaning of dropping the tray" any ideas?

I came here to say this exact thing. Get to the core belief, and then the rules and scripts she has developed and put on herself around that.

@leapsplashafrog I'm thinking this person went to therapy for help with her anxiety disorder. Not because she wanted love. In CBT, the therapeutic relationship is a means to an end. It's necessary to the point where it allows the change-oriented work to continue. There's no indication in this video that the client is feeling invalidated or is becoming increasingly aroused. This video is an example of a specific CBT technique being used, presumably after rapport has been established.

The poor woman is probably now going to have sleepless nights over the fact that she may be asked to drop the tray on purpose! At least I would and I am actually fine with going to the canteen!

@lespaul Disagree with you, childhood is always key in mental health work. I've worked in mental health nhs and private sector for over 22 years...

I don’t imagine this applies to someone with hair loss who’s afraid of going out because of what people might think?

Cbt is but one psychological model, even it accepts the role of choldhood in recent 'schema focussed' work. Neuroscience supports the crucial role of womb to 3yrs because connections in the brain and sense of self are formed in the first 3yrs of life. It's proven now that good parenting is key to brain connection and setting of emotional thermostat. Read an Oliver James book for some good reviews of recentish evidence eg "they fuck you up". Cbt is kinda cheap really...
@MrJcarden12 жыл бұрын
not greatly collaborative in his style, he is a bit leading, and appers to conclude the evidence himself, which he really should not be doing.
@leapsplashafrog13 жыл бұрын
Not sure it's at all effective. This women may have deep seated childhood fears that have nothing to do with a cafeteria... Cbt is like looking for fish in the desert. Her problems will continue in other forms till she addresses her insecure attachment and birth traumas.

I feel like she has a lot deeper issues than tray dropping that she needs to deal with and this guys isn't going to help her with them. If you want to try to eliminate symptoms CBT is the way to go but if you want to live a more self confident life I seriously doubt this type of therapy will do the job...I think psychodynamic or some kind of eclectic approach would be much more effective. And this is coming from a second year psychology student at a liberal arts school so you might want to listen to me. I know everything about psychology there is.
@a.g.assenvan21799 жыл бұрын
+ayerballer If you allready know everything about psychology the next few years will be a drag for you since you'll be learning nothing new. I do agree with you that CBT is mostly focussed on symptoms and in this case the deeper processes at work are ignored. I agree with you that an eclectic approach might be most useful here (example CBT combined with elements of psychodynamics/control-mastery therapy and/or humanistic therapy). I don't like the purely psychodynamic approach since this has the opposite problem of CBT, namely it adresses history and deeper processes without giving tools to deal with practical matters and actual events.

+ayerballer haha sometimes sarcasm is hard to convey through written text (or maybe I am just bad at picking it up, maybe I need a 'sarcasm sign' ;) ) agree with your comment though :)
