very interesting opinion. I do agree with everything you said about the original Godzilla movie. but what makes it the #1 Godzilla movie, for me, is how it beautifully mixes a complex plot with themes and monster movie tropes as the plot features a love triangle, post war recovery, sense of pathos, political talks, the responsibility of a scientific community and the horrors of nuclear weapons told from a giant monster movie. this movie is truly a work of art and easily the best monster/Godzilla movie ever made. give it a 9.4/10

I would love for someone to do a hybrid cut of Gojira and the American version, preserving the integrity of the original cut while also including Steve Martin as a character. Rarely do films succeed at creating an atmosphere, setting a tone like Godzilla does. The hospital scene in the beginning is heart wrenching despite not yet knowing any of the characters.

happy 70th birthday godzilla!!! :3 love this film as a must watch for the big g showing him at his roots as a tragic monster taking his/natures rage against humanity in a really somber dark way that deserves his destruction leaving the ending on a bittersweet yet heartfelt(especially the human characters being simple yet care for them having enough personality even when the kaiju aren't on screen that the u.s ones still have issues fixing.) unknown ambiguity of what the king of monsters would be like when he returned.(showing him going from just as/even more dangerous, evil, animalistic, just does what he feels like, silly, sympathetic, caring & even crying at his death/cheering when his legacy show's him a hero putting aside his grudge helping humanity.) still remember the nickname my english teacher gave this version(giant radioactive apple fritter with frosting breath) when i first watched it in english class & my stepdad's nickname for later versions(easily angered grumpy radioactive old man that does what he feels like.).

The first version I had seen of this movie was the one with Reymond Burr aka the Americanized version. Years later, when I became quick enough at reading subtitles, I saw the original Japanese version. Oh man, what a difference. The Japanese version felt post apocalyptic, and helpless, and everything post war Japan was feeling at the time. I felt like I was right in the middle of it, whereas the American version, I just felt like a spectator like Steve Martin. There are few scenes more powerful than seeing Godzilla in the foreground, with a burning Tokyo in the background, all in black and white. A true monster movie in every sense.

This film is just an absolute masterpiece. There's so much going on in this film, yet it isn't overwhelming. A destructive but sympathetic monster who destroys Tokyo, an antinuclear message, and the Emiko and Ogata subplot, all shoved into an hour and thirty-six minutes. Then there's the tragic hospital scene, and the scene in the lab where Ogata and Serizawa debate whether the oxygen destroyer should be used. Then, the destroyed Tokyo scene kicks in. It's that moment that makes me start crying, almost like it's bursting from all the emotion that has been packed in throughout the film. And the ending finishes it all off perfectly, not ending with a joyous moment, but a somber antinuclear message. When I first saw this film, I immediately knew that it was superior to the American version. This may not be my favorite Godzilla film, but it's up there on my Top 5 list, and the lesson this film has taught me will always stick with me. To anyone who hasn't seen this film, it's worth your time. It's an hour and thirty-six minutes you won't want to take back.

Amazing atmosphere, great build up and story telling, memorable characters and great music aside - this movie gave the character a sense of scale that all showa movies and even some Heisei and Millenium movies failed to do. Godzilla is mostly shot from low angles or far away. He never really seems like "just a guy in a suit". The effects genuinely convince me more than atleast the entire showa era.

The city destruction scenes are a little dated but are still really good, The music is solid and Godzilla is one of the best he has ever been in this movie. Just rewatched Gojira last night for the first time in years, and it STILL made a profound effect upon me. While Godzilla himself doesn't show up much, he is legitimately imposing and terrifying, especially when he is accompanied by such powerful music. The characters are also not to be laughed at, all of the actors give great performances and make you really feel for them in a way that is unlike other Godzilla movies. No one is the clear hero, neither the villain. Everyone is a victim in this movie, even Godzilla himself. In a way, he's only attacking humanity because they destroyed his home with H-bomb tests, not because he's "evil." While he does carry some degree of malevolence, I won't say he's 100% wicked and evil-just an aninal mutated by nuclear tests and lashing out in anger and pain. And that, of course, is what Godzilla is all about. Even after all of these years, no one does it better than the original.

I'd always thought that the direct "Godzilla represents the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki" was a flawed interpretation of the movie, so I'm real glad you mentioned the directors military history as an inspiration for godzilla. Godzilla didn't come from some faraway land, he came from Japan, and the Japanese people knew he'd been there for centuries. The movie asks, "is it better to study Godzilla to prevent it from happening again? Or to destroy it and prevent more immediate destruction? Does the presence of a Godzilla level threat justify developing an extinction-level super weapon? If you were facing an unstoppable destructive force, would you use the bomb?" The boldest part of the movie in my opinion, was that the movie used imagery which resembled the Hiroshima aftermath. It's such a brilliant movie.

