I have to disagree slightly with your no maintenance statement my friend. For maximum life once a year (even on an Ego) add a small amount of lub spray to control lever pivot points and chute control gear. Antiseize wheel axle and spray or lightly grease or spray lub onto auger shaft and sheer pins,and auger bushings or bearings at the sides. This small amount of time will keep these snow blower parts from breaking and seizing up with rust. Having said this I super enjoy your videos and how well they are made. Thanks for sharing with us all.

I've had two winters with this snowblower......works extremely well. One thing I would add is to check the auger for frozen snow/ice if it's not kept in a heated garage. I make sure it spins freely before applying any battery power.

I bought my Ego 2 stage snowblower last year with only a single 5.0ah battery. It was able to clear a 10” snowfall from my suburban 2 car driveway and the sidewalk for my 100 ft. wide lot in the Denver area. I’ve subsequently purchased an additional battery and have been able to clear not only my drive and sidewalk but also had enough power to clear 7 of my neighbors sidewalks and 2 of their single car drives. I have also learned NOT to run both the auger and drive on the max. high speed as it caused the batteries to shut down due to the thermal protection kicking in. Since it was very cold out that day it only took around 5 minutes for them to cool down enough and come back online, allowing me to continue at a lower power setting without further power outage. I do not store the battery packs in my garage in either the cold of winter nor heat of summer, and while in storage I put a full charge on them once every 6 months as recommended. Overall I am very pleased with it and highly recommend it. I have neighbors with gas powered snowblowers the are sometimes difficult to start and so much heavier to manhandle than my electric eGo.

Love your channel and Brooklyn is a plus, just got into EGO at the beginning of summer, neighbor across the street had the lawnmower, and my old 20 year old gas mower was dying, so I figured I would give it a shot. Got the Xcut and I love it. So I went and got the two stage blower to replace my old snowjoe snow thrower. The snowjoe, like most snow throwers is good on fluffy snow, maybe up to 8 inches, but wet heavy snow forget it. Hey I am 66 and getting to old for that stuff. This is my first ever two stage snow blower, looking forward to that first snow. I also picked up the 100W power inverter, which works great for me as a power backup to run my CPAP machine, during black outs, and thunder storms.

THANKS! I love my Ego lawn mower and leaf blower that I've had for seven years. Then I bought their one stage snow blower that they claim clears eight inches of snow and i got burned. It's useless in 4 inches of snow. I ended up buying a gasoline snow blower and it works ok, but I hate maintaining it. So, I was tempted to get Ego's top of the line two stage blower, the EGO Power+ SNT2807, but just wasn't sure until I saw your video. It's 2 grand with (2) 12.0Ah Batteries and Dual Port Charger Included. I'm ordering it today. I live in NY and have a BIG piece of property that I have to mow in the warm months and snow blow in the winter. I'm sold thanks to your video! PS Amazon's reviews are totally useless with Amazon manipulating reviews.

@JohnVance I’ve had my two stage now coming on more than four years. The big trick is you have to have two sets of batteries and you really can’t push it hard. You’re just gotta go slow and steady.

I happened to luck out last year, walked into Lowes bought the last snow blower, which happened to be a single stage with no battery for $200.00. They even threw in a double sided charger. The year before bought the Z6 and just use the same battery on the snowblower. Winters coming and no more shoveling for this old man.

***Updated Comment*** I picked up this snowblower last season after much research and watching all the reviews (still loved your review btw). Sadly and unfortunately I was horribly underwhelmed. I had high hopes because I already have the mower, trimmer, blower, and worklight which are all amazing. Unfortunately the 2 stage snowblower was brutally slow, struggled with 1' deep, wetter snow, clogged at the rotors, and was extremely underpowered. I was completely disappointed after 2 uses and promptly returned the unit and purchased a new Ariens 32" EFI blower. I truly wish the Ego would have worked but sadly it couldn't compete with the gas blower at all.

I've used my single stage EGO snow blower for about six seasons now. Reached a point that the push up my large 8 degree driveway is to much. Picked up my new two stage EGO this past Saturday. Ready for a big load of white stuff. BTW, I'm slowly weaning myself of all gas/oil yard equipment. The last to go will be the riding mower.

I have a 20 year old Troy Bilt like yours. Engine still is perfect, starts right up. But the rest of the blower is rusted and falling apart. Been a struggle for the last 2 years. Just replaced it with the EGO with 2 10 amp batteries. Hope it works as well as your video shows. Thanks for the great info in the video!

