i really liked the 2015 movie and can't wait till the new one comes out but i can also see why people didn't like it too much for me the most disappointing thing about the 2015 godzilla movie was the over use of the human cast and the lack of balls to show godzilla till the end. but for me that just makes the end so good the hype to see what he can do. hopefully king of the monsters will show more of the kaiju and less of the main human crew because we really don't care about family drama or love stories going nowhere

I always thought of Shin Godzilla as a remake of Gojira 1954. I don’t mean this in a bad way because Shin Godzilla has many scenes that are similar and the same to the original. And both were created in order to warn people of something. The original was created to warn people about Nuclear and atomic power while on the other hand, Shin Godzilla was created to warn about when you underestimate a natural disaster.
@Unforgiven115 жыл бұрын
His atomic breath in this movie was off the chain. I love how it starts as fire but as the reaction inside him kicks up and he goes into melt-down mode the intensity of the fire blast kicks up to a focused energy beam. Amazing stuff

Yeah, I also really liked how his breath went from a fire-storm to an unstoppable laser-beam, cutting through anything in its path. Gojira slicing buildings in half like a hot knife going through butter, that was awesome.

I'm afraid I must agree with you. Godzilla (1954) was a groundbreaking tokusatsu with a daring script. But it was edited in a way that disrupted the tone of some scenes. That doesn't make it a bad movie, just a product of its times. Ishiro Honda was only 5 years into his career. The French New Wave would not begin for several years. And the James Bond franchise, which influenced both Japanese media and Hideaki Anno, would not release a movie for eight more years. There is nothing wrong with saying that Shin Godzilla surpasses Godzilla in several ways -- as long as that person respects how important the movie was for changing cinema in Japan and abroad.

Char Aznable Yeah, because dickheads like Gojira5400. He just hates on Shin Godzilla because it’s not directed towards the American audience. He just wants Kaiju battles, which is not what Godzilla was and considers Shin a bastardized version of Godzilla and how Legendary Godzilla is perfect.
@scaper84 жыл бұрын
@Char Aznable I simply do not agree. It will be remembered, I believe, as one of the high-water marks of the franchise. Along with the likes of 1954's _Gojira_ and 1984's _Return of Godzilla,_ and possibly/probably _Mothra vs. Godzilla,_ _Godzilla vs. Biollante, _GMK,_ and perhaps a few others.z Related, I really, really like 2016's American _Godzilla_ and _love_ 2019's _King of the Monsters,_ and I don't doubt that they will be well remembered as well, but more of being generally well received American adaptations rather than for their inert quality. Conversely, I didn't really like the anime trilogy all that much, but I suspect that they will be talked about due to, if nothing else, their highly experimental nature.

I love this version of Godzilla, his evolutionary concept, design, and him being a literal abomination against humanity was fresh and interesting and I bought into all of that. This is also one of the most well directed Godzilla movies i've seen, it was very good shots of Godzilla, the effects are very well done and the tone that this film was going for worked. All of which couldn't have been better without Hideaki Anno. Also find it ironic that this movie, with a 15 million dollar budget, has better cgi and practical effects than most big budget Hollywood blockbusters. I give this movie a 8.3/10.

The Godzilla film I've been waiting countless years for, one that goes back to it's roots while being an updated version, it's everything I had hoped the 2014 movie would've been, but ultimately wasn't. But from the perspective of the humans, he’s an unstoppable force of destruction, with nothing to stand in the way of him ravaging the entire country of Japan single-handedly. He has a presence of pure fear, and I love it. First time I’ve been scared of Godzilla since the original film. The music here is another highlight. Using the old Ifukube tracks is great, but the original tracks used in the film are amazing. Tracks like Persecution of the Masses, Defeat Is No Option, and Who Will Know all have a haunting feeling that further cements the fear you feel when Godzilla is onscreen.

I was a bit on the fence at first, but the scenes when they start to attack Godzilla were great, and his response to the Stealth attack was fantastic. I realized my mouth was open when Godzilla unleashed the breath weapons. Fantastic

Thanks for giving this film justice. It deserves much more praise and love than the rest of the other movies. This and 1954 are the top movies. Both equally matched. I had the honor to see it in theater here in puerto rico and let me tell you. I will never ever forget that day.

I remember my brother bought tickets fir the 2 of us to see Shin in theaters. Was an amazing experience and the fans around us were true. Since the film was only in theaters around us for 2 weeks, the place was packed. I agree 100% with your review, also i have the same book as you the Godzilla Compendium. Grew up reading it throughout middle school and so on. Nice to know a true fan is making these amazing reviews and can't wait for the future films reviews.

Excellent review. I wasn't a Godzilla fan until I watched this movie. At 04:02. That exact moment is the perfect showcase for the good acting in this movie. I actually watched it last night and at that moment when they discuss the possibility of dropping nuclear bombs on Japan again and he reacts like that I went like "Ohhhhh, good acting!".

I love what you said about this film being an "aspiration" by a Japanese filmmaker - too often the West (esp film twitter and film youtube) likes to dismiss anything appearing nationalistic coming out of non-Western countries as "propaganda" - but this film isn't afraid to mock or criticize what it saw as Japan's failures...it just hopes that the next generation might learn from those painful mistakes...a far cry from the acclaimed American godzilla in which FEMA is super efficient and American special forces are everywhere all at once and can kill the monsters good.

