In this video Jeff will update everyone on a new study on the effectiveness of diatomaceous earth and the current thinking about how well it works on bed bugs. For years lab and field studies have suggested that DE is a suitable dust for addition to a treatment protocol for bed bugs. A recent study by the University of Kentucky which used DE as a stand-alone tool in an attempt to control bed bugs did not find positive results on its effectiveness. While these findings were enough reason for Jeff to change BedBug Central's protocol from using DE to Cimexa dust, he does not think it's a reason to state that DE does not work for bed bugs. We have known all along that DE is not a tool that should be used by itself to control bed bugs. It has always been recommended that it is used with other tools and the study by the University of Kentucky confirms this. While it is Jeff's position that there may be other low-impact dusts that may provide better results with bed bugs, if DE is used with other pesticides as part of a comprehensive bed bug protocol other studies have suggested it can have positive effects.

DE worked 100% my mother in law had them so bad her bed looked like the edges were covered in mud!! We first got all the clothes out, washed and bagged, we cleaned everything completely out, than we bought bed casings, bought 4 round Tupperware bowls and filled them half way with baby oil, than we thoroughly vaccumed the entire house than finally we bought 10 lbs of DE for 18.99 free shipping!! Took a duster dipped it in the dust tapped alone the walls to create a dust, so it would be thin, went through the base boards, windows, any wood, light sockets and light switches, dressers, night stands and on the bed casings, closets around doors and hinges and around all the edges of the carpet lined against the walls. Took every picture frame down and anything else she had on the walls cleaned and spread DE on the backs in almost so thin of layer you can't even see it. Not going to lie, I have nothing to gain or lose, took about 3 weeks before she had her very last bite and it's been 7 months not one bug!! Go DE 🙌🙌🙌😃

I know that this is a bit late, but we successfully used DE in a 3 bedroom house that had a 6 month long infestation. It was really crowded due to hoarding so the bugs had no end of hiding places. No casings were used. Clothes were not bagged and washed etc because it would have been a hell of a job (after this episode clearing just one room took 100 hours). We had previously used an array of bug bombs and sprays to no avail. I am asthmatic and I fully admit inhaling the powder is not good for you but my family were desperate so we coated every bit of all our beds, carpets etc with this stuff. Even made a little pile of it on the bed and rolled around in it a bit to coat ourselves before going to bed. I shit you not they were all gone in about 2 weeks of diligently reapplying everywhere. I thought we were going to have to the burn the house down but we didn't have to in the end. Still wish I knew where they came from.

YES! Exactly what I did before spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars on useless "snake oils". I've had great success with DE, however you must be VERY aggressive and use the DE liberally. I buy 3 lb bags (white, food grade) on ebay for about $9 plus $3 shipping. $12 ~$13 for 3 lb bags is a very inexpensive bed bug treatment. Caution: 3 months does not mean the buggers are gone, they have a dormant regeneration period of about 3 months, re-treatment is a MUST! I found a 1 week cycle period for retreatment over a 1 year period kills all the little buggers and the newborn in the nursery/nests. I also use the encasement method to insure the 400 day survival between feedings for adult bed buggers are a MUST. ALSO: Lavender Essential Oil 100% Pure. I also recently discovered the little buggers hate Lavender Essential Oil 100% Pure. Cut 1 part Lavender oil with 5 parts baby oil and use as a body spray or in your dresser drawers. Closet and Drawer "Sachets" will deter re-infestation. Remember Grandma had these in her closets and drawers back in the day? There was a reason for that, an unspoken reason. I found 16 oz glass bottles of Lavender Essential Oil 100% Pure. for about $32 plus shipping on ebay. The past year I've spent about $300.00 and I'm bed bug free. Not to mention hundreds of other little bugger pests as well, ALL DEAD AND GONE. I have 6 cats and 4 dogs who live in my home, everyone is healthy and doing well. Nothing I've listed here is harmful to our domestic furry friends we love so much.

Bingo, these little buggers seem to build a tolerance to chemicals. The DE slices the "wax coating" (for lack of tech terms) that seals their hydration. I found them dead and flat as a fritter, dehydrated due to the damage the DE does to their coating. It's a nightmarish process. We all have family and friends who visit, so remember these little buggers are the worlds sneakiest hitch hikers. They nest or hide in any nook and crack that exists. Headboards, light switches, baseboards, on and on, places you can easily overlook. Places you can't imagine.

