This review made me purchase it. It’s amazing and I kept it on eco mode 90% of the time. It went to 2/5 after blowing a 4 car drive way and half a standard block on both sides of a corner lot. Mine didn’t have an issue with regards to snow coming into the battery compartment or the chute issues. I just ordered the steel skids bc the plastic ones didn’t do the job. Another great recommendation! Keep it coming, thanks!

Nice! Almost makes me want to live up North to try it out! In Florida, all of my yard tools are EGO with the mower, chain saw, hedge trimmer, pole saw, you name it! Looking forward to the EGO zero turn mower! :D Oh, and that EGO generator 3000 watt backup is awesome (especially since I already have 15 EGO batteries)

I have the single stage Ego Snowblower, and she has been an awesome workhorse for a couple of years now. I get a little snow in the battery compartment, but the contacts are underneath the battery, near the top of the compartment, and the battery itself acts as a shelter from any snow that gets in there. So, really, never been a concern. Will probably grab this two stage blower next season.

I have the middle version. Similar to a snow thrower but has the augers. I used it last week. We had about 6 inches of snow in Buffalo. It was my first snow with the machine. LOVED IT. Did 3 driveways and about 100 yards of sidewalk. No gas mixing, etc🙂. Only complaint was the bottom piece was no match for uneven sidewalks.

Here overnight we got about 10 inches of snow. I used my snow blower and it was difficult but I know the machine wasn't meant to handle that much. It still did a nice job but took longer . I had to take 2 or 3 swipes at the snow. One thing I think I have issues with is the black plastic strip on the bottom. It sounds now like it broke and is vibrating non stop. Wasn't expecting that so early. Still love the machine.
@TechMadeEzy
@TechMadeEzy 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Christopher, thanks for watching! You used the 2 stage? I think you have the new single stage with the single steel auger right? The wheels are the issue with that one from my experience. The 2 stage did a great job especially with the grippy wheels, we had in some areas 12 plus inches.

Thanks AWD, honestly so far I’m very happy with the machine. Bottom line if you can afford having 2 sets of batteries that’s the perfect setup, use one set and have a back up set already charged and waiting. But that’s expensive. What do you think ?
@ariip
@ariip Жыл бұрын
Snow getting in the battery compartment is clearly to big a tolerance between the cover and base. I gather there is at least a click catch to hold it down so it is not vibrating up. Snow gets in the air and blows around like dust so it does not have to fall in downward, it can actually blow in sideways. To create a better seal on the battery cover door, plate saran wrap over the edge of the cover, and apply caulk to the lip where the door rests, After it dries, remove the saran wrap. Now you have formed and applied a new seal to the base where the cover meets it. (the saran wrap it there to prevent the caulk from sticking to the cover and sealing it closed) If there is an issue with battery cooling, ego should have placed a fan inside the battery compartment and drawing air from inside below and circulating it underneath or put metal cooling fins around the compartment.
@beezer5623
@beezer5623 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly I think the chute moving on its own is a bigger issue. I think you can probably get some kind of thin weather stripping and maybe line the battery compartment door or something?? But EGO needs to address this, it’s an expensive unit and that shouldn’t have been over looked during testing. How to fix the chute, I have no suggestions. Looks like a great machine for the most part though. Nice review 👍

Jeff thanks for the kind words and hints, if I got more snow I’d do more comparisons I promise. Also I don’t have the funds but hopefully down the road snow joe and others will send machines my way but for now I have to pay for these. Battery cost is also my main concern. I've read that some people have had their batteries die within 3 years. Battery cost at $350 x 2 = $700 is a huge hit. Would be nice if EGO had a program where you can buy replacement battery at a big discount, half off would make it more appealing and worth the cost for the whole thing.

Considering the cold and snowing condition you had to shoot in, plus first time use, you did GREAT! Now, I wonder if my not being able to get the one stage I wanted, could be a blessing in that maybe I'd be better off to go for the 2 stage? I think the weight of the snow going through the chute, may cause it to move. Also, distance is no concern for me cause it would blow into the neighbor's yard, at their car, street and sidewalk, to where I usually have it pointed straight opposed to up so high.👍💋

1. I had a lot of snow in my compartment too. About the same amount as you do. I am curious as to what they say. I also had the wandering chute issue. I only got about 45 minutes out of my batteries. But they have been in, and charging in.. and unheated garage. I guess I am going to move those to the basement. I agree with your assessments. Plenty of power. Throws far. Easy to use. One thing you didnt mention was quiet. When i was done with round one this week (and my 1st use, and like you got 12 inches).. and i brought the batteries in to recharge.. my wife asked "whats wrong? why havent you started?" I asked her why she said that... she said " i didnt hear it working"... shes used to my old gas one. So I thought that was a cool perk. I have a question about your skids.... Do you think you have them low enough? I noticed your not getting nearly as close to the ground as I am, but you could be doing that by design. If you hear from them, let me know, or get a video link. I emailed them as well, and have heard nothing. Also I picked up some new 5.0s on ebay for $150 each. Thats less than the price of 1 new 7.5. I figured between the 2 sets, it wil get my through most anything. Great video!

