I LOVE my 990's. I've been wearing these NB shoes for about 10 years, ever since an orthopedist who specializes in feet "prescribed" them for me. Seriously, they have my name etc. on file in the local NB store. They last forever (I wear them about 1.5 years then get the next version. I keep the old ones for years after that to wear on rainy days to save my newer ones. Just FYI, I'm an older woman with different shoe needs than some others here. Different perspective, same great opinion of these shoes!

Late to the show, but I agree completely with this review. I have owned 990s in the past. What sets them apart is their comfort and durability. I walk about 5 to 7 miles every day and I have to buy new sneakers every 3 to 4 months because the bottom soles separate. 990 never separate. I had to get new ones because I was wearing wide 990 and the extra room caused my big toe to bore through the padding. Get the 990 and support American manufacturing by enjoying a high quality sneaker.

This is one of my favorite reviews from your channel. I copped a pair from StockX and had them sent to me all the way to the Philippines. I've never liked NB in the past but it has always earned my respect. I'm now a proud owner of 4 pairs! As soon as I received the 990, I definitely saw the quality of craftsmanship that you talked about. I also agree that it's a comfortable shoe to wear all day and I have no doubt that it's durable. As someone who has flat feet and pronates, that plastic part on each side of the upper adds a lot of structure to the 990v5. Even with a good arch support and a runners knot, it’s totally necessary for me. I love the way they look, especially in the black/silver color way and they’re very comfortable for sure. But they’re also a stability shoe, and a very good one at that.

In my opinion NB shoes hit the "BALANCE" of cushioning and firmness making them great for all day wear. I spend on average 12 hours a day in sneakers at work and then some time at home and it involves a lot of walking! The super soft and cushioning sneakers just don't work for me, they cause fatigue somehow. After accidentally discovering NB JUST because they were on sale (373) I have been wearing them for more then a year and actually just bought a second pair a couple of weeks ago (574) BECAUSE I was so impressed with all day comfort. I can't believe it took me 12 years and more than a dozen different sneakers and brands to finally find them. I guess that shows how brainwashed we are and only look at the established brands while ignoring some great ones!

Amazing video. I wore my 993 10 years ago working night shift in a dirty hospital. 12 hour shifts running around and those shoes never killed my feet. The rest of the NB line is questionable but the 99x series reigns supreme. All the nurses know about New Balance since they have to stand for long periods of time. Just ordered a black pair of the v4 after watching your Dick's video and it reminded me of how epic those shoes were.

New balance with Kawhi made sense from the get go. Kawhi's personality and playing style just mesh well with New Balance. But it wasn't until I bought a pair of 990 that I understood just how well they worked together. Just like you said, this shoe is the Tim Duncan. Not flashy but gets the job done really well.

I have been running/walking/experiencing life in the NB 99x series of shoes since 1988 when I bought my first pair of NB 996. Before that I I had run in Nike and Brooks but found that they did not support my foot. Once I started running/walking in NB's, I have never bought another type of shoe. I am a heavier guy so I really appreciate the support and cushioning they provide for running and walking. They also last forever! The quality and craftsmanship of the shoe is excellent. I always buy my NB's 99X's in the NB grey color even though my wife kids me about it :-). Whenever anyone asks me about running or walking shoes... I recommend the 990 series!

I fell into NB later in life as had an outlet near to where I moved into. Scooped some 574 and then 530s for not much and have since not looked back. You hit the nail bang on the head as some of their models [this one included] may not have the flair & zazz of other pairs/brands; but at the end of the day - if you can get year long durability and continuous comfort and wear = what more is needed? Always admired the 990 from a distance yet to date not taken the plunge - seeing these worn for a year and put through a proper #lifetest has definitely swayed me to seek some out. If i was to do the same to some of my pairs for a year they would be beat to heck & not look half as decent as these still do! So yeah maybe a bit pricey; IMO paying more for 1 good pair vs paying even more for a few crappy pairs is a no brainer. Love the honesty and sincerity of your vids. Grew up in the DMV! Got a pair of 990v1 in 1982 as a high school student and have held New Balance near and dear since. I pay homage to the streets of the Central East that made this shoe and can't help but be amused by the place it holds in the Dad Shoe trend of the last few years. While its hard to consider these newer versions as serious running shoes (they are way overbuilt, but maybe for the trail) the quality, styling, and comfort of the USA made versions make them an unmatched active lifestyle choice.

You can put a waterproofing on the suede. It comes in an aerosol can. Simply treat it. Let it dry good and you are to go for 5 or six weeks. Nkiwax, kiwi….

Love the review man! I've been rocking the NB 990 since 2002! I had 3 grey pairs in college, and then moved to a sweet navy pair of 992's around 2008, then my all time favorite, the 990 Red NYC Marathon- which i scarcely wore, and still rock to this day- still feels good and the red suede looks amazing. Wanted a pair of 997S, but im going back to the 990V5 in a few days at the flagship store in Boston- cannot wait. Keep in mind, i still rock with my air max 1 ultra anniversary, and mix in a few AF1's and J 1's, but I always go back to my NB 990's when im going to be on my feet all day, walking around, or hanging out, that castle grey goes with everything! Just got a pair of the V4s today cuz I loved the V6s. Now I have two awesome pairs of 990s. There are differences between the V4 and V6 as far as the reflectiveness of the V6. Looks very similar and have a similar weight to em both. Super happy with both! Go get you a pair!

I got the 990v5 last year, and I am a loyal NB fan, and I have to say the v5s feel as good as when I first wore them. I work in retail and am on my feet for 8+ hrs a day, 5 days a week, and these still have held very well.

You can recondition suede in less than 15 mins if you have cleaner and a crepe brush. If you want them perfect it’s an overnight job and some dye. Also manufacturing the V4 (along with most 991’s and 992s) NB use 1.8mm pigskin suede on the vamp, mud guard and foxing that will naturally regain its nap from brushing with the grain so unless you cover it in petroleum or wax it should never be too messed up you won’t be able to get it look decent again. Well worth the effort for a pair of shoes that cost £190!

these are the best running shoes ever! i am a severe overpronator. this is the only running shoe that i have found which supports 240lbs while compensating for pronatation. Running 6 miles everyday my knees do not feel like a hammer was taken to them. other top of the line brands crush my knees and heels. I will say that the tread will wear within a few months of heavy running which makes the price upsetting sometimes.

There isn't a tougher sneaker test than the skate test, and after skating in hundreds(legitimately hundreds...NO exaggeration) of different brands over the past 30 years, I can confidently say that New-Balance is the most function oriented skate shoe out there. (you have NO idea how hard that is for me to FINALLY admit) I'm not big on the numeric modeling names, but I LOVE what those numbers represent in regards to the sneakers technology/construction. In the late 90's-mid 2000's there were LOTS of skate shoe companies making tank like shoes, and they DEFINITELY lasted longest, but for a grade based on overall utility, those "tanks" fell VERY short. I haven't really experienced the size discrepancy though. Maybe the numeric's differ from their more typical shoe lines/styles? If you have experienced this in the numeric's, I'd LOVE to hear about it just in case I choose that model for my next purchase online and can't try'em on first.