May I ask, did u live in an apartment or private home? Apartment buildings have multiple units so there's a chance they'll return. For a private home there's no place to go so once they leave, they're gone forever
@verlenedawson2064
@verlenedawson2064 Жыл бұрын
@@HF-rc1tr Bed bugs travel from unit to unit through the apartment walls, electrical wiring, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, door, windows. Putting DE in these places can help prevent the bugs from exiting or entering without walking through the drying powder, and help to keep your home bed bug free. It will continue to kill bed bugs for many years as long as it stays undisturbed and dry. Of course you can't invite your buggy neighbors inside or visit in their infested units.

We had two bed bug events. The first was a result of leaving a shoe bag on a hotel floor. I was getting bites and did not know what was biting me at first. When I investigated and found the cause by making a bed bug trap out of a two liter bottle, then it took a few days to find diatomaceous earth, and a few hours on the computer to find out how to use it most effectively. I learned that a light dusting is the best application, I use a plastic bottle as a "puffer". Since the bed bug seeks out blood, i treated the bedroom floor, the bed, under the bed, inside the boxspring, on top of the boxspring,on the mattress, and on top of the mattress which I covered with a sheet. I vacuumed weekly, and redusted weekly. I learned a light puffing gets them, and a heavy application tells them to turn and run the other way. I put a heavy application around each bed leg. I was bait, and the method I used worked. I used feed grade diatomaceous earth and was bed bug free in three to four weeks.

@Plainsman1300

Use either one for bed bugs. The difference between feed and food grades is that food grade is close to pure DE, and feed grade has content of DE and Bentonite clay which makes it appear grey/ tan in colour. I buy Red Lake brand of "feed" grade because it works as well and cost a lot less; and Red Lake make a statement on their website that it is edible. Incidentally, both DE and Bentonite clay are consumed by people as a health supplement.

@Debtwarrior
@Debtwarrior 3 жыл бұрын
I've just had an experience with bed bugs. 90% of results were from inspection and manual efforts - vacuuming all nesting sites, dislodge eggs and vacuum, checking last sites, squishing on sightt and an initial pesticide spray (that would have been ineffective a day later.). De was used over the last week and sightings/ squishing went from circa 20 to 15 to 2 then to sighting of dead bodies 2, then 2. No live sightings on days 6 and 7. De was applied on bed base sides and interior puffer application with very liberally inside, bed base top liberally, mattress bottom and sides puffer application matress top liberally. Floor around bed liberally, skirtings, carpet runners adjacent to bed liberally, and a general room haze left to settle on all surfaces. De Reapplied daily lightly using puffer, and this included sides of made bed over base sheet. On day three some sightings were in the day with the bugs walking pattern quite slow and distressed looking and they were easy to catch. One was found wriggling like crazy in deep dust so unable to actually walk. Also a thich layer was placed on the bed base at the head end and matress moved down away from headboard. This was a good idea as most of the bugs were living in the headboard and staying around headboard supports This was using about 350 g over the course of a week in one large bedroom. One night was spent sleeping in a dust mask with an application around the edges of the duvet and sleeping on top of the duvet... Don't think that made a difference! I read the kansas study and was surprised, my feeling is that it works well for the tail off, when the manual work is diligent and there may be a few left in places you didn't get to or who are travelling from hidings some way from the bed. I think if there are many and they are breeding, then it doesn't kill fast enough to seem like its working but if you've disrupted nestings, and want to pick up the stragglers it seems to be very effective.. But you seem to have to iterally apply it everywhere. The last risk I can see is that it might have caused clever bugs to go into hiding until you do a stupid human thing and tidy up too early and vacuum it all up. To get back to normal. Im aiming to do a clean up, vacuum, deep inspection of bed and previous hiding places, pesticide spray, then puffer with low levels of DE just in case. The last few days seeing kills with no manual squish and dried out bodies, albeit a small number is reassuring. I've yet to inspect with the larger dust piles for more bodies, but i would use DE again. Its like saying mine fields don't work because not all of the mines went off. You still want to surround your position with mines if you can!

