I've warmed up to GAM and Tokyo SOS in recent years. The plots being conduits to sustain heavy focus on the monsters and monster action are actually something I've grown to appreciate about them. I've grown to despise needlessly long films with overstuffing of material in a weak attempt to give the characters are plot some "depth". This one is quite minimalist and I love it for that.

Well, some of them, at any rate. I think official timeline includes the original Mothra, Frankenstein Conquers the World, War of the Gargantuas, King Kong Escapes, Gorarth (even though the Moon is visible in GxMG), and Space Amoeba. Other movies are debatable.

David brown, “cannon” is actually spelled canon depending on what you’re talking about. Cannon is a word for a fire arm commonly used in the early stages of warfare. Canon mean’s official to the story.

The biggest problem with Tokyo S.O.S. is that they got rid of Akane and the other characters from the previous film rather than developing them further.

Yeah. Akane had a compelling story with a nicely written arc that revolved around her learning that her life wasn't worthless and that she actually had a place in the world despite all of her mistakes, while Chujo… uh, learns that Kiryu isn't just a machine, I guess? I mean, I suppose that works for a nice arc on paper, but I don't think it's executed very well in the finished product.

Completely Agree. While I enjoy this movie, getting rid of the three leads from the previous film, really hurt this. Rendering Akane to just a cameo felt like a waste after her interesting arc from the last movie. Likewise the scientist and his daughter were charming characters and it is a shame they don't even get the luxury of a cameo. Not helped that the new characters in this movie don't really come off as nearly compelling.

Yeah that’s one thing I hate about Tokyo SOS. Akane is honestly one of the more better written human protagonist along with Seriazawa. The scene where Kiryu bids farewell to Yoshito felt like it would of fitted way better for Akane since she was the original pilot. Ik a lot of people mostly care for “haha big monsters go punch punch” rather than compelling stories, but I wish Akane was at least one of the main character instead of just being in 1 scene. (Then again, the director of the film originally wanted to kill her off along with Kiryu at the end of GXMG).

Fun fact: When I was but a wee lad I watched this movie and whilst dancing during the Mothra song I twirled around so much I got dizzy and smashed my head into my turtles tank. Thankfully my head and neck were fine but I somehow sliced my finger open and had blood squirting everywhere. I got it fixed but I forever have a scar on my right middle finger to remind me of this movie, and that's why I have such a deep connection with it.

Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. is one of my top favorite Godzilla films and the Kiryu Saga is a really cool continuity. I really think the Kiryu Saga has the potential to last several more films rather than just ending it here. Maybe Toho can do that if they want to make a new movie that takes place in a certain continuity.

Hmm... You say the film is a bare bones story that supports the special effects. An alternative interpretation is that it's a story where the Kaiju are front and center. They are the true stars, being engaged in the main conflict and going through character arcs, while the humans are the supporting cast. True, that still leaves us with lackluster humans, but this is one where you really do come and stay for the monsters. Agreed that it's not the most original thing, though. I think they may have also been saving a lot for the sequel that never materialized.

I can see your point, but a large portion of the run time is still dedicated to the human cast, and when that aspect is lacking it affects my enjoyment of the film. I think a film can have a story where the kaiju are front and center and have a solid human storyline. This one doesn't quite do it for me on the human front, but luckily the monster stuff is really good!

It's a shame we couldn't have a strong delivery on both sides of the story, but that's why Man invented scene selection.

KaijusaurusG2K well a balance can certainly be done. But does it doesn’t always need to be. I think this film excelled at what it was trying to do, and while it’s regrettable it lacks in its human scenes I can’t say it bothers me too much.

Honestly, this argument would never work. And that is what a lot of Godzilla Fans don't understand. In order to make a good film (and this is a rule every movie MUST follow), there *needs* to be good characters. KOTM did not have good characters, for example. It was made to show off effects and act as a bridge for GvK. I do like the characters in this film, but unfortunately only a handful of Godzilla films have good characters. Now the Heisei Gamera Trilogy, hohoahhh, now THOSE films have good effects and characters!

The Millennium series has always been kinda hit-or-miss for me, but I will say flat out that the Kiryu Saga is my preferred Millennium continuity (G2000 being a close second). Mainly because it firmly planted a canon timeline of events, and played around with some of the implications of said timeline, especially here in Tokyo S.O.S. Kiryu's final message ("Sayonara Yoshito") still hits me pretty hard to this day, since it's the only real time that an incarnation of Godzilla has ever communicated with humans in a language everyone can understand.