Thanks for the update. As usual thorough and great information. Based upon your reviews and a lot of investigating, I bought the mower and trimmer this past summer...and absolutely love them! I see the work lights have now arrived in Canada however, I went to buy the 2 stage snow blower and there are none to be found and none in the warehouses for Lowes and Rona. I still have my gas snow blower but I'm really looking forward to getting my Ego. Thank you again for all the great information.

@@TechMadeEzy Great News!!! I was checking Rona and Lowes when I saw they had stock in a store in a town about an hour away. I called immediately to confirm they had the 2 stage with the 10Amp batteries and indeed they did. I was requesting they put my name on it and I'd drive up from my location when the store manager suggested I just purchase it from my local Rona and have them submit an in store transfer form. The short story...bought and paid for, arriving to my store location Monday or Tuesday. Thanks again for all the great information!👍

This year i might make the move and get my first electric 2-stage snowblower. At first i was looking at the ryobi but reviews weren't great about the ryobi. Then i looked at Ego. I like the green color on the Ego and their lawnmowers seem pretty solid. I don't have an electric lawnmower either , that will come later. Now the problem i have with Ego is that where i live.,if you want to buy an Ego you have to visit big hardware store, where they don't even have spart parts. Those big hardware stores only sell the machine and the battery. They don't have a service desk or any tech whatsoever. And worst the salesmen don't always know the technical stuff.. so if you need to service your ego, (which is rare but can happen nonetheless) you have to find a local service repair shop who does Ego. And there aren,t many in my area atleast, and those shop don,t carry all the parts either.. those shop usually repair alot of ariens and toro somthey have plenty of parts .. but for Ego they have to order the parts from a distributor.. and some parts can take weeks to be delivered. The second thing i didn't like with Ego, is that you pretty much have to either pay up front or use your credit card to buy an Ego. In my area there is no financing program. Unlike Ariens and Toro. which both offer 12, 24 or 36 months with no interest . Not everyone can pay $2000 upfront a snowblower. So i might go with the electric 2-stage Toro .. unfortunately, the 24 inch toro doesn,t have differential axle, and to get it you need to spend another $200 in parts.. and not every toro dealers have can help you with that. So to get differential axle, you have to buy the 26 inch toro version which come with two 7,5 battery. (Just like the Ego they are very expensive. The toro can use 3 batteries. And i believe they can be mixed (not sure) but if you have two 7.5 and one 4 you can just throw them in. The third battery will add another 5 or 10 min…also like i said the toro 26 inch has a differential axle, that mean alot easier to move around when it's turned off. Both wheels will be free and will lock together as soon you start the engine.. you didn't mention it.. but some electric blower also require maintenances. The electric toro use the same mechanical system as their gas counterparts . It has belts inside which mean sooner or later you will need to replace the belt. So unless you know how to open the snowblower and change and adjust the belt, you will have to find a way to bring it to the shop and even without battery they are still heavy. At the dealership I tried and i couldn't lift the electric toro by my self., it was just way too heavy.. less heavy than gas blower for sure. But still heavy. I would really like to buy an Ego because their batteries seems solid.. i don't know if toro battery are good.. but i know the ego ones are. But the lack of a financing program is what forced me to choose a Toro.

As I bask in the glow of my ego work light I would like to thank you for that recommendation as it has been in constant use since being purchased … one of the biggest reasons to switch to batteries is that the tool starts every time .. Plus Carbon Monoxide exposure.. which can be a hidden threat… those 7.5 ah batteries last a long time in a work light and can really be handy in a blackout.. Happy Hollidays…!

I had a gas on in the mid 2000s and my biggest issue was it was hard to start and I hated having to mix the gas and oil. Last winter we had a hard winter so I finally decided to buy a a battery one. So far I like it mainly because it is easy to start up. I bought the one stage model.

Thank you for this video. It is very informative. I like on how you suggested when using it to stop once in a while to give the auger a chance to expel all the snow and then continue moving forward. I will be in the market this fall for an ego 2 stage snow blower. I heard there might be a 28 inch wide model available as well .Looking forward to seeing that. You must know this already but I heard it is better to place batteries on a piece of wood instead of a cement floor to avoid damage or premature drainage. Not sure if this rule applies to ego batteries. Thank you from Montreal, Quebec.

Had a Craftsman gas snowblower for 8 years that rusted through and dropped the drive chain, followed it with a second Craftsman that lasted 5 years before the engine blew, then picked up an expensive large Ariens which had carb issues in the first year, then after I replaced the carb components, it still acted up, backfired, and then the drive gearing stopped working on one wheel. I can no longer get the parts I need as Ariens obsoleted the model. I'm not the handiest, but I did take care of the snowblowers and found that for all their "heavy duty" rep, they were finicky, noisy pains that I ended up having to replace every 5-6 years. I bought the EGO 2 stage snowblower last year and so far am very happy with it. It has a 5 year warranty, , handles the Wisconsin snow just fine, and is so much easier to use than any of the heavy gas snowblowers I owned. There are pros and cons to every choice, but I have to say I'm happy with the EGO and its been the right choice so far.