It all depends who is presenting a product. If it's a DE manufacturer, DE is very effective. But when you ask a pest control company (like this guy), they will try to discourage you to use DE alone and they will say that there are other better products to use that would require you to hire them, hahahaha. My special needs brother had the worst infestation the exterminator has seen in 6 months confined to his room. They wanted 5k to heat treat house and 2k to chemically treat (mom paranoid of that)!? Wouldn't do just one room so for the last 4 months, I've been physically smashing the heck out of them...labor intensive, blood everywhere...kinda gross. Kept coming back...bagged box spring and mattress which helped. Discovered DIATOMACEOUS EARTH last month...have consistently applied with homemade applicator all over bed and anywhere they can climb up...is non toxic, but use a filter mask when applying, be patient (it doesn't kill eggs), and keep applying for at least a month to kill all life cycle stages, use a shop vac to remove if necessary as it can jack up a regular vacuum. No bedbugs today for the first time ever! 10 bucks for a bag of DIATOMACEOUS EARTH...consistently use it...it works!!

As we all know, people have different opinions usually based on their own experiences. In my case, about six or seven years ago, I was waking up every morning covered in these bites. They itch and they burn (although some people are totally immune to them so go figure!) and the bites don't heal quickly. Some bites will last Itch and burn for two weeks or more. So I immediately went researching and I found websites that were saying you need to 'bag the building' and then 'super-heat it' which is not plausible since I live in an enormous apartment complex. Two other tenants also were getting eaten alive. "You need a bed bug sniffing dog!", people claimed. After two VERY stressful years with barely any success at all, I discovered an article about Food Grade DE. I thought it sounded almost too good to be true but I did what the article instructed, bought a few 'air-pumpers', used in gardens for spraying all kinds of powders, filled them with DE and proceeded to spray the powder all over my apartment. Everywhere. Took a whole day and I did wear a respirator because the dust is SUPER fine. It is not good to inhale it. Two weeks after that day and night of spreading it around (I even shot it into outlets, bed frames, anywhere they could hide), I was completely bed bug free. Haven't had one back since and that has been at least 4 years. I lay down a new batch about once a month and I keep inspecting areas where I know that they congregate but they all died. Even the babies because the adults, after traipsing through this stuff, transferred it to the rest of the bugs in their hiding places. A few times in the beginning, I would 'catch' a bedbug and put it in a large plastic jar, like the big ones they use for pretzels. Once he was in there, I would slowly introduce some DE. Once I saw that it was walking through the dust, I covered it and went about my life. On average they lasted two to three days before they died. Now this apartment house is very old and comes with its own contingent of cockroaches, as most apartment houses do. But they no longer come in here because like bedbugs, this stuff is like razors on their exoskeleton and destroys them as well. In fact, if it's a creepy-crawly of ANY kind, this stuff (DE) WILL kill whatever it is. I have NO bugs in my apartment and it is all due to DE. For me, nothing else worked and this stuff works REALLY well. You have nothing to lose if you're at wit's end like I was. Just make sure you buy the correct type (Food Grade), wear a respirator and your coverage must be complete! Then say "Bye-bye bedbugs!!!!"

Tommy Boy Wow thanks for sharing your experience. I noticed a bedbug on my bed about a week and a half ago and like you, I went crazy researching. I even contacted an exterminator who quoted me $250 just to have a bedbug sniffing dog inspect my apt. So I could only imagine what actual treatment would've cost. I couldn't afford that. Then I saw so many good reviews for DE so decided to go home depot right away and pick some up. I didn't even wanna wait for overnight shipping. Only thing is, they didn't carry the food grade DE only the safer brand that contains some silicon dioxide. I got it anyway. So it's been a week and a half since I've been using it. I hadn't seen any new bugs until tonight I saw what appeared to be a nymph crawling on my bed. At first I thought it was a spider and immediately killed it with 91% rubbing alcohol. But that led me into another frenzy of research and based on image searching, it also resembled a nymph bedbug. So I'm wondering if this non food grade DE is working bc I put it all around my bed, in the outlets, in cracks on my walls, there's no way this bug could've gotten into my bed with me without walking through the powder somewhere along the line. Wondering if I should just get the food grade or does it take longer for the safer brand to work.

