Best “new to me” game I bought this year is Paths of Glory, without a doubt. I’ve been getting more into wargames in the past couple years and this has been on my radar for a while. I finally pulled the trigger and I am so glad I did.

Getting sucked into your "What is the best Battle of the Bulge " game, I purchased and began to learn and play "Enemy Action Ardennes" in the solo mode. This is my favorite war game of 2024 because it is the only non computer game I have played this year and I am enjoying the challenge of the hex and counter world.

The best new-to-me historical game would be Here I Stand. I'm very lucky to know enough gamers to table this on a random Saturday. Man does that game have a lot going on but it is so good. Everyone has always had a good time and people will stop by just to watch some of it.
@przemekbozekАй бұрын
Thanks for the news, as always. My best "new 2024" title is definitely Mark Herman's "Rebel Fury" - played all the scenarios and taught 2 friends, so clearly this one is sitting well. But it's followed closely by 2 older games, "Stellar Horizons" from Compass (finally got to play this bad boy over the summer, it was a blast) and recently by "Port Arthur" - a small game from Nuts! that I was really surprised by. It packs quite a punch in a little box it comes in...

Being almost solely a solitaire gamer, and a second hand game buyer (from Noble Knight), I have few plays of 2024 games, but of the ones I have played, Manila: The Savage Streets, 1945 has been my favorite. Of the "new to me" plays this year, Warfighter Pacific has been my favorite over all.

Of all the submarine war-games that I have, they have been more abstract in their mechanics. The sub on mission was either on the surface or submerged - depth was not a factor. However, with the release of WOLFPACK, all of that has changed. Its addition of TDC factors has also added a bit of realism away from the abstract. For this year, WOLFPACK is my choice for top game I have purchased.
@ZillaBlitzАй бұрын
For sure, It's great that we have a game that takes the submarine concept in a direction like this. I like both types of games, and I'm glad we have such variety. :)

The best game i played this year is carrier battle: philippine sea, from Compass games. A solitaire game and lots of big decisions to make. Its really about managing your flight decks, how much recon will i do, and how many intercepters in the air and bombers?? when do i launch? Do i attack with my subs, or do i shadow? Because one thing is for sure: The Japanese will launch all they got at you. And the rulebook is really well written. the sequence of play player aid reffers to do the rulebook, so if there is something you need to read, you know exactly where to look for it.

For the new game this year I’ve actually played, I’ve enjoyed “I, Napoleon;” for what I think is game of the year, I haven’t opened my copy, but the 2nd edition of “a most fearful sacrifice” seems to pop up everywhere (I’ll understand if it doesn’t count since it’s a reprint/2nd edition) Question about games like gladiators: blood & glory. Have you found that you can enjoy one theme with that style (like the hunters), but didn’t enjoy other iterations of the system? I bought western front ace and after a few attempts at it, I decided it really wasn’t my thing. But I love ancient history and especially the theme of running a gladiator school, so I’m tempted to go for this game.

Oh, sounds fun! I've not heard of that one yet. :)

Skies Above Britain (2022). Nice balance of narrative and agency, plus the best rule book ever. Unfortunately, I've only managed to play a couple of actual 2024 releases so far. I do have Wolfpack on the table right now so that's a plus.

Tough question, so many great games. My pick is GaleForce 9`s "Aliens: Another Glorious Day in the Corps" - new to me in 2024. Fast-playing, highly thematic wargame of the Aliens movie. So good that I managed to bring an old friend, an 80`s gamer, back into the hobby to play this.

Unfortunately, I don’t get to play much. That being said, the best new game I’ve played this year is Michael Rinella’s Manila: The Savage Streets. Thanks for the video. Cheers!
@ZillaBlitzАй бұрын
I'm going to have to give Manila a shot, looks like such a challenging game. And I hope playing more is in your near future. :)

I bought and/or played for the first time more than 20 wargames this year but only a few that were 2024 releases. So I’ll go with the best new-to-me game in 2024, which is the COIN series game Liberty or Death. Runners up: For the People, Paths of Glory, and Commands & Colors: Samurai Battles.

