It's surprising that one of the most famous cynical writers that once wrote Batman comics, wrote a, probably one of the best, Superman comic ever written. Morrison wrote this as to stand up to the rampant cynicism in the comics that time, kinda like how Kingdom Come was an answer to the growing gritty themes of superhero comics. Morrison proved that Superman can still be relatable by going back to the character's roots: a god trying to live as a man.
@johnathonhaney82914 жыл бұрын
The thing about Morrison is that I think classical superheroes ground and improve his work. When you look at something like The Invisibles, it's obvious that the big ideas wind up killing the story itself, cheapening both in the process. But All-Star Superman and Superman Forever? No less trippy, no less full of heady concepts but the storytelling is light years more relatable because there's a familiar anchor point. You also see it in the Shazam chapter of Multiversity and his Batman story Gothic with Klaus Janson.
@galactic853 ай бұрын
Famous cynical writers? Dude Morrison is one of the most optimistic writers in comics. Have you heard their kathmandu story? They are all about zen and how superman is more powerful than a nuclear bomb because before the bomb was real it was an idea and how superman is an idea too and he is the one thing capable of defeating a nuclear bomb.

I mostly agree but I think both perspectives on heroes are necessary, especially at the time Watchmen was written no one really examined or criticized the genre like that. @@rararasputin8608 I wouldn't call "All-Star" fluffy. There is actually a lot to unpack if you look closely. One of my favorite motifs employed by Morrison in the story is the "world in miniature" element. We have the bottle city of kandor which represents a bright and optimistic future. We have Lex Luthor, claiming that the prison he is in is an embodiment of the world in a miniature form, representing a darker and more cynical interpretation of society. And finally we have the entire universe that superman creates himself, the one modeled after our world. There are some interesting ideas to unpack there.

I think that there is. Not in such a grandiose, massive scale way like Superman. And sadly, not all the time, for everyone. - Not yet, anyway. But I've always thought part of the idea of it all is, just because none of us are *super*man, that maybe we can't all fly to a ledge in the nick of time like he can. But what we can do, what we can really do, is go to someone that's having a hard time, or you think is having a hard time, and ask them 'are you ok?' Then offer them a cup of tea and ask them. "Are you *really* ok?" ( #asktwice ) To me, Superman isn't about a benevolent force, greater and better than us that can solve our problems for us. It's about showing us a hope that we can be better ourselves. "They can be a great people, Kal-El, they wish to be. *They only lack the light to show the way.* For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you.... my only son."

@ProjektTaku Жыл бұрын
But I also appreciate it showing that Lex's hate from Supes comes from a personal issue that he covers up with a grander "You can't trust someone with that much power". lex has as much power as supes, maybe not in the same way, but he can do as much good and bad Clark can do with his powers, and he wastes his gifts on a lifetime of trying to kill superman because deep down, he simply can't accept that there's someone better than him at something. No matter how much he trains his body, perfects his mind, acquires wealth, he perceives superman as always out of his reach. But once he does gain Superman's powers, once he finally has a chance to do what he always complained Superman never did...he wastes it. He doesn't try to benefit the world, he does what he's always done, acquire more power and try to kill Clark.

Those who have a negative view of Morrison, what is it based on? I mean this sincerely, I speak out of true curiosity. Full disclosure to help you get context: Multiversity was the first thing by him I ever read.
@manat317906 жыл бұрын
Grant Morrison is a great writer, but he has a clear obsession with DC Golden Age and Silver Age (1938-1973), which creates a few problems to readers. First of all, most of his works are overtly fantasy, imaginative, and over-the-top by modern standard. Thus, his works can't be digested by people who are too fixated by "realism", like some idiot comment I saw a while ago claiming a solar-charged Superman can't possibly stay alive flying into a sun. Second, Grant Morrison's runs in mainstream comic find a need to reference things that happened in something that are out of continuity for years. For example, his initiative of New 52's Action Comics brought back Golden Age's depiction of Superman to represent the more aggressive/reckless Clark Kent. His run is fun to read, but many consider it unnecessary because the New 52 was supposed to bring in new readers, and those readers were pissed off seeing Superman being a bully with superpower instead of a superhero. Some of his other works, like Final Crisis, are downright unreadable because of how complex and meta they are. Lastly, the guy brought back Barry Allen the Flash. Barry was the most iconic character in the Silver Age, but he was supposed to die and passed on his torch to his successor named Wally West. Wally is a joke machine and has been a fan favorite in his near 20-year run as the modern Flash. Barry is not a bad character, but many consider him to be a lot less interesting than Wally. However, soon after his resurrection, Barry created the New 52 with his "screwing up timeline" shtick, which also somehow erased Wally from existence. This cause a lot of fan backlashes, and Morrison was directly blamed for bringing the guy back in the first place.
@jeremycline95426 жыл бұрын
+manar31790 I appreciate your critique of Morrison; it helps me understand the long-time fans' view of him, as opposed to a more casual reader's

It's based on his stand-alone work like The Invisibles and a thoughtless, stupid comment about how Warner Bros "stole his ideas" from that overhyped series to make the Matrix films. It took me reading Final Crisis and Multiversity to finally forgive him. I think that deep down, he always knew that he needed these heroes to stay grounded.

The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen are crappy, overrated, outdated, cynical, and nihilistic comics that tries desperately to convince us why humanity doesn't deserve Superheroes.
