The voice of the late Lynn Nystrom makes this video classic. Great!

I remember when I started throttle jerking Steamers with Santa Fe Railway in 1945, we used Coal Oil, so now they us #5 Diesel. Great looking Steamer.

I'll tell you what there's nothing like being in that cab. Experience of a life time. Now next on my bucket list is to get a ride on the #844. lol

Bob Krieger is still alive, At least he was about a couple of weeks ago when I talked to him. Also I did not fire the 3985 on that trip. I spent 3 weeks with them firing it on the 93 Chicago NRHS trip later on after the Denver trip.

They also did a 50th anniversary trip in 2003, as a Sunday return trip. It dropped us off at the Terry Bison Ranch just across the Wyoming border, and it went back empty to Cheyenne. I need to post some clips from that. It stopped in front of the house I lived in as a kid in Platteville.

+Gary Plastek Hahahaha. That's what I think too. I'm just learning the practical skill of operating a steam locomotive and yeah there are a hell of a lot of valves.

@sgtredbluered it was the 40 th anniversary of a rocky mountain railroad club run with 3967 with wings so they redid 3985 to look like that run did in 1953 and changed her number for a day

Can the front and back drivers be controlled independently at all?

+vector6977 No because if one pair of wheels were working on the other pair were not then the train would not be going anywhere

I bet when 3985 returns to service, Ed Dickens will give it the trademark logo on the floor, which 844 and 4014 now have.

Skip, I notice in this vid, the 3985 has fairings. I saw it in Aug. 1992 and it didn't have them then, and all the other videos I have seen, ttbomk, 3985 has not had fairings. Please advise.

God,how I envy that man. If I could choose between being an airline pilot and a steam locomotive engineer I'd choose the engineer without a second thought. Incidentally...I've never seen a thin engineer, they all seem a little over weight. It must be a requisite for the job...'Only very large men need apply'. They must live right!

well I dont know Zack from the 765 is a horse of a man but he isn't fat, hes just a tall man, and rich melvin that used to be the chief engineer for 765 is not fat, hes about 6 foot tall or so though from what I remember.

SebRodz. SebRodz it was a one time thing, she was supposed to be dressed up as UP 3967, a sister engine that had smoke deflectors, they did this because ot was the 40th anniversary of the first excursion by the UP ever and they wanted it to be as close as they can to the original excursion so they dressed up 3985 like how she is in the vid amd egentually put on a numberplate that said 3967...

These machines were built in a age that predates the Clean Air Act meaning its grandfathered in. They can burn whatever they want if they wanted to. They converted to burn oil to prevent track side fire among other reasons.

Lol. Go live in a cave. Want to stop polluting the air? For starters, stop using electronic devices to post your liberal bullshit, since electronic devices use precious metals that need to be mined, refined and then shipped to factories where they are used to make cell phones and computers. What do you think powers those factories, mining equipment, refining equipment, and trucks, ships or trains that ship it....? FOSSIL FUELS.
