What's happening with the mini
@robertcrowley65732 жыл бұрын
I have owned a couple of these and been a member of the owners club. The front of the rear arches and back of the cills are prone to rot because the gutter of the hood drains into plastic hoppers just inside the b posts. These hoppers then drain through a plastic pipe which discharges behind the cill. The plastic pipe easily gets silted up causing the water to overflow the hopper and run into the cill. Alternatively, people try to "rod" the pie from above and dislodge it from from the hopper. Very common and usually needs the inner cill mending too. I am no mechanic, just know this from ownership. P.S. If you need a new hood Jack R Smith vehicle trimmers in Swansea did a great job for me. Double skin mohair with zip out glass window for less money than I could buy a vinyl skin at the time. Well worth the drive down.

That's a nice little car, almost looks like an Elan. I take it you have checked the oil level? Over filling it could well cause the smoking.

Engine sounds sweet, no noisy tappets which is good. Another thought, these engines are designed for & need 10w40 semi synth oil, thin fully synth could make it smoke, “ Usually “ it is something simple on mk1 s, he says ! Mazdamenders is another great mx5 website, run by Wayne who really knows his stuff on 5’s

This one has me interested, Reckon these were the best of them, and I follow them a bit, They, (MX-5's), are very popular in Australia, but the 1600 engine is no where as good as the 1800. These little cars can be really made to perform well above their weight, Thankfully our Aussie weather doesn't make them rust prone to the degree of the UK and similar climes. Hope you enjoy your time with it,

You might want to budget for a new radiator as when they turn brown on top tank they get very brittle and blow out.......good score but with the car.

cracking little project,,have you got fresh fuel in it you never know how long been in there and what could been mixed,, but more likely valve stems or worst worn valves with that compression across all four pots top end..

Did the previous owner work on the engine and change rings, pistons etc..?? The high compression would be due to that, but then maybe they did not work on the head and didn't change the valve stem seals. The car is good and looking forward to seeing you spin your magic wand and bring it to mint.
@martincunnington21542 жыл бұрын
You both will make the car look mint,I'd go for valve stem oil seals for the smoke

I wonder do you need to build a basic shed off to the side of current one to store mini etc . Could be used as spray booth when needed not to have to cover everything. Really enjoying new projects. Thanks for sharing.
@jacksomb12 жыл бұрын
Wow, you hit the jackpot with this little MX5. If the smoke clears up once the engine has been running a while - good and warmed up, chances are it could well be the valve stem seals (oil passes by the seals when stood and settles on top of the vavles or in the combustion chamber and burns off when first started). Good news with the dry compression test- the takeaway from that is that the numbers are all so close together, so no real need to do a wet test. BTW, Make sure you get the water drain holes cleared of leaf mulch etc (that's what's caused the body rot). A trombone cleaner, or one of those flexible rails used for net curtains is useful. Good luck! Will be following with interest

I agree with you about the valve stem oil seals EJ. Overall the engine sounds perfectly healthy for it age.
@philtucker12242 жыл бұрын
(Also it seemed to take a while for the oil to get up into the rocker boxes, and then subsequently get sucked down the old and brittle valve stem seals). A cylinder head decoke and reassembly with new v.s. oil seals might be an easy fix. Nice choice of project boys, I’m guessing the metal bodywork will be your main headache as I think these mechanicals are a fairly bullet proof design. Have a great Christmas! 👍🎅🏼
@philtucker12242 жыл бұрын
Being such a great little project car worldwide, I’m guessing new after-market parts should be prolific. Subsequently I’m hoping you will opt for replacing a lot of those rotted body panels for new instead of spending lots of time and money on welding and body filler. I really love the Gold Leaf Lotus colour scheme by the way..
@jagvette12 жыл бұрын
First guess for the blue smoke would be valve stem seals.

Really nice project, love the Lotus retro paintwork. Been UK MX5, that will be the 90bhp 1.6, usually bullet proof, might be sticky piston rings ( more usual on 1.8 ) maybe worth an oil flush & oil / filter change. I can recommend the MX5 owners club
