Hi Julia! I've been watching you for years. Your free motion stitching is the best. Your artistic creations are inspiring. Traci popped up on my feed about 1 1/2 years ago, and I love her uninhibited approach to upcycling. It was so nice of you to mention her and her channel. The two of you are my favorite you tube channels. Besides being a great artist, you are thoughtful to others!

Hi Julia, having used acrylic before there was any "medium" to add, I have found that if you let it dry then iron over it using a cloth or press sheet, it will be permanent and no problem.

Thanks for sharing Julia! These jeans turned out lovely and cute and I adore the stencil bits, they are the ”icing of the cake”! I watch Traci’s channel too but have watched your channel for years and love your neat and very artistic work! You don’t have to use larger jeans to do this, it’s actually a perfect way to enlarge a pair that is too small, just add a strip wide enough along the whole seam as you’re sewing them back together again. I learned the hammer method from Traci and I think it works wonders on ALL bulky seams. It was a game changer for me as I sew a lot of bags. I use a larger, heavier hammer than you and really wack it good. I do it on my cuttingtable on top of the mat.
@stitchesbyjulia5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tip on adding the fabric on the sides. That would help with the bulky seams too. Up cycling jeans are so much fun!

Great video...my wife will love this, she does not sew, so I can take care of that. And I can say that craft paint is perm on most fabric since most of my cloths have paint on them and it does not come out.

Wonderful upcycle, Julia! I’m a fan of Traci too. I’m thinking of trying cutting from the bottom up to near the waistband and stopping, so I don’t have to sew the thick parts together. Do you think this would work? Thank you so much! Bonnie
@jozazoo5 ай бұрын
I think it is great to stop before the waistband as long as the jeans fits you well, if not it is good to have the opportunity to adjust the size by cutting through the waistband My opinion 😊

As a person that sews lots of things, if I were to cut it apart, I would not cut through the jeans above the pockets to the waistband. I think if you use jeans that are only one size bigger or your actual size you could still do the side seam the way that you did for the distressing. I like your thoughts on how you do it the best. You don’t overdo it.

They turned out just gorgeous! Love them. Would have liked to see them on at the end - you cropped the length, was that because they were too long for you? Or are they meant to be cropped (e.g. gaucho pants)?
@stitchesbyjulia5 ай бұрын
Hi, I usually make my jeans cropped. The bottoms are used in other projects. I sell most of the my thrifted jeans at my summer flea market shop. I have found that capris and cropped pants sell better in the summer.

You probably know this but in case not--increasing the presser foot pressure as well as a thicker needle can help with thick seams
@stitchesbyjulia5 ай бұрын
I will definitely follow your advice on the lowering the pressure on my foot. I have never done that. Thank you! I do use a heavy needle- a must when you are sewing over denim seams. Thank you so much for the tips! Julia
@Diana-ko5bo5 ай бұрын
Julia I don’t understand why you cut out a hole and sew from the back. Just fuse the patch and save a step. Comes out the same
@evasaker24765 ай бұрын
Well it doesn’t come out the same actually. When you patch a hole from the back with a straight seam and then wash and tumbledry you get a cute fraying of the denim around the hole on the front.
@lidabard21215 ай бұрын
I think keeping consistent stitching on all patches is more cohesive. If you were to purchase boutique jeans like these patches are not fused on. Just another point of view. We all love Julia's techniques.
@stitchesbyjulia5 ай бұрын
Adding the patch behind a hole gives another texture. When washed, the denim fabric will fray, giving it this fun look. It's all a matter of preference. Thanks for watching, Julia
