@@Icetemplar Macro is better than is typical at Gold. Apart from a few mistakes, Protoss controlled his units. The oracle being controlled at all and being pulled back is also not Gold level. Usually they'd just be a moved in, aggro on the spore, and die without killing a single drone. Also it's NA, and we know the reputation Americans have in this series. Remember that NA masters Terran who made 3 CCs before taking a single refinery?

Yeah that first game displays the power of being left alone... many players are great at macro games if they aren't attacked, though this game clearly shows someone who studied a build much better than most and this is the game where he was left alone for him to do his build the most.

Agreed. The hardest thing to overcome for me was defending early pressure. I used to build almost no units before seven minutes lol - I was that bad. Once I started practicing defensive build orders though, I shot up from gold to diamond. However, even as a gold, if I was able to amass a maxed army, I would usually steamroll the fight. I just really hated - and still do - having my “plan” ruined before it even started.

I have no clue how they've been guessing that wrong today. In the first round, the first adept dying to lings is already an indicator of lower than diamond performance. Then you look at the numbers and the zerg had 53 workers at minute 10. Sure he's not floating, how can you float with 30 workers less than you should have. Then again on round 3 betting on masters 1 for a terran stuck at 29 workers for like forever just because he was stutter stepping. Let's be honest here. Stutter stepping really is one of the easiest micro you can do.

The oracle micro made me think this is below diamon. Then I noticed that this guys actually knows to blink stalkers separately and I thought well then this should be platinum. But still I would this guy played better than average gold players, at least in platinum.

@@richardhauer8391 I'm diamond with toss too and I have way better oracle control - I'm just playing very rarely. The decision making was quite good, making canons, defending chokes. I went for diamond 3. They were slow, fighting badly, so I could understand it is low plat, but gold 2? Seems way too low.

Although for the first game I guessed D2 and I think they kind of talked me up to that with how they were praising the gameplay, but even at that I was shocked they both guessed Masters 2.

In the first game at 5 : 45 in game toss has not started a 3rd base and zerg is on 35 workers and both have almost no units. The macro and the builds were atrocious. I was shocked when they praised that game and guessed M2.

9/5/0/2, but I was the amove toss in the third game. I wanted to guess dia2 on the first round, but bumped it to masters because of the NA server lol The voids were indeed a reaction to scouting aggression, I was trying to play that 2-oracle charge build from one of harstems guides but got scared into voids and stalkers since I imagined terran was doing a 1/1/1 1base with a lib or something of the sort. Not taking gas also occurred as a result, since I was still on the zealot build despite not building them 😅 Meanwhile I'm happy to report I got to Masters this week, thanks to stealing the wall-zerg-into-nat 3gate pvz build that Harstem did in a vid, but with 2gate forge instead. Thanks captain for robbing it from whoever you saw do it 👍

Im so sad.. ranking is so hard, pros have no same conditions. First replays was so hard, other was pretty good! I would love to see him in finals. Almost all pros was worse than Harstem, he was better, but still have almost no chance for play-offs.. So sad.. I would love to see guys in play-offs who: has best score or has better score as Harstem in theirs episode. Cheers ❤

Explanation for the first game is ELEMENTARY: An actually good player (the Protoss) purposely (maybe?) screwed his placement matches so that he can get placed in lower leagues; and is now climbing up his way through the lower leagues. Either that, or it's just a case of small bro giving up his account to big bro to play on.

@@TillsterRulz How was the macro "god awful"? The toss floated at most like 1.7k resources (which isn't even that much if he warps in shortly afterwards) but mostly around 1k. He only started getting a bank once he was maxed as far as we could see. In gold you would see 2k+ float constantly as soon as 2 bases are up and it will only keep growing. This dude kept it at 1k with 3 bases and 70 workers. WAAAAAAAAY better macro than you would expect to see in Gold and it's not even really a question. Yeah of course his macro wasn't amazing but gold? Hell, I'm plat and I macro *SIGNIFICANTLY* worse than either of these guys.

EDIT: I checked the account of the protoss player and he has gone on a 23-2 streak in his past 25 games on the account so definitely not his primary account. On the first game. I think the issue is that we look at it from the perspective of the protoss player who mechanically is at D1+ level. Zerg, on the other hand definitely is far worse. Especially his control in the last battle is actually gold-level and since that's the only area we see him attempt any type of micro, that makes sense. My suspicion is that the protoss is masters 3'ish terran player off-racing as protoss and attempting some multitask-based style. His build and timings though were clearly off which made the game a little closer at various points than it had to be.