The Ego batteries are only warranted for three years and the cost for them is almost the price for a gas unit. Since the battery warranty is 3yrs and the unit 5yrs. It's safe to assume that Ego knows they'll last at least 3 and not possibly make it 5.

I hate to say it but with ethanol fuel, gas small engine maintenance is expensive now. Ethanol eats everything. Constantly replacing fuel lines, rebuilding or replacing carburetors. I'm not even risking fuel injected blowers. They cost more than the ego does. Great video! I think I'll take the plunge into ego and see how It goes.

What are you even talking about about? Constantly replacing fuel lines, rebuilding carburetors? I have had Honda lawnmowers and Ariens Snowblowers for YEARS…. With very low maintenance. The Ego 7.5 A.h batteries are $352 on Amazon….. the 10 Ah battery is $499…. The EGO is super expensive right off the bat and then 8 years later…. (If that) you will need to buy new batteries. And note that when you own a battery operated snowblower…. You can only do your own property. You won’t have enough power to help your neighbors…. Like I do on every snow storm. And for that super expensive machine you get a bunch of plastic levers… that I want to see how they hold up after 10-15 years. It seems that 90% of these review’s I see on these products are from huge fans of battery operated tools that just can’t wait to hit the “THEY’RE THE BEST” button approval button. I will say…. It will be curious to see how after 15 years what the cost for is after replacing batteries. And I do hope it works out for you. Oh…. I do have a Kobalt battery lawnmower that I got off of Craigslist…. I like it but the battery is going bad and it’s $180… ugh.

The other advantage of the electric is that it is much more quiet than the gas operated blower so I am not waking up my neighbors when I am out clearing my driveway at 6am (I have the greenworks 80v 2 stage).

Excellent overview. I appreciate that you objectively discuss pros and cons of both. I have a 14-year old Snapper and was thinking of proactively getting an EGO. But I don't think I will. For me, a gas engine is easy to maintain. Change the oil every fall. Stabilize the gas and run it out in the spring. Change the plug every few years. I had to replace a muffler when it rotted out. I had to pull the carb once and spray it out with cleaner. Maybe a total of 20 hours over 14 years. As you say, gas and oil are cheap. The amount used in my snowblower is tiny compared to my fuel-efficient cars. The other maintenance issues that have cost me more in time and money you didn't really discuss and I assume are the same for electric. Augur gear box lube, and maybe replace after years of hitting rocks (I had to). Lubing the augur axle. Tightening and maybe replacing the drive belts, and maybe even the drive plates. Drive and augur control cables snapping. Replacing skid plates and scraper bars so that the body of the inlet doesn't start to get ground away (Is the inlet body plastic on EGO?). I don't know the long-term quality of these parts in the EGO as it hasn't been out long enough. I am probably an exception. I have a four-hour process after a 6-inch snowfall to clear my driveway and walks. Even one hour of battery juice won't do it and I can't afford a second pair of batteries.

Why do you keep stopping every couple of seconds to let it empty itself? Is that normal? I have an Ariens and I just keep pushing through up to 14+ inches of snow and it keeps throwing it? I want so badly to like this unit but with the snow accumulation and the way the plows from the city push the ice and slush in front of my driveway, I don’t think this machine will cut it.

Just an FYI. You don't have to have 2 7.5 batteries to run this snow blower. I already had 1 7.5 and 1 5.0 amp batteries. I bought the EGO 2 stage snowblower without batteries. Then place both batteries in snow blower. Works just fine for my driveway and walk way.

So the solution to the EGO run time issue is to slow down or to spend an additional $800 in batteries??? ..Sounds very limiting to me, similar to “ range anxiety experienced with electric autos. I just cleared 2.5 feet of snow on a 40 foot driveway and then did two other big neighbours driveways in lees than 2.5 hours with my Yamaha gas snowblower. Would have been out there all day with the “EGO slow speed trick” and battery recharges. NOT FOR ME !! …..if you catch my drift !! Haha

I’m considering the EGO now - if you lose power in a big storm - how are you charging the batteries? Gas might be advantageous if in area where power goes down. I’m tempted to just get another Ariens.

