Across the nation, many old dams are being removed rather than being replaced. This strategy can not only prevent failure, but also restores the natural flow of the rivers.
@rodshop5897
@rodshop5897 4 жыл бұрын
Don't forget that flooding is a natural part of rivers. So removing the dam does not prevent flooding.
@putz4747
@putz4747 4 жыл бұрын
@@rodshop5897 ummmm. Yes it does. It you REMOVE the restrictions to the flow of water and don't cause it to gather behind an artificial wall, the DEPTH of the river lowers, thereby increasing the acre-feet of water able to be channeled by the river. The idea that dams CONTROL flooding is what the owners of the dam would have you believe, when in reality, they just wanna make $$$
@rodshop5897
@rodshop5897 4 жыл бұрын
@@putz4747 That's an interesting idea, but if it were true, then why do we have thousands of years of human history recording un-dammed rivers flooding? How often has this area flooded in the years from 1926-2019?

Jordan, I just want to encourage you on the GREAT work you are doing!!! I live 2 miles from the Tittabawassee River in Gladwin County and have been impacted by this. I traveled M-30 daily for work. You have been the least bias source of information and provided more than anyone else on what the current situation is. Without your exceptional reporting we would not have up to date information and unique views of what work has been done. Thank you for your work ethic and commitment to excellence, and of course congrats on your upcoming wedding! 🎉

Thank you for all the updates. The stone put in at the bridge is crushed limestone. It makes a good drain through it, and when compacted is like concrete. Looks like they're layering it with the plastic to drain off so it doesn't do like the dam did and liquefy.

When winter happens, it will look really beautiful. Jordan, would you mind doing occasional fly-overs to show the freezing state, sun glare, and thawing process? You could do a 4 seasons presentation of the lake with compilations of what you've already taken with what you will be filming in the future. It would easily win an award.

Truely enjoying your videos and seeing what we can not on our own. Be carefull about what you say, people believe it as truth. In particular in this video you made a statement about "wildlife returning" , this is untrue. We live on a canal on Wixom, seldom see eagles anymore. The Swan, ducks ,geese,herons, kingfishers are all gone. It is so quiet as we miss their sounds and activities.

So if no one is a load out on the old lake bed to see the falls or river because its private property, then all those lake houses that but up to the old lake shouldnt be paying lake front property tax now then right? I mean if someone else owns the property between you and the river then you no long have lake front property.. something everyone of those home owners should be looking into

That is correct. Taxes next year will have to be reassessed.

There is another channel called An Aerial Viewpoint who has a great series on the deliberate removal of a dam in Sandusky Ohio. There are a lot of benefits to allowing the river to remain in it's natural state. The city could acquire the land and build parks along the old lake bottom, allowing for more public recreation opportunities, and river access for kayaker, fishermen, swimmers, and bird watchers.

From what I understand from the beginning of the High Water mark on river an lake beds is not private property because nobody owns the river. I'm from Pittsburgh so some laws maybe different.

The dams owners were paying property taxes for the lakebed. Some of the lakebed property was forfeited for nonpayment. The FLTF talks about this in their videos.

Just my opinion, I would let it go natural. Thanks for your information on what happened. I feel sorry for all the folks who bought lake property though,ugh...

I thought the waterways in the United States open to all people to pass through and anyone has the right to pass up to the edge of where the water level can rise. I know this is a hot topic in some states with some land owners where the waterway passes through their land. What is the state law in this area?

I think the dams being rebuilt is far from a certainty. It will take a lot of money for sure. But it will also take a lot of regulatory approval. I am betting that the dams do not get rebuilt. But time will tell. btw I grew up in Saginaw and spent time playing on Sanford Lake.

@Michael A Have you Zoomed in on any of the Task Force meetings with any of the four lake's Associations , watched videos of those meetings posted later here, or visited the Four Lakes Task Force's web-site to review anything that has been said about the restoration of the dams and lakes?

@@green-gables I have reviewed some of the information. I think the circumstances are very different now than at the time the original dams were constructed. And those circumstances will make building a dam today far more complex and expensive. And the environmental impact will be carefully evaluated by regulatory authorities. So I will stick to my prediction that rebuilding dams is unlikely. The river will run wild again, and nature and people will adapt to the changes.

So according to the weather service, over the next week, the temps are gonna plummet in your area into the low 40s to mid-30s with the possibility of snow. Then warming up and then some heavy rain activity. So the river may get interesting.

Mid 30's and Snow?? LOL Not yet...Maybe upper 40's at night for the U.P. but not mid Michigan. Even with heavy rain, the river, will be just the river..