Hi Zilla, really hard for me to pick one but my GOTY is I, Napoleon by GMT games. I like the narrative of this game. Lots of decision making but not that hard. Feels like I become a Napoleon. Also thank you for the videos you uploaded. It helps me to better understand the war games. And also English(as a foreigner). Thank you and keep up with your work. Always appreciated😊

Vive L'Empereur by Blue Panther Games was by far the best solitaire game I've played in 2024! Terrific chit pull mechanic nicely replicates fog of war.

Bets game I picked up for sure this year is Atlantic Sentinels from Compass. Been waiting for a surface convoy game for years.

Such a great game from the gameplay I've seen, nice choice!

Best game that was new to me was MMP's "On To Richmond II". It is such an interesting strategic strategy game, with enough scenarios to stay busy for years. I just purchased Combat!, and am learning the rules for that (so it may show up on next year's list). Late to the drawing - congrats to the winner!
@paulwest8575Ай бұрын
Thanks Mike. Unfortunately, my last name being a 'W' means I am always the tail-end Charlie with regard to GMT shipping. They never mix it up so I will be lucky to get mine before Christmas, probably the early new year. I am looking forward to it. Thanks for the list; I am finding far too many sales and just not enough $$ to go around snatching up games. As you well know with print runs being what they are, there is a FOMO element with wargames now that we never used to have to deal with. It stinks, but I don't see it changing anytime in my lifetime. See ya!
@ZillaBlitzАй бұрын
Well, I can tell you that they are up to at least "S" with the Wolfpack shipping now, so only a few letters to go! The good thing about Wolfpack will be that there is probably a good month's worth of gaming in the campaign, so the gameplay for the cost ratio is pretty high on that one. And yeah, lots of games, definitely not possible to get/play all the ones we like, a time to be selective, especially in light of life expenses. :)

Zilla, Another great video For me I, Napoleon is the game of 2024

Best new game for me this year was "Traces of War" published by VUCA Simulations in 2023 (and I bought it from Noble Knight). Beautiful map and a great system that's very playable.
@ZillaBlitzАй бұрын
I really like that one as well. As you say, very easy to get to the table and play, and beautiful as well.

My best game of 2024 is Castle Itter. I haven't played as many different games as I would like, but this one was very enjoyable.
@ZillaBlitzАй бұрын
I've yet to try Castle Itter in that series. One of these days!

Hopefully there will be considerable improvements to Operation Rolling Thunder's map. Otherwise the game looks great.

Yes, I'd think it will look differently. Definitely playtest/prototype graphics at the moment.

My game of 2024 would be Red Strike by Vuca Simulations. I'm looking to get into professional wargame design myself, and Red Strike is a monumental effort that is hard not to be in awe of.

The favorite boardgame I played this year wasn’t the first time I played but the first time the kids from across the street played. Something had happened and I offered to watch 3 of the kids while they tended to the 4th. I broke out Milton Bradley’s classic ‘Hit the Beach’ which we all enjoyed. Why was it my fav? Because the youngest child (4) came over later on and asked ‘Mr. Michael, can we play that game again?’ Hooked. Nailed it.
@michaelkoznarsky7911Ай бұрын
And if I have to pick one for myself, it would be Circle of Fire: the Seige of Cholm. We’re using the boardgame to supplement a miniatures wargame campaign.

The best historical/fun game I played was Long Range Recon Patrol by Mike Lambo. Great solitaire game you can play in less than an hour with plenty of tactical choices for such a small (one page) map

I got a lot of wargames played this year, but not a ton were new. I think my favorite was a new to me in 2024 title, Pavlov's House. Great solo game with some beautiful pieces and a challenging story. Centrifugal Offensive was also really enjoyable, but I didn't quite manage playing it correctly so I want to try again before coming to a final conclusion.
