Hi Ben, great input regarding the fitting of the Carplay, took your advice and fitted mine above the glovebox, whilst front facia panel had to come off, I've actually gone a step further and added the secret compartment, I've got the 2017 JCW that no longer had it originally. All the fitments are there ready for it to be installed. Well done keep up the great work.

@@BenRolfe Hi Ben, I bought mine from a German Company called Hubauer only because I had seen a forum where someone else had fitted the compartment and used this company. It only took six days for it to be delivered, I've got the black checkered same as you. The part numbers are as follows, Secret compartment 51459290341, the Black checkered compartment trim panel 51459321698 you also need 6 screws which I got from my local Mini dealer, 4x M07.14.9.200.941 (these screw the panel trim onto compartment door from inside) 2x B07.14.9.197.038 (these hold the compartment to the dashboard) you don't need to make any alterations the compartment slides in and clips into the four pegs that the original facia panel was held by, and the two screws to hold the compartment into dash, the holes are already present in the dash. Obviously you have to remove centre screen and the air vent again to get this in. Hope this helps. You should be able to order the parts from local Mini dealers, mine didn't realise that this would fit!!, it does look great, factory fitted standard, this should never been dropped by Mini.

Some people have hidden storage like mine where that panel is, so the space behind may be quite tight to fit the unit.

Hi Ben, good update! one more tip to add: While in carplay mode by pressing MODE button you toggle between audio of idrive (radio, etc) and carplay audio (spotify, etc). While in carplay mode with idrive radio active - you can select all programed radio stations by pressing respective buttons :). Reset carplay module - press and hold BACK button for couple of seconds.

Hi Ron. Awesome video and love the install one. Definitely ready to pull the trigger on this unit for my wife’s F56. She has the HK sound system so the sound should be amazing like you mention. Thanks Jacek for the tips on the audio switching between iDrive and CarPlay. I have one last question for both of you. Can my wife listen to the iDrive radio in the background and at the same time run the maps on CarPlay and have the directions fade over the radio? Orr does it pauses the radio each time it speaks? Hey Alexandre, thanks for the kind words. She can listen to the radio whilst still using directions via CarPlay, however, the audio won't fade for the navigation, I hope that makes sense.

Hey! There are specific units available for the EVO head unit. Mine is an NBT unit so I purchased an NBT one accordingly but there are EVO ones available.

Hey! This would be because the optical cables haven’t been transferred to the new wiring harness. They age green in colour and there are two of them which need to be transferred over.

I’m not sure about swapping the screens over, however, the box will be able to display either on the smaller or larger screen. This is determined by what you have the switches set to on the exterior of the box.

Just installed it in the states. 2017 f56 6.5" visual boost. Got mine from a different seller but same device. On left hand drive cars installing above the glove box is a little tight because the pink cable has to travel further. I was able to fit it in sideways. Everything boots up but I always get a black screen when connecting Android auto. Anyone else run into this?

@@BenRolfe Figured it out! So Android Auto technically has requirements for official wireless-capable devices (Pixel/Samsung phones). I have the LG Wing and after hours of research I stumbled upon this www.xda-developers.com/wireless-android-auto-any-android-phone/ Just had to enable developer mode in android auto settings and have it show wireless projection. Unpaired/cleared cache on anything that was connected previously and then attempted to reconnect again and after a few seconds the wireless came on automatically.

Hello, thanks for the video! Were there any miss-functions so far? I've been watching these things on aliexpress for a while now and found one comment that guy had problem with the iDrive knob - it used to stop working after 1 hour, and later he only could navigate with the phone. Also i was wondering would you consider installing the aftermarket rear view camera to your current car play setup ? I mean it would be cool to get the rear view when you stick in R. I've seen they sell like 25$. Thanks in advance.

Hey 👋 I’ve personally not experienced any problems with the box and have been on a long drive since installing. The seller is very accommodating and will be happy to help should anything go wrong. I currently have no plans on installing an after market reversing camera, however, it’s not something I’d rule off as of yet.

Hi, Ben. Thanks for the video. Any suggestions for getting the wiring to sit better behind the display? I’ve just tried to fit mine but the wiring loom connector is stopping the display going back on, and there’s not enough slack to be able to locate it anywhere else.

Hey mate! There is a black bar that runs behind the display from left to right. I found it easy to tuck the quadlock behind here. Are you on a left hand or right hand drive car?

I get what you’re saying re the black bar but on mine there is a wire that runs from the back of the original box, over the top and into the original quadlock and I don’t think there is enough slack on that cable to be able to move the connector down any further. It’s very frustrating as I got it working perfectly but just couldn’t get everything tucked back in!