I don't care what anyone says, Shin Godzilla is my favorite Godzilla movie, It's feels refreshing to get something new, but familiar in the franchise, we hardly ever get to see Godzilla as a serious figure in a movie, and it has something important to say, about America and Japan, and instead of the movie being dragged out by heavy dialogue just to get the plot going, even though this movie has a lot of talking, it's there for a reason, everything was put in for a reason in this film. There's just a lot to love about this film. The Design of Godzilla, his abilities, the story, his evolutions,THE MUSIC! it's all great! However it does get over whelming at times,due to things happening a lot, theres not enough music, and yes the talking, there's a lot of it, and I can see why this movie isn't big on the main stream in America, yet I do see why it is in Japan when it came out.

Alex youtube channel look if you like Giant monster brawls and nothing more, than that’s fine, but I like to have more than just icing, I want the cake. Godzilla deserves to be more than just giant monsters fighting, the Big-G Needs better characters and story if it’s ever going to hit the kind of main stream the Avengers movies have.

Something I loved from this is that almost all the USA reviewers went "This film feels anti-american. No kidding even the guys at kotaku said something like that. What you think the world is kissing USA's ass in real life like in American movies? xD
@trsniffy4 жыл бұрын
It feels anti-American because the depiction of any American character or viewpoint is painted in broad, one-dimensional villain colors. Even Kayoco is only redeemed when she rejects her American upbringing and "becomes Japanese". The moment that the American scientists slip out of the collaborative effort because they got the information they wanted was the point the filmmakers fully committed to Cannon Films level "foreigners are bad and can't be trusted". The satire that works so well in the rest of film thuds because its presentation of the Japan-American relationship completely lacks any thoughtfulness and humanity, and it borders on the kind of ugly ethnic nationalism that much of the world is embroiled in now, especially the United States (which is extremely anti-science, which shows just how wrongheaded Shin Godzilla is about its take, made before Trump won the election). It felt utterly out-of-place in an otherwise amazingly biting and horrifying film.

Shin is Amazing It's the sensational update a traditional Japanese Godzilla needed for ages. It's design is reminiscent of his showa days while being terrifying and imposing. The score when he uses his atomic breagh is appropriate and epic. The reveal of him using his tail and back spikes and purple look threw me for a huge loop. It's something we haven't seen and was executed masterfully. The military's approach was more sensible in this compared to any other. Using more logical strategy and not just throwing away lives for spectacle alone. The deleted forms are a whole other conversation bordering on horror and cosmic terror. The politics and human aspects may be criticized by some but it's just as important to add human context to the destruction and how to stop this villainous monster. It's the closest we will ever get to a full remake of Gojira from 1954. It's one of those films like GMK and Gojira that standalone and you could show to new fans without having to watch anything prior. I hope there's something planned for Shin Godzilla to return in the near future 🖤🦖❤

I knew King of The Monsters wouldn't have a chance competing with this film, I was unfortunately right. Shin-Godzilla is the reminder that Godzilla from the very beginning has been a symbol of destruction, the horror created by mankind. I love this film because it's about Japan vs Godzilla in the best way possible since the original film, America will always see Godzilla as the hero and Japan, even though they created the monster fighting element, will always remember that Godzilla was the harbinger of death and destruction.

I don't know. I still feel like this movie is dangerously close to being a propaganda piece, one that falls far short of Godzilla's other solo outings. Then again, I'll take it over the Anime Trilogy any day of the week.
@EvangelionFan-ru7ri5 жыл бұрын
The original was one though...
@omniviewer21155 жыл бұрын
@@EvangelionFan-ru7ri The original film could not be propaganda. There were too many restrictions on Postwar Japan's film industry for it to be propaganda. So instead, the filmmakers had to put most of their focus on all of those elements that go into making a good film and keep the political undertones a bit more subtle. Shin, by comparison, is so overt in its political overtones that everything else about the story falls to the wayside, or exists only to further those themes. I really need to make my own video on the topic. Explaining the whole thing takes a lot of space, and I don't want this comment to be too long.
@EvangelionFan-ru7ri5 жыл бұрын
@@omniviewer2115 Whether they were allowed to or not, that is what it became. The film was originally panned in japan for being exploitative and wasnt looked at as a classic until it played for US japanese communities. The way that film is shot and presented, it is easy to classify it as a propaganda piece. This does not make films bad.

Shin Godzilla is my favorite entry in the series, even surpassing the original. All my favorite Godzilla movies are the ones where he is unequivocally the villain, and the way this Godzilla is essentially a cold, brainless mass of destruction with power unseen in the series at the point of release, it's truly terrifying. I am scared of Shin Godzilla, and that in and of itself makes it the best interpretation bar none.

I just saw this film for the first time today and loved it! It did remind me so much of the original Gojira, just as you said. And the human part of it was well written enough that I didn't get too impatient like I do with some of the Godzilla/kaiju films. I also liked the odd design and new abilities. Why not update him a bit? Anyone who hasn't seen it should spend the $3-4 and rent it on amazon.

This is one of my all time favorite Godzilla movies. I actually like it better than the two recent "Legendary" Films. It really focuses on the helplessness of government red tape and the inadequacy of the military or government to cope with the situation. The scenes are intense and this Godzilla has some really cool new weapons to employ.
