I lived less than a block from the tracks on 12th street in 1952. Watched the steam engines on the tracks from out front yard! I still have a couple of pennies flattened by passing trains.

My favorite part of this awesome steam locomotive is the awesome bell and that wicked, loud whistle! Long ago, where I live, we used to have a steam locomotive called Nickel Plate Road 587!

A beautiful example of yesterdays engineering. Well preserved with loving care. A person taking the time to film the occasion with professional equipment for those of us unable to be there but can watch you tube.. Then the absolute ignorance of people, walking in front of the camera , standing in front with their toy cameras(smart phones) without even the semblance of a thought for others wanting a view too. Thanks to the photographer. To the Ignorant ones there is no hope for them.

The U P was always a class act. In the mid-1950s, whilst visiting my grandparents in Laddonia MO [served by GM&O's motor train from Bloomington Il to Kansas City MO], my dad would drive us to Mexico MO so that we could view the arrival of the UP's "City of St Louis" [carried by the Wabash Railroad between Kansas City and St Louis]. It was the most beautiful streamliner as I recall.

I was in Cheyenne in May of this year... saw 844 as they were refurbishing it..... massive.. and both tenders were there as well. Got to tour the repair shop and see the progress on it. Not all the wheel sets were back yet, the sub frames were massive. The boiler was being refined and had been checked for weak areas...

I noticed the pole lines but I don't think there were any wires on them. When railroads started taking them down, it just seemed the biggest part of the scenery was ruined. But I understand they were a lot of maintenance to keep up.

With a lot of help from the diesel engine (which I find sad to see included). You may have noticed too how UP 844's wheels were slipping as it arrived, and from that I imagine its load pull limit was either at maximum, or exceeded, therefore a helper was required.
@steveonthefarm86715 жыл бұрын
Diesel is there to provide head end power (electric, ac, etc.) to the passenger cars behind, nothing more, it's a common practice. The steam engine doesn't need any help and can pull a full freight. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIacpnitiKyjb68 Same steam engine, who's helping who?
@steveonthefarm86715 жыл бұрын
The diesel engine is the generator, it produces electric power that can drive electric motors on it's wheels and also provides electric power to the remainder of the train. The steam engine is doing the pulling here and is capable of pulling far more. I believe the steam engine has a small steam turbine generator on the roof somewhere that powers the radios, the only electric it needs.
@steveonthefarm86715 жыл бұрын
Can't say I can see it, but we don't know what's in the cars. 1- Steam engine, 2- fuel, used to be coal, now likely oil converted, 3- water, 4- diesel engine, after that there is one car with a stack, I believe that's maybe a café/kitchen prep car w/ stove vents. There is one car that appears to have integrated air or something in a rooftop bubble and one towards the end with closed sides and no vents that I believe is lavatories or storage or such. Either way, no worries and it's a good video eh?
@steveonthefarm86715 жыл бұрын
EMD's kick out traction electric power and AC for coaches known fact, common practice on steam excursions, I'm done with it.

what was the purpose of the 'plating' on either side of the boiler?

The main purpose of the plating on the side the boiler is to deflect smoke.
