Hi, thanks for taking the time to film and post videos of your layout. It's an inspiration. I understand it's n scale? Can I please ask - where do you get your trees from? Are they made by yourself or commercially produced? Once again, it's a great layout. Thanks and kind regards, Richard.

Another question… It’s amazing to watch and listen to the dance that is the back ‘n forth between road crews and yard crews. Obviously that’s your background so you provide a fascinating insight. The coordination between the mainline action and the yards is not something we often think about or understand. How would the Local in this video have gone about it’s work before the age of radios? They’d get to a yard and then what? Would the conductor go and see, or phone, the Yardmaster and just get the same information. I’m guessing so.
@oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125 Жыл бұрын
hey Greg - think this varied depending on the yard, but many people who worked in this era tell me that phones were quite often used

The burns local is another one that hits a bit too close to home. Work for a class one, on a foreign line, class one sends a train into the city, they get one back, complain we make too much overtime and can't do crap when we ask to get treated better by the foreign line's dispatch. Hell I had to take my local to a branch that was two miles away today. Wait for two south, hour and a half later I'm going. Trip woulda taken 10 minutes.

Love to see the up power and all the other although it would be kinda cool to see a BNSF train thats like a run across from one sub across and back to another sub like for example off the up line do something in silvies yard and continue but yeah it would be cool to see bnsf power it would be interesting to see the future with the past and bn has already happened on the line so its feasible to have bnsf and it doesn't have to be a full operation change just one or a few BNSF run through trains say the nearby scenic sub got hit by a snow storm and it was too muc for there snow plow so they rerouted the train over the Oregon joint line. Or you could also run great northern trains off the scenic sub as they didnt have as good of snow equipment.
@bnsffan6584 Жыл бұрын
I think bnsf would be cooler but you also wouldnt want to ruin it too much so GN for realistic operations and BNSF for fun and non realistic operation.
@oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125 Жыл бұрын
The Oregon Joint Line route would likely have been abandoned long before the BNSF merger.
@bnsffan6584 Жыл бұрын
It manged BN so in theory it could make it to BNSF. Is the line its based off of still active?

@oregonjointlinemodelrailro41252 жыл бұрын
You're probably right. It's hard to make a local exciting vs yard operations in this format, which is in part what took so long for me to get motivated to make this. Local crews aren't typically under the same kind of pressure as a yardmaster so it's tough to portray the same amount of conflict and tension as previous videos which made for better stories. Understanding that your feelings are likely shared by others will certainly weigh in on whether I ever spend the tremendous amount of time involved to make another one.

@@oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125 just do something cheerful and maybe throw in some banter between the Crews and dispatch/Yard. Makes for a lighthearted and fun Atmosphere and a nice chance to Those more serious videos

The characterisation felt like it fitted for the poor underappreciated and overworked UP Burns crew. Them being all happy and chipper just wouldn't fit. Even if today they got actual help at Westpine instead of having to build their own train

Love it, Dean. Question: in the opening scene, the Milw Rd car is obviously a spacer car because of the propane car and it’s hazmat restrictions. Is it now, or ever, a requirement for train crews to stop short of a car before then proceeding to advance and couple up to it? If this is the case, when is that a requirement? In particular I’m wondering if that would be required when switching hazmat loads. Thanks!
@intermodalman1232 жыл бұрын
Modern conductor here. Safety stops depend on the railroad, I've worked for some who require it and some who dont. The current railroad I'm at does not require them but crews will do them at their own discretion depending on the situation. Coupling in curves, longer drawhead cars, and the initial joint on an industry to look for cars that are still being unloaded are all common reasons trainmen will have their train stop short of the joint. Hazmat spacing depends greatly on era, to my understanding spacers are a fairly recent rule and likely just happened by coincidence in this situation. I could be wrong about that last part though. As far as switching hazmat despite some types of haz-mat having specific switching restrictions. Most crews will knock them around like any other car. I've got commodities I personally treat gingerly while handling but I'll also been a brakeman and have seen cuts of 5 of those cars get kicked at mach jesus by the conductor. Right now, to my knowledge the only type of hazmat that requires a spacer while performing switching operations are cars placarded for explosives. Otherwise you can switch pretty much anything next to anything else.
@gregalanharper2 жыл бұрын
@@intermodalman123 Thanks for the info. Your description of operations reminds me of the time I was on a tour of UP’s Roseville CA hump yard. We’re standing at the top of the hump watching the cars go over when a boxcar goes by with large words on it saying, “Do Not Hump”. I though to myself, I hope that’s not carrying explosives!

So I noticed Superintendent Thompson hasn't returned since the Monument Yard 2-parter. I'm guessing he got fired for almost melting down the yard? Also, why does Sylvies not use what remains of the NP Burns branch to do yard work? I feel like it'd be useful for keeping switching jobs off the main line.