Honestly if they had kept Akane as the main lead things would’ve been better, like imagine if in this film she’s connected so much with Kiryu since the last movie that she’s grown physically attached to it and by the end of the film she finally learns to let go of Kiryu and to let him rest.

I actually just saw this on the big screen last night. It was glorious nonsense, just what I was looking for. Mothra is shedding glitter light a stripper who just started her shift, the humans are fairly irrelevant, the monsters lay waste to everything, and every man in Japan needs to visit a tailor because almost every single one of them is wearing a suit or uniform two sizes too large for them. I especially loved the nonsense that a mechanic with a couple tools in a hand carried case simply ran out into a Kaiju warzone to fix an unknown problem taking Mecha-G offline after getting smacked around by Godzilla. They only spent an entire year just trying to put it back together from the last fight and he is going to stumble out there to put it back online. The only better would have been if his tool case included only a roll of duct tape, a flat head screwdriver and an adjustable wrench. Wonderful stupidity and fun. It was cool seeing the original actor back from Mothra.

I was glad that this was a sequel to the following movie which always bugged me about about the Millennium Era. But my biggest issue with this movie and the Era is that they establish great ideas but back off them which is infuriating! Props to fun action scenes, Michiru Oshima's score non annoying kid character and giving me my favorite Mothra design in a Godzilla movie though.

This is how a sequel should be. A natural continuation to not just the previous movie, but also to other movies in the continuity. While the Heisei movies are all set in the same continuity, they show only a few references to previous entries, but are otherwise self-contained. This may be an advantage for new comers, but when it comes to sequels I prefer more continuity and world building. And my god do I love the ending. This is not only an ending for the original Godzilla's character arc, but also marks the real ending to the Millennium era for me, while Final Wars was more of a last fun ride for the fans. As far as I'm concerned, it's 4 out of 5 stars.

This is probably my favorite Godzilla movie. It doesn't do any one thing spectacularly, but it does a ton of really neat little things. It incorporates the non Godzilla Showa movies into its cannon. It gives an explanation to Mazer cannons that had been around since the 60's, but never elaborated on. Remade the best Showa movie (Mothra Vs. Godzilla) with a new angle. Brought back an actor/character from the golden era to tie things together. Actually started a Millennium continuity. Kiryu is one of the best designed kaiju ever so that's always a plus. It's the last regular Godzilla movie and probably will be the last one ever. The scene where the kid summons Mothra by dragging all of the school desks into the parking lot and making the Mothra symbol is one of the coolest scenes in any Godzilla movie ever.

Mothra is one of my favourite Godzilla monsters and this movie was great and is easily one of my top 10 Godzilla movies. It's basically a lose remake of the original Godzilla vs Mothra but with Mechagodzilla in it who is inhabited by the soul of the original 1954 Godzilla. The scenes with the twin fairies showing up for the first and Godzilla fighting the twin larvas was such nice throwback to the original Godzilla vs Mothra, they even brought Hiroshi Koizumi back who played the same character from the original Mothra movie. I am not a fan of the millennium series to say the least but this one is definitely a highlight if you get the references to the older Godzilla movies

I'm not sure why, but I've always felt that the Godzilla suit used in this movie has more fluidity in its movements and a better sense of expression on its face when compared to the previous movie, even though it's practically the same suit (aside from the huge scar on the chest). Still, I loved this move's action scenes, although the human scenes lack the compelling drama of the previous film up until the very final scene when Kiryu is flying out to sea and it says goodbye to Chujo. THAT was an epic moment and perhaps the most emotional moment in the film when you realize that Kiryu is an intelligent being and not just a beast held within a metal cage. I also LOVE Michiru Oshima's score during that scene as it hits just the right emotional notes to compliment the action onscreen, and the ending credit music is absolutely beautiful.

I think the best way I can describe Tokyo S.O.S is a movie with a potentially great plot that gets scrapped and substituted with one that’s still pretty good but not nearly as good as the other one would’ve been, I thought the initial idea that they were setting up in the beginning of Mothra being the villain of the movie because she’s not happy with the existence of MechaGodzilla sounded really cool, how awesome would it have been to see MechaGodzilla facing off against both Godzilla and Mothra? But unfortunately they don’t actually go through with that and it ultimately just goes down a more conventional path by just having MechaGodzilla and Mothra teaming up against Godzilla, so this movie is still pretty entertaining but at the same time it does feel like a bit of a missed opportunity

This movie made my kids (5 and 3) into superfans. It's a terrific one to introduce both young boys and young girls to the franchise, and for that alone it gets this parent's top rating. No over-the-top violence or horror imagery, nothing too weird or hard to explain. From my perspective, the bare bones plot worked out kind of ideally on that level. Also, unlike some "kids" media, I liked watching it with them. That is so rare. Also, Mothra also looks amazing. My daughter fell in love with her.