You can use a gas generator that has a pure sign wave outlet, you can use solar, but that’s slow. Or you can use a battery power station also

The only issue i would have is with the amount of plastic. Plastic and -20 f don't go together. I have an old Murray and the only thing patched together is the plastic chute.

Must be mentioned that a gas blower’s continued cost is not only the posted price of gas/oil, but the time/cost it takes do and manage all these things…. driving to get some gas, if the gas is old, dangers of storing gas, seasonal maintenance, the cost and time doing all these ‘little’ things. Running to the store to get parts, trouble shooting… usually increases after 3-5 years of use. And few really maintain their machines to top spec. Like the guy thinking driving 20 miles to save 4 bucks…. Not recognizing the time and cost of the means needed to “save” that money. The electric also appear to have some “behavioral safety” advantages like easy off and on to troubleshoot or clear the chute. And quality of life upgrades. Much Lower noise. Not smelling like exhaust. I have found others in the household are more at ease and willing to help out and use the electric blower. Unless you are going to argue “what-if” scenarios, given normal expected life situations the electric wins. I feel most people after struggling with a gas blower would gladly spend a what might turn out to be a smaller difference in cost when faced with gas issues. Thanks, great video.

I'm seeing other people's videos using this machine and they just continue to go down the driveway without stopping and there was at least 12 inches or more of snow so I'm wondering why you go only 5 ft and then give it a rest when it doesn't need one. My first battery powered snow blower I had to do that with because when it built up enough pressure it would automatically cut off and I wouldn't have to restart the machine but that doesn't happen with ego the circuit doesn't shut off even under heavy pressure from the snow

I just received mine. Question: is it normal to hear a screeching sound when you let go of the handle and the blades stop rotation? The sound is similar to a miter saw when it's blade stops. Don't get snow in East NC-do get LOTS of pine straw and pinecones-too bad the snowblowers can't blow these!!!At most get a snow dusting or sleet.Recently for the pine straw and pinecones had the yard care service grind them in in their large Scag gas ZTR mower with a 25 hp gas motor.Crushed them up just fine.Figure these would have been too much for my Ego walk mowers and Z6 ZTR ride mower.

I tested the ebay knock off 10ah batteries with 10y warranty on my select cut lawn mower, new iq weed wacker, 765 blower and driveway tested (no snow) the new 2 stage (no batts) i just got a couple weeks ago. saved a bunch on $ on batteries, sold all my ego batts. Now I have 4-10ah's. I also sold my fast chargers and got the regular ones. fast chargers are good but IMHO it will depreciate the battery quicker over time. I dont think the knock off batts self discharge like the oem, i don't think that's a good thing ego does that.

Now just for fun let's compare it to a Honda HSS928, the Honda has way more power, better built quality, ridiculously low fuel consumption, it just doesn't break, always start on first pull, superb traction ( if you know about blowing snow, you know how traction is important), phenomenal resale value after 10 or 20 years so yes it's way cheaper in the long run. Don't even mention Troy built or other gas powered snowblowers, none comes even close to a Honda in every ways. I love my RAV4 PRIME XSE PP (PHEV) and my RYOBI electric zero turn laws mower but in the winter nothing beats a gas powered Honda snowblower. Over 40 years of blowing snow experience talking 😊

the 5hp i have now and snow i get usally 2-4 gallons of gas can last me all winter. So even if i had to buy a new snow blower i would probably get something like i have now cause 600$ is gonna take a long time to recoup. Throw on top of how much those battery's cost for ego which means probably never save $ recoup the costs. As for oil it takes only like half quart to change it maybe little more. Even if the ego battery lasts 10 years, at 360$ a pop that is 70$ a year vs like 15-20$ in gas. going electric for say snowblower only doesn't remotely look cost effective unless you go all in on rest of things like a mower and other stuff.

I think my Ridgid 18V Lion batteries are 8 years old and still amazed they still work great. We get 1000's of cycles with our phones we use every day. We don't other devices like we use our phones. My 7 year Toro mower hasn't held up that well, I don't think they make things like they used to.

I store my batteries between 50-80% charge and try to avoid prolonged periods at 100% or near 0%. I have large batteries for my electric bike (R&M), electric car (Tesla), electric leaf blower (Stiga) and electric motorcycle (Electric Motion Escape) and they are all still going strong after years of use. I haven't seen any need to replace batteries in any of the aforementioned items. If you use the batteries sensibly, they last for a long time. Critique about battery longevity seems to come mainly from people who don't use them or don't know how (or don't care) to use them properly.

