I remember this movie! The giant octopus destroying the Golden Gate Bridge is just an iconic ray harryhausen movie scene and an influential scene at that, as this inspired future Kaiju and disaster movies to use this iconography of the Golden Gate Bridges destruction!

I saw this movie on television when I was a kid. The beginning was a little slow and I did want to see the monster during the first attack on the submarine, but after the introduction of the main characters, it picks up a little speed with the brief attack scenes before the attack on the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco. Each tentacle was a menacing monster crushing everything and anyone in their path. Another scene I thought was cool was the electronic mine field. The technicians manning the monitoring devices did an excellent job. Actress Faith Domergue said in an interview that science fiction is a lot of fun to do but it limits an actor’s range. Though not perfect, It Came From Beneath The Sea is a good monster movie.

I own a book about Ray Harryhausen's special effects work called Ray Harryhausen's Film Fantasy Scrapbook that I highly recommend. In the book Harryhausen also talks about this movie. In order to save money the monster had six instead of eight tentacles. Stock footage of the Golden Gate Bridge was used because the city of San Francisco didn't want to give permission to photograph the bridge (presumably because the city didn't want to undermine public confidence in the safety of the bridge, even though in the movie it's destroyed by a fantasy creature).
@scado56794 жыл бұрын
As a natural fan of cephalopods (squids, octopi, etc.) I really liked the monster in this movie. It carries the same sort of alien ingenuity that real-life octopi have while still clearly being a normal animal mutated by radiation. While the movie itself is not as good as 20,000 Fathoms (at least in my opinion!) the titular monster definitely is, and it will forever hold the place in my heart as the best monster realized by stop-motion effects. Also, gotta love how you only upload when I'm at work ;)

I remember the first time I used youtube, and found a music video that contained clips from this movie, Beast from 20000 ft, the black scorpion, the giant claw, the giant behemoth and 20 million miles to earth. It was a fun video and it instantly got me wanting to see all of those movies. I would recommend The Giant Behemoth, as it is kinda like the Beast from 20000 fathoms, but a bit scarier (the monster there can shoot radiation that burns people).

A couple points, first sci fi, monster movies, and horror movies from the 1940s - 1960s are pack full of strong women scientists or reporters. Also being so close to world war 2 the submarine scenes were probably almost expected by the target audience who were used to scenes like those.

I'm really surprised you gave it three stars. I loathed Pete. His introduction paints him as a walking metoo case- "You're drafted. Now that I'm your superior officer, let me pull you into the other room to hit on you. Btw, is that guy your boyfriend?". That, the slow pacing even compared to Beast, and the fact that aside from the bridge scene It only really threatens about one tentacle length from shore plus it's less spectacular defeat compared to Rhedosaurus, put this one at my absolutely bottom of 50s giant monster movies. If Giant Claw and Beast are 7s, and Kronos and 20 Million Miles are 8s, this is a 2-3. Remove Pete and maybe a 5.