Installed it today, everything works fine, but only (maybe) issue is, after switching to Carplay screen & connecting Bluetooth with my iPhone, when watching youtube or use Waze, the audio still comes from the Radio, is it right? Hey 👋 to enable sound to come out you have to select Aux on the iDrive interface. The options 6 and 7 are for a 360 camera and option 8 is for an external mic

Second, I've installed the andream box, and can get the audio to work with CarPlay via auxiliary input in settings, but when I switch to my satellite radio and then back to CarPlay, the audio's gone, and I have to set it up again in settings. Hey, Thank you for the kind words :) You should be able to press "mode" just underneath the screen and this will cycle between the radio and CarPlay, this works for me and doesn't require any re-setting up.

Unfortunately not, it’s actually the application itself that’s restricting this function. Some apps allow you to whereas others don’t.

Have fitted this, but cant workout the volume settings. The Apple Music volume vs the apple maps voice/tomtom voice volume are totally different. The NAV volume is a lot louder than Apple Music. Have you noticed that?

In the settings of the andream box you can switch between original and aftermarket camera. Switching it to aftermarket keeps your screen on the andream box, though it will stay black (or only reversing lines) if you don't have a camera. I believe you cannot turn it off entirely.

It’s working now!!!! 🤷🏽‍♀️ I didn’t do anything I was actually working on installing my dash cam and thought I’d press the menu button then I saw that it switched to the regular screen so I was like huhhhhh I pressed the menu button again ... Hey 👋 unfortunately it’s one or the other meaning it’s either the radio or CarPlay audio. If you wanted to listen to the radio whilst having the ability to take calls through CarPlay, I’d recommend getting the tunein app.

If I've read correctly it doesn't support widescreen Android Auto by default. However there are custom firmwares floating around that make this possible. I'm waiting for my unit to arrive, when I've installed it, I will give an update on this.

Android Auto works flawlessly wireless with full widescreen support. The out-of-the-box firmware did that by stretching it outwards, but an update to the latest (official) firmware fixed this.

Hey 👋 you may be able to install behind the secret compartment, however, if you can’t do this there are many other locations you can use to store the box. Also, you can indeed use the steering wheel controls to change Spotify tracks!

Hey 👋 the WiFi module enables wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, without that, you’d be limited to the wired option. It should also work with your existing reverse camera if you have one.

When using wireless you’ll notice a very slight latency lag measurable in less than 1 second, but this is standard when using wireless, pretty much the same as using bluetooth on the iDrive. However if you use a cable to plug your phone in there is no lag at all!

Hi Ben I installed the Andream MMI in my 2016 F54 clubman. All works fine, except when making a phone call. The person at the other end is hearing an echo of them selvs. Any tip on what the mic-settings should be?

@@universoul08 I got an update of the firmware from Andream, and it has automatic feature, that sends an anoying sound for a while, while it calibrates the settings. That works fine. Best result if running the calibration while actually driving.

Hi Ben, just to verify with you: in case of the HK audio system you do have to move the two green (optical?) wires from the main harness to the new connector, correct? Any other changes we have to make to the original connector, like with a HUD?

Hey 👋 I haven’t had to move any wires, the box it’s literally plug and play. All I did was unplug the connector from the top of the iDrive system and attach it to the new wiring harness and then plug the other end of the harness unit the CarPlay box. I didn’t have to move any green wires.

@@BenRolfe I did have to move two green optical wires to the new harness. Maybe because I have a few more features on my Mini like the HUD or the collision warning stuff. But all seems to be working like a breeze!

As far as I’m aware this doesn’t work on the touch screen iDrive systems.

Ben I had my F60 coded to add Car Play and purchased the FSC code to add Sirius XM as well. It cost me 300 USD for everything which is better than spening what I was prepared to spend. Thanks for your advise and guidance.

@@BenRolfe I have the 6.5" in Touch monitor and I have been looking for an 8.8" Touch to do a retrofit but I can only find the non touch 8.8'' monitor here in the states. As is I am happy with the results. I want to do the digital gauge cluster but will wait til my factory warranty runs out cause BMW/MINI can argue the fact that my vehicle was never made with a digital gauge cluster and void my warranty. Next to do de-chroming her.

Hey 👋 it is possible, however the new cluster is really rather expensive, I’ve seen it for around £690 brand new, then you have to go about coding it in which is out of my realm at the moment.

Hey! I have an NBT CarPlay box. This is the one you’ll need if you have a MINI dated 2014-2017. You can find them on eBay or even cheaper on AliExpress. They usually go for around £160

Doesn't seem hard. just make sure you get the t20 head to remove the bolts. All that is really needed is to re-plug a few plugs. Will probably do this with my mini since the nav system is not great and out dated in many new areas.

Do you know if you need to have navigation on your screen for this to work? I rang Mini and was told they could only retrofit CarPlay with the navigation option already there. Thanks

You don’t need the navigation pack for this retrofit. The one MINI have quoted you is a completely different retrofit installed by them. This is a 3rd party one that doesn’t require the navigation pack.
