I was so not a fan of this one when it first released. It wasn't so much a problem with the content itself (although I wasn't crazy about anime ninja people in a Godzilla movie), but the timing. We knew that this was going to be the final Godzilla before Toho did another hiatus, and who knew how long it would last this time? (as it turned out 12 years) In the face of such indefinite absence, I was hoping at the time the last Godzilla would be more serious, something closer to the original. Final Wars was obviously the opposite of that. So I didn't care for it one bit. These days I love watching it. Everything about it is glorious. Gimme that ridiculous shit in my veins, man.

This one was also originally going to be a sequel to Destoroyah, following the grown-up Godzilla Jr. from the ending of that film. They even started building the models expecting Godzilla to be the same size as the Heisei era (100 meters tall) before Toho just decided to make it another stand-alone film. Also, I wish they could have integrated Jet Jaguar in the movie. My idea was that he would have been built by the military (similar to Kiryu) and maybe even take down one of the weaker monsters like Ebirah or whatever, but then immediately get destroyed by Gigan (since they fought each other in the Showa era)

happy 20th anniversary godzilla final wars!!! :3 i loved how much of a final roll call to godzilla's line up it was (and finally giving zilla the beatdown they built up in a satisfyingly hilarious take that/the creator taking it in stride enjoying it.) in a fun milestone(in a way reminds me of sonic generations) that had a nice use of the human characters.(especially don frye who's basically "what if mike haggar went against godzilla" as he played him in a final fight fan film.) only real problems i had were the matrix/star wars callbacks being the weakest part that are where it became a mess as it should've been cut for more kaiju screentime(honestly would've liked the basis for it being the vials we see in tokyo s.o.s's stinger being stolen by the xillian leader to lead into it.). hedorah getting wrecked when he's the one that's even more than ghidorah gave godzilla the most trouble(all the others i could see heisei taking on reasonably, hilarious in hindsight with how actually broken godzilla earth was and do love they made up for it with that short.),gigan could've been handled a bit better as he comes back only to get his head sliced off by his own attack/blown up by mothra(did like her appearance and her surviving at the end.:3) and think monster x should've been the xillian leader transforming in a final form or fusing the ship with ghidorah. though find it more fun tbh than destroy all monsters(that was a bigger mess for what it was trying where the humans just being bad taking the screen time/the aliens being way more fun here and the monsters having a better showing even if some should've shown up at the finale like the big g's allies.)even if the millenium series had a lot of flaws with rebooting itself(megaguiras is still the one with no substance at all outside one scene) or retreading previous eras i thought it had great potential and to me this was a good goodbye to godzilla until the monsterverse/reiwa era.

I LOVE this film and see it as a Celebration...a party, if you will. After all, as an anniversary, time to celebrate, right? If I had to guess, that was probably the intent. Anyone who thinks it's too frantic/energetic/wild, should realise Gojira is just a 'small' part of an entire tokusatsu genre...which often is exactly this frenetic/energetic/wild. Final Wars is more in line with the main tokusatsu genre IMHO (which is fine by me)

...Whelp. I really liked this movie, warts and all, as a younger man. I've heard people ceaselessly crap on it in the years since, and not always in ways I thought were fair. But, I've watched many of your other reviews. I've found your judgement fair and reasonable overall. So, as I start this video... no matter what, I respect your opinion.

Final Wars was my reintroduction to Godzilla after the 1998 tri-star film rofl. This was the film that got me hyped for 2014 and made me go see the 1954 film + others along with Pacific rim.

I already told this in another video, but what the hell, it was funny. There's a subway station in Mexico City with a small theater where movies are screened for free as a form to promote cultural literacy among the population. Typically the flicks that are screened are what I can only really describe as "true cinephile kino", so stuff that's acclaimed but that you don't really see recommended on Netflix or most cinemas. Sometimes, though, they do screen stuff that most people are familiar with, and back in november they screened Godzilla 2000, GMK, and Final Wars to celebrate Godzilla's 70th anniversary. Unfortunately I couldn't go watch them because it conflicted with my schedule, but since I typically have to go through that station I still caught a glimpse of the screenings anyway, and when Final Wars was being screened, I happened to come across the part Godzilla yeets Kumonga, and when that happened, the theater, which, mind you, was pretty packed, started cheering like if we had just won the World Cup. I swear I've never felt prouder of being a G-fan, and it really just goes to show that even if kaiju flicks do genuinely work as high art, sometimes all you need is giant monsters just beating the crap out of each other for a good time

For the most part I have to agree with you, although the last scene in which Minila and the boy get Godzilla and the humans to stop fighting is a personal favorite of mine.

I will always say this; I would rather watch an entertaining movie that's not very good or has it's flaws, over a slow, boring, slick looking movie that thinks it's smarter than what it is. By 2004, what could they do? Re-make the original, or try and simply reboot another classic villain for the screen? Nah, just throw all the Godzilla tropes in a blender, add some western action movie influence (Works for John Woo and the Chinese action flicks, why not Japan?) and just go to town with it. This movie knows what it's doing, it's entertaining and celebrating 50 years of Godzilla and for 2 hours of your life, it's not that much to exchange.

Once Godzilla reaches it's *100th Anniversary* , Toho will create an ultimate series of Godzilla and other Kaiju movies called the *MEGAVERSE* (A combination of *all* of the Godzilla series including the *Monsterverse* )!!!!