Chris thank you and yes I will post a short video update on what I hear back from EGO on the snow in the compartment. The skids I might have had too high, I’ll have to play with them more for the next round of snow. Thanks so much
@keithfillinger3182
@keithfillinger3182 3 жыл бұрын
Personally, I would keep the skids elevated a touch off the pavement. I put a piece of normal cardboard under the bottom scraper, and I adjust the skids to be on the ground. The reason I do that is to prevent the scraper from wearing out. I can shovel that tiny amount of snow to clear everything up. That is just my opinion.

I would love to see heated hand grips & power steering on the snow blower. Not sure if it would still be power steering since it is electric, so maybe electronic steering..? But, those are the only differences that I have notices from this snow blower & new fuel injected snow blowers or carburetor snow blowers. I would also love to see a feature where they were able to incorporate a switch where you could switch between white & amber lights. Also, I do think the sheer pin design could be looked at again. I am not too knowledgeable in snow blowers but, I am sure there is a more advanced method than sheer pins in 2021. @EGO POWER+ Can someone get by on just two 7.5 ah batteries or should they opt for the 10 ah battery?

I am using one of these blowers on a gravel driveway and it has plenty of traction. I even used it on some steep slopes and was impressed at the performance. No, it doesn't match a tracked blower, but I think the lighter weight also reduces hill-climbing issues of the wheeled gas counterparts. But on a level gravel driveway, the traction is just fine. The problem I have is loose gravel getting into the blower. I need more height than the skid shoes can provide. I will be looking at the Armorskids mentioned in this video to see if they will work better. For now, I build up a compacted snow base on the driveway to reduce gravel issues. So far I have only sheared one pin. BTW, I live in Fairbanks Alaska, so I get to play in the real cold :)

I purchased one a few months ago and couldn’t wait for the first snowfall to try it out. We got about 16 inches of snow last week and raced outside to fire it up. I was impressed with the power the machine has and when I moved it into turbo mode I could not believe how far it threw the snow. Unfortunately it was only on turbo mode about five minutes before the batteries overheated. I had to take the batteries out and wait about 30 minutes for the batteries to cool off and the another hour to charge the battery back up. I put the newly charged batteries in, kept the machine out of turbo and only got about 25 minutes of further snow blowing before the batteries needed to be charged again. My driveway is about 200 feet long so this machine can not clean it on the two batteries that come with the machine. I reluctantly bought two more batteries at a cost of over $400.00 . Nice machine but I am very disappointed in battery reliability and length. I was using the machine during the day and was not even using the lights. Overall I am pretty disappointed in this machine and would hold off on buying one until they improve battery performance.

@@TechMadeEzy I have the dual 7.5 batteries and got a similar 25 minute run time. But keep in mind we were blowing over 16" of snow on a 200+ foot driveway. That is many tons of snow. I was able to make it wide enough on one set to get the car out. I then pushed snow by hand, took a break and the batteries were ready to go on round two, discharge, charge, repeat. I have had problems with the batteries overheating as well as overloading the blower. So I am learning to not push it. reduce speed or volume of snow per time.

First time I could use mine. 5 inches of heavy snow. First impression, using Eco mode, WOW does it throw the snow! Second impression, The factory shoes seem to work fine. It's not banging on the uneven slabs like my other ones did. Problem with the chute. Besides the tendency to rotate to the right, I noticed snow blowing straight up from the bottom of the chute. It had come loose of the "nozzle" that it rotates on. It seems like it should be a green knob adjustment but mine is all the way down as it is. Not a huge problem but needs attention with the loose chute. It handled the snowplow load in the driveway approach very easily. Better than my 9HP Craftsman, which is surprising! I did the approach for a neighbor so ran out of battery just before finishing my usual area. It would have been enough and eco mode was plenty. Battery charged rather quickly, as I warmed up and had my coffee. I keep the charger in my warm basement. I did have the auger motor overload a few times while cleaning up some piled up snow. I increased the power and it handled it well. No problem. Wish I could upgrade to the 10Amp batteries the new riding mower uses! Final thoughts. I think that I can sell my Craftsman 9HP and my Toro single stage now. I think the Ego will be more than adequate.