We got buried with 24” of heavy wet snow. I got the 2 stage Ego and it handle awesome. Being in turn I don’t need to shoot the snow far giving more time time. My gas snow blower would produce a lot of heat and there would be ice build up. The ego has no ice or build up. The ego was able to get through the end of the driveway where the city plow can through. I register each battery and snowblower and charger. Snowblower has a 5 year and batteries a 3 year.

I had to Warranty out 2 of my 3 EGO batteries after 2 years of use. Meanwhile my old Li-Ion Ryobi 18v are going strong 6 years later. EGO tools themselves are awesome tools, batteries are hit or miss. I can't wait for graphite battery technology to become mainstream because it will outperform gas

I tried the ego at Lowe's and found out it seems quite cheaply made for a snowblower. I have an old Columbia 10/28 from 1985 and its much more sturdy. The controls seem flimsy on the EGO. Seems like it won't last very long. I'm in Quebec Canada we get a lot of snow

The quality of ANYTHING pre 1990 will be far superior to stuff built today. Lol .... I have a 1972 tracked Honda which feels like a TANK. Everything on it except the grips on the handles is made out of steel. The only thing I've replaced on it is the sparkplug and battery for the electric start! Got it from my grandfather who got it from his neighbor.

I almost went with a battery snowblower for this winter but I saw a review on the Home Depot website for the Ryobi model and the guy said that he doesn’t have a heated garage and his snowblower is in the shed outback and the temperature gets pretty cold in Canada and he said his snowblower wouldn’t start if it was too cold and he kept the battery inside the house, warm and toasty but the electronics on the snowblower wouldn’t let it start until the snowblower was warmed up so that’s why I went with gas instead of electric🤷‍♂️😞

Interesting. I keep mines in my unheated garage but my batteries are always in house. I know Canada gets cold, but I'm curious on how a battery powered snow blower would not tun on in the cold and a gas one would. The battery is the item that is mostly affected by the temp, and if that is warm from the house, what on the snow blower wouldn't move? What exactly is warming up an electric snow blower?

I don't like how you only went a foot or so and had to stop and let the ego catch up to the amount of snow that was in the auger and chute. I think I'd run the drive in a slower speed so I wouldn't have to stop. I'd rather walk slower than have to stop and start. Auger speed I'd put just below turbo. I like the noise it makes....sounds like a turbine engine! Haha! At Lowe's, up here in Canada JUST A SINGLE 10.0 AH battery is $629.99 + taxes. The Two Stage 2x10.0 AH battery + two rapid charger kit is $2199 so buying the kit is way more cost effective than just the blower. Myself I'd go with the 2x7.5 AH kit with the dual charger. I already have mower, leaf blower, carbon shaft auto feed trimmer, hedge trimmer and power station with three 5.0, two 7.5 and 2.5 batteries. Plenty of power!!! They've updated the mower so much I last couple years I'm wondering if they'll put out an "XP" two stage.

WOW! $2200. That VAT is a mother'. I got 4x10ahs and two rapid chargers for $2000. shipping and handling was about $400 more as I got it from ACME tools but still a great deal as I won't need to buy anymore batteries and can buy everything bare tool and save money. 600 and change...Man. They're $450 at ACMEtools with free shipping(not handling fee for the batteries). They even have the 12ah packs as a pair for $900.

Okay so I'll say this. There's a few bad arguments in this. Electricity prices also fluctuate. The motors don't need maintenance, but axles need grease. Long term cost of battery powered equipment is notably higher. Also what happens when a wire corrodes and the unit stops working, or some cells die in the battery, after warranty? Take it to a shop? No, no shop will work on this because it's not mechanical. You're left with an authorized service center that'll charge through the nose, or you're looking to patch wires on your own, and you need to know how to work with electronics, which is much more knowledge intensive than mechanical maintenance. That's not even getting into lithium ion battery repair, which is outright dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. One oopsie and your funeral will be closed casket. With all this said, I have battery powered ope for all my stuff (except the snow blower I'm working on it), so clearly I'm okay with all the downsides. The cost in time to me is worth it

“Permanently” means less than 10 years and you will be buying a new machine and will have spent even more $$$ for extra batteries. My gas blower is over 20 years old and going strong. Long term operating costs for battery will be way more than gas. Everything is nice when it s new but when that ev starts breaking good luck.

What happens when Ego stops making these batteries...and changes the battery format for a new design of snow blower... I have 3 power drills that I cannot find batteries for. They are basically paper weights now. Ego has the control to plan obsolescence to any of these devices by simply stop making batteries to fit old devices. I have a gas blower that's 20 years old...and I see no need to replace it.

The fact that you are stopping all the time to empty the snow means you are going too fast. Electrical motors are at their best with no speed variations. Stop and go waste a lot of electricity and overheat the motors.