Tokyo sos is fine. I love that they upgraded mechagodzilla, as well as bringing Godzilla back in a nuanced way to fight mechagodzilla, but everything else is boring, unoriginal and getting really stale. The effects are once again, top notch though. I do remember really liking this movie when I was younger and I do have it on DVD, but it's not as good as I remember. By no means is it bad though, so I give it 6.7/10.

I think we share some of the same frustrations as far as the 'Kiryu Saga' is concerned: They're visually spectacular and brimming with potential, but shallow in pretty much every regard besides visual. I had this thought while I was listening to this review, an idea of what these movies could have been, that might have alleviated our frustrations. Imagine Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla as a meta-commentary on the direction the franchise has taken. Mechagodzilla is literally a perversion of the remains of the original Godzilla, there's so much thematic potential there as far as the state of the franchise in that concept, and could go any number of ways. And then, instead of rushing Tokyo SOS out for a 2003 release, make it the golden anniversary of the G-Man. This would serve the dual purpose of giving the filmmakers time to craft a more engaging narrative around the monsters, and sending a message for Godzilla's 50th, the same one the Shobijin are sending to the human characters of Tokyo SOS; Out of respect for Godzilla, it's time to let him return to the sea, to put him (both as an in-universe being and as a franchise) to rest.

Fun fact: the director of the movies said in a quotethat the original Godzilla whose bones were used to make mechagodzilla it's the current Godzilla's father during this a deep family relation between the two more than just them being similar and just coming from the same species.

Imo, this movie could of been as good as GXMG if Akane actually played a main role in the movie (ngl, I feel like Yoshito was just simply a replacement for Akane). Doesn’t make sense why they build her and Sarah’s development in GXMG, only to then void it all in the next.

I love Tokyo SOS but that's probably because it was one of my earliest Godzilla movies and I didn't really know about any other Godzilla movies as a kid despite my local Blockbuster most likely having many other Godzilla movies at the time. I mainly blame this on me hyperfocusing on this one movie. Like what others have said in this comment section, this film could've been much more if they had kept some of the original cast. Actually, I think they could've introduced us to Chujo, Dr. Chujo, the new hotshot pilot and love interest girl if they had a better script and increased the run time by an extra 30 minutes. Maybe have Akane chastise Akiba for his reckless piloting? Or have Dr. Chujo consult with Yuhara on...something? Idk? I wonder if Toho will ever come back to the Milennium era, regardless of Shin's uhh soft reboot?

Godzilla X Mothra X Mechagodzilla is a personal favorite. I found the human characters a but more engaging than some did. The film is beautifully shot. The all night, three-way battle between Godzilla, Mechagodzilla and Mothra is a highlight of the entire Series. GMMG is a better ending to the Millennium films than Final Wars. The Kiryu-Goji and Kiryu are convincingly filmed as massive creatures, those low angle shots being especially impressive. Notable was the scene involving Chujo meeting with the brass following his dust up with Akiba. It would seem that they were purposefully filmed in a way so as to present them as faceless bureaucrats.

Tokyo S.o.s has a different feel from the previous The mothra/larvae dynamic is entertaining at least Though Godzilla is always meant to be a monster at the end where he's lethargic is oddly tragic. The vulnerable animal like sounds are fitting. Kiryu finally being able to rest in peace is beautiful I liked the touch at the end where it says goodbye to the audience. Godzilla fatigue had to have set in Surprisingly enough in Godzilla's home country. There was at least more time between Godzilla's heisei run. The back to back films and decreasing budget had to have attributed to the box office numbers. Godzilla: Tokyo S.o.s is an action packed symphony of destruction. My top 3 are GMK. Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla/Tokyo S.o.s And Final Wars. Depending on what i'm in the mood for. 🦖🦋🤖

Honestly I liked this one way more than final wars, Finals wars felt like it was rushing through every fight just to get every monster in the film. Sure it had its moments but The cg in final wars was more off putting than in previous movies in the millennium series. My favorite Godzilla movies are still Godzilla against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla vs. Destroyah. This one was a good end for Kiryu.