As far as the chute moving (or walking) this happens on other machines. They clearly do not have a detent or click positioning (for the handle)on the chute as it moves. Many times they have a trigger to release the handle and allow it to move. My gas snowblower (snapper 1030) has a crank chute like many older machines and it does the same thing. It is possible to have the same problem on the deflector (top) when the snow hits it and pushes it up after you move it downward. The aftermarket deflector cable I got from a supplier which is much better than stock, has the feature of turning 90 degrees on the push/pull handle and friction locking preventing this from happening by not allowing the deflector to pull on the cable and not allowing the deflector to move up. .The solution for the chute rotation moving/walking is to find the right spot of having enough friction on its rotation (base or cable) so it will not walk but not too much friction so you can move it easily.

I love how power equipment is going over to battery electric. Small gas engines are a bit of a hassle...oil changes, keeping gas fresh, etc., though I've been using the later for over 40 years with no problems. My snowblower is a 1973 Ariens 10000 Series, 7hp/24" - one of the nearly original design Ariens. My dad bought it when I was 11. I have gone through it a few times, replacing parts and painting it. I gave it a new Briggs engine about 4 years ago. Treated this way it's going to outlast me (I'm 58 now.) What I wonder about the EGO is what I wonder about all contemporary snowblowers - namely all the plastic. I mean plastic skid shoes on the original? True, I won't have to repaint that stuff, but plastic does break. That and some weight on a snowblower is a plus when the drive wheels are trying to push the machine into the pile at the end of the driveway. I'm hoping that Briggs & Stratton or someone else comes out with some industry-standard batteries and motors, that Ariens and other makers get going on this as well as introducing even bigger machines with a bit more scoop height, bigger blower diameters (the EGO impeller is pretty small, 24" front width or not), maybe some heated handlebars like the current top-of-the-line Ariens. My current driveway in northern Maine is nearly 300' long and has a 3 car turn around. My 24" Ariens handles that. This EGO looks like it might struggle some given the smaller blower/impeller size. I'd definitely need a second set of batteries on the charger while I'm using the first set then swap them out, but that would be expensive. All in all the EGO looks good for most folks, though not quite enough for my situation. Hopefully somewhat larger machines are coming out soon.

My complaints with my old gasoline snow blower: Every season the same old question: What will be wrong with it THIS time. The gasoline from last year has to be dumped and new gas added to the tank. The spark plug is usually shot and has to be replaced. Once I get it running it mysteriously stops in the middle of a job and I have to drag the heavy machine back to my garage to work on it. You just never know what surprises a gasoline snow blower has in store for you at any time. With the EGO there's no anticipation of what MIGHT go wrong. It always works. My driveway is about 100 feet long with a turn around near the house. I don't think I've had to replace the batteries in doing that drive way or the front 60 foot sidewalk.(Note: I always use two , 7.5's) I usually do the neighbors side walks as well. I have extra batteries, though, for my EGO generator, leaf blowers and chain saw...so if I ever need to replace the snow blower batteries, in the middle of a job, I have them available. YES..the batteries are expensive. But if you use them all year round on other tools, their overall "REAL" cost goes down. I use my leaf blowers at least 300 days a year and my EGO power "generator" in my RV to supply QUIET 110 volt power (without needing my on board LOUD generator). That's the advantage of a battery operated snow blower when you can use those same batteries for other uses.

Who’s pro-Gas yet still here for an honest comparison between gas and electric? Being totally genuine here, it’s a very good product and worth the $$… it’s a bigger investment than gas, consider purchasing additional batteries to get the longest life out of the product, 5ah batteries are compatible as well. Best comparison for me is the Ariens Deluxe series… I’m in Canada and a Deluxe 24 is $1,600 and this one is a bit more plus you should also add the additional batteries. so $2,400 if you bought 2 extra batteries (whether you do that when you purchase it or a few years later). Don’t expect to get 5 years out of these batteries, follow the Operating Manual and you can get 3-4 years, after that you may want to replace the batteries or the unit. If you buy a gas snowblower and have issues you can repair it, with electric you can replace the batteries or the motor. In most cases I think people would just buy a new EGO or whatever, but gas engines can last a long time with limited maintenance and they are repairable. I think the biggest thing here though it the size of the auger and impeller, the power is fine but you need to factor in you are not going to move much more than 12” at once. If you have to move more than you can accommodate your speed for that, it will push the snow forward to prevent clogging. Like other products the trick with outdoor battery power is using them frequently, don’t try to power through stuff the same way you would with a gas engine, take your time and invest in the batteries… take care of them too

