Update GARMIN SATNAV Maps for FREE !!

So I take it that if I choose North America it will not download ALL of North America as a whole Map, but rather I have to choose each State Map separately and download that map and add it to my SSD Card and then choose that State Map as I enter it when driving?? Is this correct? Can anyone answer this?

Thank you so much 🙏 !! I did it first time myself. I followed exactly what you said for downloading the torrent file. Later I formatted my SD card and created a Garmin folder and copied the .img file into that folder. That’s it boom !! I can see the updated maps. My device was more than 10 years old .No need update software in it by adding device on Garmin website unless you want it . Just download the latest map and copy it to SD card and put it in device.

Thank you again for your excellent tutorial. I got a bit braver and added some of France to my UK selection, and chose the extra scenery option. The added detail is excellent, and it all worked first go, including requesting the special file with the added areas of France which had to be sent to me by email. You have given new life to my GPS when I had nearly given up using it with its almost ten years out-of-date map. A Gold Star to you!!

Nicely explained! Worked perfectly. I thought at first that the downloaded open source map would replace the existing Garmin map. But after listening carefully to your explanation and noticing in your video of the now TWO options in the Garmin menu, I see that my hesitation was unwarranted. In fact, I am now encouraged to load more countries individually. (I reside in western Europe and do a fair amount of traveling. It's a pity that it doesn't have the Post code search and the city search is very limited. To get round this I do my search using the old version and save it to Favourites, then switch back to the new version to find my destination.

Thank you, very useful. Updated maps for Eastern US with these on my mom's Nuvi 255W and also added Mexico maps to a 1450LMT. Note: Added a 16Gb Sim Card from Walmart to both to hold either these added maps or Garmin's map updates.

When I select North America, there's no option to download maps for the continent. When I add tiles to cover NA it says file too large. I remove tiles to be able to add my email and when I submit I get a message that it's still too big. Very frustrating especially that most others are a single download for North America including Mexico.

No idea why but I just received the latest map update for free from Garmin for my very old nuvi 255w. About every six months I cycle through all my GPS units (7 in total) and install any software updates available. In the past the only map options available to this unit was to reinstall the old map (I think it was 2009 year) or pay $59.99 for a new one which was never going to happen. For some reason, this last time they said a map update was available and it was to install the 2023.10 map. A very welcome surprise but I have no idea why. Maybe they've stopped supporting their oldest maps and have to offer something else instead? The only downside was that it required a large flash card, 4gb wasn't enough. It said it needed 5gb minimum so the next thing I had available was 16gb, but it worked just fine.

Did it exactly as said but Garmin does not read card. BOTH satnavs Hopeless! Just found out that Garmin do not recommend cards over 8gb so I have ordered two and will try again, so maybe my fault.

Hi. I did use this for a few days, but unfortunately the image does not do postcodes. I go to all my jobs using the postcode on the company worksheet. I have downloaded a csv file of all GB postcodes (over a million), just need to know how to add them to the image file. I use Linux, and have installed QMapshack and MKGmap, but can't find out from the web if I can do this.

I tried to use the file, and it won't find addresses that my 2010 file already has. I tried to enter in local addresses that are on my old 2010 file from the new file, and it won't find them either. The file doesn't seem to find ANY addresses the 2010 file does. Sorry..........any ideas.....?? It ain't be workin'...........

It is said in the video that we put the map file under the name of gmapsupp in the folder of Garmin. Then is there a way to install different maps and to use them concurrently ?

I haven't tested myself but you can add another map with name (i.e. gmapsupp01) and select in under map picker option on your device.

Tried it (Generic Routable (new style)). First disappointment: I can't download the entire United States in one shot. I then had to select the State of Maine, and then select every single individual map piece for the rest of New England. Next disappointment: the maps were not as accurately displayed as the native Garmin maps. For one thing, the roads are more crudely drawn, and do not come close to matching up with Google Maps or Google Earth. I cannot have confidence with mileage and time estimates if the roads are not accurate.

If you stop video at 6:38, you will be able to see option to select maps. If you upload additional maps (different countries) you can select multiple maps (activate maps for different counties (France, Switzerland, Germany etc) I hope my comment make sense :)

I am following your video on getting map updates for Garmin Nuvi but seem to be having problems. I have selected Generic Routable, TYP file None, Country Oceania Australia, manual Tile selection - blank and the last section Request your map. In this section it says (Make selection first). I'm not sure if I have made all the right selections. Under the line of the last section it says Loading data, please wait. It seems to be taking a very long time. Is this normal? Or is there something I have missed. Would appreciate your input. Thankyou. KG

+Ken Gamble couple months ago I sorted one of my subscribers map issue with North America. Loading data messenge stayed for a while. I started to think that it crashed. Depending on how large the reagon is loading will take more then couple minutes.

+Sabrina Del Balso Download standard version of the maps from this website and in Garmin setting deselect build in maps and select downloaded one instead. And you show see all streets. Please note that free maps are not perfect, but still they are usable. Drive safe!

I do believe your satnav can have more than one map activated. i suggest to download europe map in chunks and activate them all in SatNav device.

If you connect your Satnav to PC, you should be able to get access to folder structure on the device. This will allow you to upload file to the satnav device.

Do you know how good those open source maps are? How often do they get updated? I am looking for an alternative to Google Maps. It is a very bad app, but it does get updated a lot. New streets get added withing a few weeks on Google maps.

MRP - Haven't had any success with the download at this stage. I ran the computer for about 3 hours and all I was getting was the same message: downloading data, please wait.Closed the program late last night. It is now early morning so I have opened the program again and have started to run it only to be met with the same line of downloading data, please wait. Can you advise if there is something I haven't done that may be causing this long, long wait for the map to download

The File OSM Generic Windows.exe file is a self extracting file. If you don't want to use Winzip, Winrar, etc. It's an exe file instead.

I bought a new 8GB SD card created a folder on it named Garmin. Downloaded the maps as you said and extracted the file and placed it in the folder. It doesn't work. My Satnav doesn't even see the SD card let alone read the maps!

+Tubemonks before you insert SD card in to any of your devices. Would you be able to format them using SD card formater www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/ and then create a folder and copy the maps file. If this won't work. I will do some research on how to help you out.

Carlajane - same here on my 1310; doesn't see any new maps (Aug 2020). He doesn't say what type of a format the SD card requires, which is VERY important - NTFS, FAT32, FAT - What??? Hi MRP, thanks for the helpful video. After following your instructions my Garmin Nuvi 250W does not register the Opensource Maps on the opening screens. However when I go to Maps, More Data, it lists the Open source generic routable map I downloaded to the SD card. As I enter address info , house number , then street number, it does not provide complete address information on the subsequent list so I have to manually look at each location to ensure the correct one is selected. Any suggestions you may have would be welcomed. Thanks again.

It DOES NOT WORK on a Garmin Nuvi 265w. I have tried the regular map, and the "new" map. It will NOT find addresses that are even in the old 2010 map that came with my unit. Sorry. This just doesn't work.

Speed workings is one of premium features of Sat Nav. So far I've not came across free option.

Very informative and thank you for that as well as being clear spoken. (it's rare) lol I have a Nuvi 255W but I don't have an SD card. Here's the interesting thing. When I go into it's data through Windows file explorer, it shows it has 2Gb internal storage. There isn't much free space but if I am updating the maps, couldn't I delete the existing ones or move them to my pc and replace the file with the newly downloaded one? Saving the whole need for an SD card? Just a thought.

Better keep a copy of the old Garmin map, because when you find the new one does not support postcode (Zipcode) search or street search your new map might not be very much use at all. I am trying to find a fix for that, but so far no success.