I really loved Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, also the human characters ( a rare thing for godzilla movies in my opinion) So i wanted to see more of the humans. But no no, the send them all to the USA and have some idiots replace them. The repair guy is also just a carbon copy from the repair guy from Godzilla VS Megaguirus. I like that one and ofcourse Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla alot more. I did not excpect it, but my favorite era seems to be the Showa era :p although i also love the heisei series

They should've had Kiryu become fullly sentient in this movie and had him choose to fight Godzilla willingly.This would've made the scene towards the end of the make alot more sense

If The Return of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Biolante, what else would you expect Toho to do? To be fair, though, I can remember when a character or actor from a previous movie showing up in a remake or sequel was a pleasant surprise, not something "fans" felt entitled to.

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. are the two films in my favorite Godzilla series. However, I do not consider these two films as an era. Do to that, I consider the Heisei series my favorite era, for all the reasons mentioned in your video regarding the Heisei series.

2nd best movie in this series after GMK, like virtually everything in the millennium series it's all been done/seen before and typically done better, but I'll give credit where it's due, it's a good looking Godzilla movie overall for the time, and improves upon it's predecessor which laid the foundation.

Godzilla Tokyo S.O.S. is a hard film to label. You could say that it's a distractedly fast-paced and entertaining monster movie, bit that wouldn't be quite true due to it's connections with the past. You could say that it's a very deep film with explicit and thorough connections to the older films, but that wouldn't be true due to its huge kaiju battles. The human characters are good, but after seeing this one directly after Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla I can officially say that the characters in the last movie were much better. The penultimate battle, which might be the longest and most diverse battle in the whole series, is legitimately entertaining, although it suffers from two problems: A. Mothra and her larvae feel like afterthoughts, barely doing anything to stop Godzilla until the very end, where he just stands there and lets himself be webbed up. B. The Mechagodzilla repair scene is not only confusing to anyone who isn't a seasoned mechanic, it's also very slow compared to the rest of the film. Aside from that, everything else is great. The score is STILL incredible, though sadly this is the last time we hear it in a Godzilla movie. Overall, Tokyo S.O.S. is not a bad or boring film. Instead, it's the opposite of that-an entertaining film with a lot of great effects and action scenes. Usually the sequels to movies that did well are horrible and not worth the effort, but it looks like Tokyo S.O.S. managed to avoid the curse.

Question: i noticed the millenium series doesnt play as much of godzilla’s theme compared to the heisei era. I rmmbr watching the heisei movies n the theme will appear almost everytime godzilla appears. Anyone knows why?

I didn't like that they changed the first female pilot of Mechagodzilla that she was great in her role for that new guy who wasn't any charismatic. Also the movie while quite entertaining, it didn't work out as good as the previous one that I love.

Hmmmm, I must say while binging your reviews I do notice you being less than impressed with a lot of millennium entries. It’s understandable but I can’t say I agree with all your critiques, and when I do I can’t say they effect my overall enjoyment of these films. The lack of continuity between most of them could be jarring for some Yes but I think it actually matched my viewing experience of the entire series at large. Where I had to find each and every movie out of order from place to place anyhow, heck I even watched SOS before I got a Chance to watch GXM, it allowed me to see past each era of Godzilla for the most part and just feel his over encompassing presence as Godzilla not matter what storyline he is in and no matter what role he plays in it. Does it borrow much from earlier installments? Yes but I would argue heisei did similar and I is far less criticized Of it. a lot of the characters less than remarkable but even some of the best human characters in these movies are either one shots or rather forgettable all the same. I’m convinced the effects with these movies were about as good as the series is going to get as well if we never return to suitmation and animatronics again.

I liked GxM, but the lack of a compelling lead dropped this one down a lot, as well as the much worse pacing of the fight- multiple stretches of several minutes where Godzilla is effectiveness nothing makes it one of the worst-paced monster fights (just above Hedorah, but well below JJ/Megalon and Gigan/Ghidorah for other long-ones), cancelling out the impact of cool moments since for too much time everyone's just, well, waiting. The finale being the Heisei-standard 'dump into the sea' we've seen a dozen times just adds to the derivativeness. While GxM is one of the better Millennium films, SoS is my least fav. While technically better done than Megaguiras, half the movie feels like winking 'remember mothra? remember last movie?' while the bug movie was at least new.

My main issue with the film. Godzilla was beaten up too much. He didn’t even get to fight back once. Only when firing his breath at Mechagodzilla.