Hi Therese, other than 2 Batteries powering this unit, the motor is as strong as a gas snow blower, it's a beast. I've enjoyed it, it's lighter, easier to maneuver and fun

I have the single stage ego snow blower and had it about 3 years, I had issues with plastic parts breaking over and over same thing with my ego lawn mower it doesn't even self-propelled anymore , bad cell in one of my power packs which was replaced under warranty hope i never have to purchase one after warranty, as far as snow in the battery compartment my snow blower always had snow in there , i would say its OK but as far as longevity like my toro for 12 years not a chance

Looks like a great machine for small properties and light smowfall, however, I'm gonna stick with my Toro Powermax which has been excellent for the last 4 years. If and when that dies, I'm gonna get a bigger Toro Powermax. I also do my neighbor's driveways because I enjoy using it. Before they liked me, now they love me.

I don't have snow in my battery compartment. Did you use the blower on the blower before discovering the snow in the battery compartment? Also, I see you run on turbo. This will overheat your batteries (red flashing). I think turbo is only meant for short bursts.

Hi Corpse thanks for watching, No I didn't use the blower before checking and that happened to me twice. Also most of the time I ran below turbo with no major issues with my batteries

Thanks for the video , those skid plates look like a great upgrade , I've heard people complain about how fast the nylon /plastic green ones were wearing out , I still can't get one here in Montreal , they show nothing available , I had pre ordered it from Reno , but after close to 4 weeks , they called me to cancel the order , told me something about a problem 😭😭 , I am still interested in this blower. 🤞 , Thanks again for the great video and review.

Also, what is it like getting replacement parts for EGO power equipment? Things *do* break or wear out on all power equipment like the scraper bar, etc. Is the impeller directly driven off the motor? I assume no belt is needed. Is the wheel drive done by a different motor? I'd love to hear about how it's put together under the shrouds.

Ego is a pretty solid company, 5 year warranty on the blower, 3 on the battery, I believe you can get parts but I’ve never tried.

These really look nice, and I would love to switch to electric. Being that I have an electric trimmer and a lawn mower. I think there Is room for improvement with these . The price Is one thing, and second are the batteries. I am sure with most of us buying theses we would need a backup set of batteries to finish the job. And since there are only two styles of electric 2 stage which is this one and Snowjoe, Ariens made one years ago but seems they didn't continue with them. Hopefully In the near future more improvement will be made.

Howard thanks for watching 👍🏼 Honestly it works great does the job but yes expensive and yes definitely want 2 sets of batteries even for the average house.

I wouldn't worry about water or snow .. Notice the connectors are high and dry. It's distilled water so non conductive. I would rather it not let snow in but I wouldn't worry about it.

Agree Dennis, I spoke with EGO and the weather resistant rating and the holes at the bottom of the battery compartment make sense. Thanks

good stuff...one thing I had an issue with on my ONE stage snowthrower is charging the batteries....it was taking all night to charge them and I called EGO about it....they said it should take an hour MAX....i said they weren't going over 50% and are the batteries defective...they asked what was the temp where i was charging them...I told them, the machine was on the deck and the batteries would be charged in the unheated garage...they told me the batteries have to be charged INSIDE where it is warm and DO NOT store the machine outside with the batteries in it...that solved that issue BUT it is one thing to consider as most people will store these in the cold garage or even in the back yard in the cold...also,do you want a bunch of batteries charging on your kitchen counter like i did???.....great review and keep those batteries warm when not in use

Thanks appreciate it👍🏻also Agree, I take good care of my batteries. I've also decided to use a standard charger if I'm not in a rush I believe that will be better for the batteries long-term. I do have fast Chargers so I can always charge my batteries fast if I need to.

I wouldn't recommend it, do you at least have a shed? If it gets too cold the motor I'm sure will actually freeze up

Great video! I’m waiting on factory fix for drifting chute. The temporary fix is working remarkably well. I’m not having issues with snow in battery compartment, hope you find a fix. This is my second Ego snow blower, love them both. This one works great for all types of snow as well as snow from city plow 👍

Why do you keep throwing at the cars? You should move it in front and then once you clear the car, shift it past the cars.

Hi Richard, thanks for watching 👍🏻 I'm a big fan of steel as well but it definitely adds a ton of weight, it's a mix of steel and polycarbonate. I've used EGO products for over 2 years now so far no issues also they give a 5 year warranty on the snow blower so now bad.

Hi Anthony, thanks for watching 👍🏻 I found the strain to be very similar to my 24 inch Troy built which was good. I'm hoping to get more snow soon so I can really actually do a comparison that would be pretty cool if I can do this in the daytime to show people.