I CURED my BED BUGS problem 1. Steam your mattress completely. Vacuum it. Then put on a vinyl matress cover(only like 30$ at walmart) 2. Take all of your clothes and sheets and stuffed animals and anything else that can be washed and wash them in hot water and dry in hot water 3. Throw away any cardboard or anything you can thats near your bed. If u cant throw away, steam it hardcore. Clean your room and put the trash in a bag and immeditely to dumpster! 4. Use cimexa and dust EVERYTHING! (I suggest putting some in a bowl and using a large paint brush for walls and floor and a small one for cracks, holes etc. and apply it that way. DO NOT USE TOO MUCH. You should apply it so lightly you can barely see it even on something black. Less is more. But coat your whole room with a thin coat) This is key. Dust entire carpet. Dust all the floor boards. Dust your bed frame. Dust the walls. Dust behind photos. Inside holes in walls. Behind light switches.(just dont dust inside the actual plug holes in the walls. Could start a fire. The spaces around it you can though) Dust your tv. Dust your nightstand. Dust under bed Etc. Let the cimexa be. Dont vacuum it up or try to clean it for a week. Longer is better. Yes it will cause u to become dehydrated faster and might cause you to cough. But just smile as u imagine what it must be doing to THEM! :) 5. Put clear scotch tape around the feet on your bed. Bedbugs cannot climb on super slick surfaces like tape. Havent seen a bedbug in almost 2 months now

+FleaFree Organically just read up on it. Both silica gel ( Cimexa) and diatomaceous earth (DE) are comprised of silicon dioxide but their origins and manufacture are different. DE is mined from fossilized remains of microscopic plants (diatoms) whose hardened shells contain silica. Silica gel however is synthetically produced, often from sand, via various manufacturing processes. The term “gel” is somewhat misleading since the material is hard and often formed into beads or granules. Silica gel is also amorphous (non-crystalline), which greatly diminishes its potential hazard to humans. I too wondered how they are different and googled it, right away i found alot of articles about it. Its suppose to be 3 times more effective at killing, safer if inhaled too. this guy give all sorts of diy tips and Cimexa is just as cheap as de

I completely got rid of bed bugs with DE and 90% isopropyl alcohol. I was diligent and I heavily dusted inside my couch. The chair. Box springs and mattress. I layered this stuff on thick!! And I left it for a few months. It's still inside my furniture and box springs. After about 2 months there was no more waking up with itchy welts. And the bites never returned. Fast forward 2 years. We have new problem. I started getting bites again about 2 months ago... actually found 2 live bugs this time. I am pretty sure I know where they came from this time. My husband travels. Different hotel every week. He would not listen to me about not putting his bag by the bed. I think he brought them. Arrrgh. Anyway I just dusted the he'll outta my room and all around n through my mattress and box springs again. If you dust the crap outta your sleeping quarters it is possible to get rid of them over a couple of months. I'm confident in doing it again.

Also about Bed Bugs climbing up the walls, painting the walls with an anti- friction paint (the same kind that prevents marks, crayons from adhering to the walls, its original purpose) will prevent any insects from climbing or staying on the walls. DuPont has a make named Teflon® surface protector for Paint. This will prevent Bed Bugs from climbing the walls and jumping from the ceiling to land on your bed. Using the above methods with the normal, Vacuum, Steam, contact and residual sprays and clogging crevices with Silica Gel then if feasible caulking those areas will rid your home from Bed Bugs. We all will get Bed Bugs from outside sources into our houses at some point, that cannot be avoided however, PREVENTIVE measures are more important than active measures in eliminating them.

Dusting with DE the right way and creating a uninhabitable environment that continues to function like this is definitely not easy but seems like it would work for someone dedicated to do it until the problem is controlled. I've read that they can be dormant for a long time and come back years later. Stopping the eggs hatching where they are hiding and reentering any place without a chemical pesticide to kill them quickly is my concern.

buy DE or cimexa would work, buy a duster o use a soft bristle paintbrush, put a fine coat over and around the mattress and box spring, inside plugs, drawer, try to put some dust around, every furniture you have, inside nightstands, separate your beds from walls and put some tupperware on the 4 legs of your boxspring put some dust in them, vaccum, steam matrress and couches, of course wash and dry in the hottest setting, look for bed bugs in seams and folds, cracks, crevices, inside the drawers with a flashlight. you can see some videos on how to search for bed bugs. you can kill live bugs with tea tree oil alcohol at 96%(best choice) or 70% and some vinegar, like 100 ml of tea tree oil, 100 ml of alcohol and 50 ml of vinegar, you can do a repelent with lavender oil and 2 spoons of Sodium bicarbonate in 500 ml of mixture water lavender oil and sodium bicarbonate, put it on couches and your mattress, and your curtains as well, also keep the dust in place, and do not moist the dust, otherwise will not be effective, repeat the cleaning and mantain de dust in place every 10 days or weekly, good luck.