3:29 I've watched The Green Mile, Titanic, Old Yeller, The Land Before Time, and Charlotte's Web. All of them have their infamous tearjerking scenes, which are admittedly very sad. But NONE of those made me bawl my eyes out like this scene! The sight of a crying mother holding her children, completely defenseless with nowhere to run, just moments from death breaks my heart into pieces. It's so sad that it makes me want to jump into the movie and help them. They didn't deserve to die! 😭😭😭😭😭 Knowing the parallels to the innocent Japanese civilians who lost their lives at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, nothing puts us in their shoes (in my opinion) better than this scene. And it was at this moment I knew that Godzilla 1954 was one of the best anti-war films ever made in the history of cinema.

The thing about Gojira that puts it apart from its fellow monster films is that it isn’t just a good kaiju movie, it’s a good movie in general. Let’s take Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla for example. It’s a fun movie, but that’s about it. Or take Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris. It’s an amazing monster film, probably one of the best ever made, but that’s it. It’s just a good monster movie. Gojira excels as a movie and a work of art. It has a message and provides a deep meaning to a country that has truly seen the horrors of atomic power. You don’t see every monster movie get such a fan base unless it has more to say. The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms is an amazing film, but it was just a monster flick. Gojira had true purpose behind its existence, which is why it is one of the only, maybe even the only, kaiju films that can stand amongst movies like The Godfather.

Gojira is a film that, in my opinion, shouldn't be missed on any worthy class on history of filming. It's one of the most solid dramas human culture as a whole has ever provided. It's surprisingly shocking even to nowaday's standards, I can yet get out of my head the scene of that young girl crying before her mother's corpse. I wonder if she was actually one of the survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, cause that level of role investment is breathtaking for a child. This film is, to me, the proof of how cultural perspectives over the same topic can drastically differ from one another. USA's fear of atomic holocaust brought us The Beast of 20.000 Fathoms (the film that I believe inspired Ishiro Honda to create Godzilla), Them! and the Fallout franchise many years later. Japan and Russia, however, are prime witnesses of the real consequences of atomic hazards, and thus they brought us the Stalker and Metro sagas from Russia and this film from Japan. Congrats for this fantastic review :) Also, I wanna thank you for this channel's existence, thanks to you I've started my personal rewatch on the whole Toho film franchise. Long live the daikaiju!

The lone parent of all Godzilla films It's a Masterpiece, it's so different in concept and mood compared to anything else in the Franchise. Gojira is terrifying and his death toll is felt significantly. The score has an uneasy sense of dread and despair. Making Godzilla something more than an animal made it so this film stands the test of time all the more than say something like the beast from 20,000 fathoms. No offense to those who like that film but Godzilla is a staple in the world of Culture in a whole different league. It's one of the longest running series ever with no sign of slowing down As Tanaka said "As long as the arrogance of man still exists godzilla will survive" I'm paraphrasing but that's such a great quote I would love to know what he thinks of the newer Godzilla films. To see how far technology has gone to present Godzilla to modern audiences. Sure the puppet shots don't look great but everything else is still impressive to this day. For the time it's insanely innovative and iconic. Ishiro Honda is a visual genius His career life had led to what we know now. Akira Ifikube's contribution's to Gojira are timeless and we wouldn't have him as we know without him. Harou nakajima is a pioneer and legend for the series. He was a Godzilla outside the suit. Tanaka is also a huge reason we have Godzilla as we know him today, He's a juggernaut in cinema. I hope they're all proud of how far the franchise has come. 🖤🦖🤍

The motifs for Godzilla or Gojira in 1954 were an antiwar sentiment and an antinuclear idea, and these factors make original Godzilla very different from Godzilla movies later. Only nine years have passed since the end of World War II when this movie was produced in 1954, and many staffs were former Imperial Army soldiers who narrowly escaped from being killed in action, and civilians who witnessed war damage. Many movie audience also shared the same experience with staffs. The footage of Tokyo under fire might remind moviegoers at that time of an US aerial attack on Tokyo on March 10th, 1945. This movie focused on sufferings of people. For movie staffs as well as cinema audience, war was still real. I think we should learn precious teachings from original Godzilla not as simply an entertainment film.