@@bruhisbruh000 Yeh although he did try to pull it away (slightly too late). I think at d1-masters3 you could see similar types of interaction. At gold level the toss player would likely not have the mouse precision at all to click on the oracle when it's on top of the army so. What I think is more problematic though is that the toss player doesn't attack at all with some of the stalkers when defending his base for several seconds. A masters 2 player would not look away from the battle for more than 2-3 seconds at tops here. Although I still think his overall mechanics is around diamond 1. Definitely far far better than the zerg.

@@jamomoritz6763 The fact that there is attempts at micro, multitasking with reasonable macro indicates that this is diamond+. E.g. you have 82 workers. The micro wasn't the best, it had to be a bit of sluggishess to it, but it was micro and attempt at doing some of the right thinks. At gold level I think the bad micro is much more obvious (e.g. what you see from the zerg at the last battle ). Thus I think it's more likely that this guy is offracing and his main is high diamond/low-master

The standings page on the Harstem vs the world website don't really make sense. What is "score" that is being calculated separately from "total points"? The person currently ranked first in the standings has more total points than some people lower in the standings. Am I just reading it wrong, or something?

23 points today. Pretty bad score, but considering Upatree and Harstem got 20 and 22, I'm not that upset by it. . . . R1: D1 (8 points) - I feel like this is on the brink of high-level. There were some things that seemed Masters, and some things that didn’t seem quite there. Between M3/D1, I went D1. (This round reminds me of how much they overestimated my own submission in Solar’s episode). R2: G3 (2 points) - This was turtle-and-tech with low APM. But there was actual repairs, movement on the tanks, and the BCs and Ravens hit different spots. R3: GM (8 points) - I could be mistaken, but I feel I’ve watched this very game (and names have been altered). Update: I was mistaken. R4: G1 (5 points) - I don’t even know what to think. It seems low-ish level. So this is a ballpark answer.

The protoss actually controlled his units, if not amazingly at least at a decent level. When I think of gold, I think of literally no control at all, let alone pulling back individual units during a fight, some stutter stepping and decent blinks.

Have you been in gold? This is a myth that people don't try to control and use groups. Gold is where people short circuit a lot and lose focus. Think of it as being between tunnel vision and not. It's hard for a lot of people to stay broadly aware while also being flexible and this is the type you find in gold, sometimes platinum. There was no indicator in that match of bloody Masters, let alone Diamond.

​@@MoVySaN The main point is that both the micro and macro were solid. You just don't find both those qualities together at the same time in gold, or even plat. And as someone who's diamond 2 with all races, frankly speaking the control was better than what I've seen from the majority of opponents I've faced in low diamond at least. There is absolutely no way that protoss is actually gold level. No amount of "short circuiting" or "losing focus" will keep you in gold if you play as well as he did in that replay.

@@MoVySaN the guy was attacking the Zerg while floating no more than 1.8 k resources or so. Macroing while attacking isn't a thing in gold. If a player in gold could do that they would be out of gold in a heartbeat. But the protoss and Zerg were *both* spending their money while fighting. I was in gold myself, and this is way better. I'm plat now and it's probably still better. Sending oracles to 2 different bases at the same time. Attacking while keeping the money low. Good blink micro. That isn't gold my friend. If you are gold yourself, look at a replay where you are at 70 workers and see what your money does when you try to fight the other guy. It skyrockets. The protoas was spending it quite well. Look at 1:53 as an example: Zealot runby to distract the Zerg so he can attack with his stalkers while being out of minerals and not that much gas. That's legit multi tasking while macroing, that's not a gold move

Bro, what do you mean "they don't have control groups in Gold 2" ? I was mid gold until like 3 years ago (when i dropped the game bcz no more time), and I knew (still know) to use: - Shift to add units to an existing control group, - ALT to make a new (exclusive) control group, normally used for splitting army on the go, - CTRL+click to quickly mass select instead of the slower double-clicking a unit or selecting the area by dragging the mouse. And if I were to pick up the game for a few hours, I would probably remember some other tricks that now are slipping my mind.

I got most thrown off by the dronepull zvz, since that can work up until m2 if the opponents just happen to be terrible against it. the nonmirrors were easier to tell since they made a lot of classic mistakes

Partly thanks to this show, sc2 is becoming more popular via twitch and KZbin imo. So you see a lot of low level players mimicking harstem and Uthermal and such. Just because it worked out a little doesn't mean it's not still low level 😝