Do you sell any products for treating and getting rid of bed bugs idk y they keep coming back around summer idk if it’s the place I’m living at bc I’ve never had any bedbugs anywhere else I’ve ever lived and the place I’m at rn is the only place I have ever had bed bugs at and when I moved here I bought brand new furniture so none of my furniture I moved here with was old or used and even after the exterminator I saw a few left so I used some products that I had to kill the few that were left I was then rid of them for a while but just a few days ago and yesterday I’ve been having to kill them like roaches with a tissue Idk why they are coming back is that normal ? And specifically when I moved to this place I moved here in February of 2018 and I’m still living here but when I first had the bed bugs here it was getting warm around spring / summer and back to the exterminator he sprayed all my furniture and he sprayed a cloud in my house and I had to leave my house for about 3-5 hours this cloud he said was supposed to be a definite killer for these suckers bc it would suffocate them and that’s also why I had to leave bc I wouldn’t be able to breathe in the house with that thing in here so he told me it should settle in that time and when I get back I should open a window to air out any chemicals that I may smell .He actually told me he could save my furniture bc my mattress was safe he found no trace of bed bugs or infestation in my mattress I actually had a mattress protector on before I even had this bed bug problem not even thinking it would protect my bed from bed bugs but yeah he said my mattress was fine but when I took the protector off he still sprayed it and I washed the protector and placed it back on and he advised me to get a vinyl zipper protector and add one on my mattress for extra protection and so they can not hide anywhere and I also put one on my box spring however like I said I recently saw bed bugs again even with all I’ve done I have Vinyl protectors on my bed so where are they coming from where can they be hiding is the protector just Bs ? Sonny Jason Bc it shouldn’t be this bad , and for how long I’ve been living here considering I’ve sent exterminators to treat this multiple times means that there are a lot which means it couldn’t have been my fault bc with how much I’ve still spotted them after treatment they wouldn’t be able to produce this much in that short of time so now I have to figure out if my landlord knew and didn’t say anything and I do think that’s the case bc I had people living on the first floor with bed bugs. They actually put a mattress out with no cover over it and I saw bed bugs Idk if they ended up putting one on it later but I did see with my eyes they had bed bugs on the furniture they threw out and when those people moved out he sent an exterminator for this but I informed him the problem isn’t solved yet so he was aware from me telling him and I saw a flyer for the first floor as an open house and I’m just thinking he’s gonna move someone in knowing the problem isn’t gone ? He must’ve done this to me then , honestly I never knew what a bed bug looked like til I saw one didn’t know what it was looked up bugs and when I saw a match for the one I saw I felt disgusted for days since it was summer b4 I spotted one I thought I was being bit by mosquitos but I was greatly wrong if this is happened to you I can give you advice on your rights and your land lords responsibility in this situation this is all his responsibility bc I’m a renter he’s the owner of this house he has to send exterminators if his or her house has previous history any damage caused to you by the situation he or she is liable

Penny: I manage a sober house in a large city. 2 1/2 years ago someone brought bed bugs in from a treatment center. By the time I realized a room had them, they were literally crawling the walls. Here's what I did that got rid of them (no bugs for 18 months--try to find a pest control that will give you that kind of guarantee). First, DE works: "[From a] 2009 article “Bed bugs: are dusts the bed bug bullet?” in Pest Management Professional magazine by Michael Potter explores the effectiveness of various dusts, including Mother Earth D (which is 100% DE)...... [Diatmaceous Earth] caused substantial (>90 percent) mortality of susceptible and resistant bed bugs within four days and all bed bugs were dead after 10 days.” bedbugger.com/2007/03/30/faqde/#DEresearch 100% dead in 10 days. First, protect yourself. Clean the bed of visible bugs and eggs. Wrap your mattress and box spring in 3-6 mil plastic and seal it with duct tape. Wrap duct tape around the feet of your bed frame such that the sticky side is out (OR--put a coat of vaseline on the legs. This will either eliminate the bites immediately or all but eliminate them. Short term problem solved. Second, wash your bed linen weekly for the next 4 weeks, hot water. Third, get a powder applicator if you can afford a few bucks, or use a baby powder container if you can't afford the applicator. Buy some food safe 'Safer' diatomaceous earth from Home Depot--$10 for 4 pounds. Dust the floor of the infested room(s) with it. Let it sit for a month. This is a poor person's way of dealing with the problem. Rich people can afford pest control companies and repeated applications of heat and poison. The rest of us need a practical solution. The dust may make your place seem untidy, but be practical in your outlook on this. Two more things. First, the bugs may have already moved to another room. You now have the basic knowledge for dealing with them, and so you can apply that knowledge as needed. You can treat sofas and chairs the same way. Second, someone is certain to chime in with a warning that DE can cause silicosis. It can, if you breath enough. But you're 74 and something else is almost certain to kill you before you get silicosis. Moreover, your exposure is going to be limited and one would hope the likely damage will be just as limited. Good luck, and if you follow this advice, post your success in a month or so, so that other people can see there is a solution for those of us who have to live within limited means.

