It’s so funny you say that. All my kids know he is my favorite painter for some reason. Thank you so much for the comment. About to share this with them and enjoy a laugh.

I'm new to Linux and plan on using this upon release as it's a really nice desktop environment. I will probably use Ubuntu 24.04 to get used to things beforehand but I like where Cosmic is headed.

Best of luck! Thanks for watching.

Great instructions, thanks. Did take me a few tries to do "CNTRL+O", then remember to press "ENTER" before "CNTRL+X". I also got a dialog box afterwards asking me to select gdm3 or Cosmic. I like the customization, though I would like to have the option to display the time in ISO 8601, yyyy:mm:dd rather than just 24hr clock.

It’s been a bit. Will have to make an updated video soon.

Actually you're just supposed to comment the WaylandEnable=false line, since it says to uncomment it to force X. But that works too.

I’ll try that next time. Thanks for watching.

This does look interesting. I might try it when it comes out and switch over from Gnome for a bit.

I dont know your hardware, but I test the Atomic Fedora image with COSMIC and the apps start immediately. And that runs from an external SATA SSD over a USB 3.0 adapter. Maybe the Fedora packages are better? But be lack of SELinux support prevent using it on a normal system.
@@Indra88155It doesn't, actually. There was only a recommendation to disable it to manually install COSMIC with a systemd system extension image.

Good choice of background music. It makes the whole desktop experience there feel pretty chill. But what's the actual benefit to using this desktop?
@TheLinuxITGuy8 ай бұрын
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it. For the new DE... When it is ready it should be amazing. More updates to come.

It's written completely in Rust and it potentially provides a cleaner experience than the alternatives out here. But it remains to be seen.

what about gnome extenstion or widgets

I’d imagine they are working on them. I’ll include that in the next update if they’ve got something.

GNOME Shell extensions are JavaScript monkey patches that are injected into the gnome-shell process by overriding internal functions within GNOME Shell's JavaScript code. It is physically impossible for them to operate on anything other than the specific version of GNOME Shell that the script was written to be injected into. COSMIC does not use JavaScript anywhere, and it is not based on GNOME Shell. COSMIC uses an applet architecture based on the Wayland layer-shell protocol. It is one of the first of its kind in the Wayland compositor world. GNOME does not support layer-shell applets, and probably never will. They would have to rewrite GNOME Shell from scratch.

Pop OS and Ubuntu look super similar and as of 22.04 I found Nvidia drivers work just fine. Also think Debian has just been a rock star the last few years. Is the Pop OS benefit the driver switcher? I have good news for you. I was able to get QEMU and a proper IOMMU passthrough setup going with the iGPU for the Linux desktop and dGPU for the emulation/Windows. Only issue was corporate policies over there at BattleEye. (Won't let you play games through a VM) So now I am pretty sure Linux won't be my problem in the future, just companies being weird. GTX 10 series and above has the required tech.
@TheLinuxITGuy8 ай бұрын
Sweet! Yea, Pop has a dedicated Nvidia iso so it’s a bit easier for beginners. I’m currently running Debian 12.5 + KDE. Love it.

@@TheLinuxITGuy Yeah. I was looking at Looking Glass, because Proxmox ended up way too complicated for me. I got a VM running, but passthrough didn't, but passthrough worked on Debian just fine with a few changes to grub commands and pci device blacklisting so I could use it through emulation. Server GPUs can partition and you can use multiple VMs on a single GPU. I play Fortnite with friends (Which uses BattleEye) so I have two options wait until BattleEye stops being weird with VMs or setup a second PC with just Parsec. That's a lot just for one game. lol

They need some soft animations, otherwise this feels like XFCE and not a modern DE that gives you feedback when you interact with a GUI element.

agh. Doesn't support high dpi(?) and the sometimes windows don't appear. Don't install this on a work laptop - better off trying it out on a VM. Pre-alpha means pre-alpha Was able to back out with `apt remove cosmic-*` - needs some more time to cook. BUT I forget how much work goes into a desktop environment. It's good progress overall. I currently have cosmic-term installed and it's fine enough.

I DISABLE Wayland... NOTHING works in wayland. I have had this since I found out about it a week or two back and it works PERFECTLY--- if I leave it in X11 and NOT Wayland. I have ARTIX on here also with the NEW kde6 in it-- and it Works perfectly-- INCLUDING the auto- tiling script-- IF -- I F I leave WAYLAND off!!! NOTHING works right in WAYLAND-- and when I turn it off- everything I had issues with works FINE!!! WAYLAND is a crock. It's only good for gaming anyway- and I don't do gaming.
