“Superman: Up in The Sky” would be such a perfect storyline to adapt for a live-action Superman film

@Unikatze yeah, it's hard not to. From the leaked bts photos, to the interviews that Gunn gives, to him inviting Superman writers and artists on set INCLUDING the families of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, to even getting the late Christopher Reeve's youngest son to have a cameo in the film. It definitely feels like the first real good Superman film in 40 years.

Wow, such a great explanation of the importance of Superman in the comics. By being the most overpowered, he is the most in touch, and representative of humanity. Also really loved the bit about the separation of Clark and Superman.

One of My favorites thing about this book is whenever there something impossible for a person to do, something can't be accomplished, a contradiction, something no one can do, and when superman did it, they all said the same thing about Clark "He's superman" I really like that, you don't need to explain why an alien can do whatever he want but be a hero instead or beat a super villain that the whole JL lost to or run faster than the flash or how an alien can punch a multiversal being or why would Clark leave everything to save a someone he doesn't even know is alive or not, you don't need an explanation for any of that All characters always have a personal reason to go out of their way and fight through the universe to save someone, but not Superman and the answer is simple and obviously and everyone know it "It's because......he's Superman"

I read Superman:Year One before this. The short, clipped dialog and narraration of that book, along with the almost modern mythological story it tells, had me reading it in the voice of another wholesome Midwest American hero, BJ Blaskowitz. It was like Superman meets Sin City. So then I read this and his short, determined phrases had me reading it the same way. Every "no sir, I do not." or "no sir, it will not." I again read in his voice. These modern Superman stories were so similar in pacing to the newest Wolfenstein games' that it was awesome. Come to think of it, superman is shit on alot by non-fans, but he's DC's spider-man. Similar family element, the guy juggling the responsibility of 2 lives, but also in the "determinator" factor. For example, Spiderman can lift around 10 tons. Except when he has no other choice but to push a little harder to save someone else,and he does. Both men have the weight of the world on their shoulders and will carry it because they have to, even if people say they can't. This video covers that theme well.

Up in the sky is a great Superman story that shows how Superman's compassion for others far exceeds his powers. It's not Superman's powers that make him special, it's the heart he has that allows him to use his powers to help others that makes Superman so special. Superman gets his heart from the world that took him in when he was orphaned and the kindly human couple that raised him. Superman is neither boring nor overpowered. He isn't the most powerful being in DC and his desire to help people in an imperfect world that sometimes doesn't appreciate him makes Superman interesting. Superman is the greatest superhero to me, and Up In The Sky is a great Superman story because it understands why Clark Kent is Superman.

I also love the fact that they kinda edited the commonly used "Because I'm Batman." justification for Superman. How does he fly? He's Superman. How is it that despite all odds, he beat Flash in that race? Because he's Superman. Why travel across galaxies to rescue one kid? Because he's Superman. How did he break free from the strongest metal chains ever? Because he's Superman. Even Batman admits it. "We were in need. He's Superman." Not because he's a demigod. But because he's Superman. He. Never. Gives. Up. He is the ultimate rebuttal to pessimistic impossibility. When everyone asks, "What if you fail?", Superman embodies the reply, "But what if you win?"

I remember thinking this story was pretty good and liking the art, but two things continually annoyed me. First, I remember the child being abducted from Gotham and Batman calling Superman in. But, if I remember correctly, the summaries in the subsequent issues said the child was from Metropolis. Also, what Superman was this? Pa Kent was still alive, but Superman could fly to Rann, which, until I remembered the Starbreaker story from JLA 96, I didn't think even the pre-Crisis Superman could do. And how did he expect to bring the child back without a ship or a spacesuit?

The hardest story telling of being overpowered is it isn't relatable. If superman took the one punch angle then it becomes good . But superman was a niche destroyed by time like back in the day, flight, strength and speed in a movie was a great dream so a overpowered individual showcasing his abilities was great enough but limiting. Now try telling a story about lex a human against clark is boring because we have to limit superman to a human for the story telling to work. Then superman has human like problems and super human solutions
@benmarton7849
@benmarton7849 Жыл бұрын
'Relatability' is irrelevant. Superman stories are fables. And fables aren't about characters; they are about archetypes. So you don't 'relate' to their protagonists; you relate to their ideas.

Here is the thing, this might be unpopular opinion. I don't like the over the top nature of Tom king superman's story here. But, mind you I'm not against the themes and message of the story and what superman stands for. Yet, there is something astrange about this. For me, superman is not the impossible man who does anything or everything. But, a man with super who can do the seemingly impossible, but wise enough to know he can't do all the impossible. I Hope that makes sense.
@Kalashee

While I do pretty much agree with almost everything you say throughout the video, imo, you perfectly - and ironically - highlight THE VERY THING that makes superman disinterest quite a few people (yes, myself included): The. Man. Can. Do. Anything. I agree; superman is less of an actual character than he is a symbol, or a metaphor. That I can understand. However, that notion seems a bit disingenuous when we remember that, like literally every other fictional character (at least, the humanized ones), he has a backstory, parents, likes/dislikes, thoughts, opinions, feelings, emotions, strengths (basically everything), “weaknesses” (nothing he can’t completely overcome somehow)… everything that makes a character, a character. To handwave away any and all criticism on the basis that “he’s justifiably unlimitedly powerful because he’s the ultimate paragon of heroism & compassion”… that’s just boring. We get it; Jesus allegory because everything has to be a Jesus allegory because it sells. But that doesn’t excuse the ultimate problem, which is: We all KNOW he’s going to win, BECAUSE he’s Superman (and at least for me personally, i have a serious dislike for Batman for that exact same reason, only there’s almost no subtlety when it comes to him). I’m not saying Supes is a bad character, or has bad stories, or you can’t do anything with him, or any of that 100% detractor bullshit. But I am saying that it’s incredibly unengaging to see someone win all the time, made even worse when you have to stretch even the most extreme of extremes to desperately fabricate scenarios that basically says “See? They can too be challenged!”. It’s inorganic and just comes across as reflexive against dwindling sales/dropping interest rather than a legit crafted storyline. At the end of it all, while superman is just far too powerful as a character to hold my interest in particular, he is by no means unworthy of the praise and admiration he gets; there’s plenty of good arguments FOR him as there are against him.

It's pretty simple. And no offense, but I really don't understand why seemingly intelligent readers don't seem to get this: Every superhero narrative finds its level through the simple expedient of narrative equivalency. Batman? Ra's Al Ghul (driven, brilliant, physically capable). Green Lantern? Sinestro (egocentric, creative, willful). The Flash? Professor Zoom (you get the idea...). So this simple balancing of the equation means the 'power' question is rendered irrelevant. And anybody who respects the ideas at the heart of Superman's appeal tends to have no desire for power or dominance, so it ceases to become a factor in his narrative. So questions of 'winning' or 'losing' fade to nothing. Look at the example of more modern iterations of Lex Luthor; he's driven by envy and frustration because he cannot see beyond the metric of power, advantage, and renown. He cannot understand that Superman possesses powers and abilities that he would not seek if he did not have. It's almost as if readers who carry on about him being 'over-powered' or 'always winning' seek to identify more with his villains, who have not yet learned that quantifying goodness or compassion can only ever measure and monetise it. Or, y'know, go and read 'All-Star Superman.'