Please use a face mask (they make disposable paper ones with elastic bands to keep it on your face. I found it to be sweaty work.) when spraying. If you have a pet(s) of any kind, it's okay if they get it on their feet and lick it off, but NOT for their lungs. Put them in one room while you dust the rest of the house, and keep them in there for two hours or a little less. You might not see DE dust in the air but it's there. It's okay for us to breathe it once the dust is settled a bit, but not for a canary, cat, or dog. Also remember to cover your computer and peripherals while dusting. You can vacuum them gently, of course, but not dust them. I put down rings of dust around them except near the fans/slots. I found this resource on line. It has a lot of links to other universities and government sites. We're in the same boat as you. We simply cannot afford even one visit from a professional.

The university of Kentucky study he mentioned was a flawed study based on the results of 1 residence, the study started out with 7 or 8 residence but all but the one dropped out of the study for one reason or another. Jeff white makes mention of this in his Tech Talk "Bed Bug Management Strategies that Work". Don't stop using D.E. ....... just don't use it ONLY.

Some people are not successful at getting rid of their bed bugs with DE. Just as many failures happen with other products. Every case is unique and the reasons for the failures are many. They could be bringing more bed bugs into the home from an infested car, or public transportation, or work, or school. Or a guest or visitor could be bringing them in. New bed bugs can hatch from eggs after the adults have been killed. The DE has to stay in place long enough to dry them, too. The DE has to be applied correctly where the bed bugs will walk through it.

DE works just fine it takes time but yoy just need to dust it properly. University funding rules what they find out based on who funds them regardless of the truth. Therefore they have no credit period because you will find another study supporting DE the same year from a different university with a different funder who is supporting DE. And people who work in this field does not want to use a product that will kill the bugs right out because they will run out of clients and a way to make money from them if they don't actually get rid of them.

Well here's the thing. When you're talking about a low cost product like DE (very much like boric acid) and you have someone speaking who specializes in pest control and sells their services, what do you think they will say? Using a University to do a study is the oldest trick in the book. If you're impressed with credentials you may be inclined to believe them, however keep in mind that MONEY is the deciding factor in how most, if not all of these studies turn out. I had pantry moths at one time and most people said boric acid would not work but it DID work and I didn't have to mix it with anything - just pouf and go and in about a week and a half they were dead. Bed bugs are awful because they populate quickly and you have to wash or dry EVERYTHING. The key I think is that if you catch them early (before the nymphs reach adult stage) the battle can be easily won. I have tried Harris bed bug killer, 91% alcohol to no avail. I have a small tube of DE and will try it but I have no doubt that it will work and am going to order some from Amazon. In the meantime, baking soda will work just make sure you use just a fine layer or they will go around it. The best thing is that you can also sprinkle baking soda on your sheets! Since bed bugs are blood suckers try using deet and/or avon skin so soft (original scent) or bites and see how it goes.

I just found out I have bed bugs I have called top name exterminator basically was shown a video to scare me saying untreated I will have 38 million bedbugs in about 9 months and my house will be unlivable, but If I want to kill bugs eggs and all more effectively I would have to use heat and liquid which would cost for my square footage 2700.00 which I don't have, so besides the silica dust what else do I need to do and what other products would I need , I am still not sure what to do with the silica dust do I need to spread it all over the carpet as well on my mattress? thanks for your help

I'm sorry for the poor experience you had with the company you called, if what happened is true it is obviously poor sales etiquette, it is true that if left untreated it can become a significant infestation quickly but it shouldn't be used to scare you into an expensive decision, it's tough for me to tell you exactly what you should do unless I see the infestation myself and how bad it is, I always recommend bed encasements and interception devices as a starting point, I would also recommend bringing in another company to see if you have a better experience

I can't handle this. Guys, he's saying that if ALL you do is poor DE everywhere and wait it's not going to do much in the way of treating your bed bug problem. You're pairing this with vacuuming (which has been shown to decrease infestations up to 50% on its own), mattress encasements, heat treating in the dryer.... You guys are following a series of treatments that has been proven to knock out bed bugs. What you're all doing is literally what he's telling you to do - pair the DE with other forms of treatment. Show me someone who successfully treated their infestation using just DE and has not followed up with any other form of treatment and maybe I'll consider justifying your needless outrage, but for now I'm going to trust the expert.

I've been using kosher salt. It sells in 3 pounds boxes for under $3.00. Spread it out all over and it will do the trick. This is cheaper than DE and also less toxic. Also do be sure to enclose your mattress in a mattress cover. Also, I've been spraying my clothes with a Permethrin based insecticide. It is sold for ticks mosquitos but hopefull it will work with bedbugs. When washing your laundry use the hot cycle and dry in a hot dryer for at least an hour. Use aloe vera on your skin to relieve the itching of the bites. Keep at it and those nasty buggers will be gone!

fly spray has permitherine so no need to buy anything expensive, you may be eating too much sugar which will cause the bugs that naturally live on your skin to go into a frenzy and start biting you and jumping around that could also be the problem.

Another thing you can do wit the DE is to use baking soda or talc baby powder in between the sheets EVERY night. They have an oily residue on the outside of their bodies. They also breathe through their "skin". The talc will suffocate them and the baking soda acts almost exactly like DE. Cuts their nasty little bodies so they dry out. It is also much nicer to roll around in the good smelling baby powder than the DE which will dry out your skin too. They are very adept at sneaking around and hiding. I made boundaries around my bed so I'd they were having to travel a little bit they would have to go through it to get to me. I treated the box spring the mattress, headboard with a heavy dusting Then the top of the mattress as well before I put the mattress cover on. My little dog sleeps with .e so I didn't want her inhaling any dust from the DE. They are all gone. My sister came and stayed 2 weeks and informed me AFTER she went back home that she had tne.!!!! I could have eaten razor blades I was so mad. If you have them, for heaven sake try to be careful and respectful about knowingly taking them inside another's home!

I have pet birds, and need to know that anything I use cannot be inhaled by my birds, as this would likely lead to their deaths. I have 2 birds that are 25 years old, and I raised them from hatching. I would not want to risk them after taking care of them so many years, and the other birds are not that much younger then these two. I am very concerned for my avian members of the household, and there is no place to board them, exept the vet, which would be expensive. Then, I do not know how much risks remain in the powder.

The food grade DE dries out the outer shells of the bed bugs. There are lots of other uses for this wonderful powder. It can be added to organic flour, grain, seeds, nuts to kill insects so they don't eat our food. (Insects won't eat the non-organic food.) I add DE to wool clothing or yarn to keep the moths away. Some people use it for facial scrubs. It can be added to pet food and bedding. It would probably kill fleas and ticks on furry animals. It might kill head lice. (I killed mine by smothering them with coconut oil under a shower cap all day & night for a week or two. Just shampooed if I had to go someplace.) I think it kills intestinal worms. Some people dissolve it in juice or water and drink it. It kills all kinds of insects: bed bugs, fleas, roaches, ants, spiders. Organic gardeners use it to kill pests, but it will kill bees, so it shouldn't be applied where they will be.

I saw some bed bug specialist- comments in here, who probably aren't even "specialists", claiming DE doesn't work. It is nothing new and often used in Germany. They wouldn't waste money on it for long if it weren't effective. Of course how you apply it / combine it with traps decides wether it works or not. Don't be afraid of losing customers, there are enough lazy, rich enough, busy ones who will pay for your service anyways.

I've had great success with DE, however you must be VERY aggressive and use the DE liberally. I buy 3 lb bags on ebay for about $9 plus $3 shipping. I found 16 oz glass bottles of Lavender Essential Oil 100% Pure. for about $32 plus shopping on ebay. The past year I've spent about $300.00 and I'm bed bug free. Not to mention hundreds of other bugger pests as well, ALL DEAD AND GONE. I have 6 cats and 4 dogs who live in my home, everyone is healthy and doing well, nothing I've listed here is harmful to our domestic furry friends we love so much.
