Update on my 2023 m340i - focusing on some of the not great.

While I still think this car is pretty great, there are some pretty annoying things about it. This video will highlight those things after living with it for a couple of weeks.

Beautiful spec on the m340i by the way. Just want to comment to clear up your digital key issue. Best way to use the iPhone Digital Key is more to the left. Not on the emergency key hole cover like shown in the vid. Best location is where those lines are to lock for keyless entry, but front on the actual handle. Not on top, not on the right edge, in front. Those lines will not work to lock your car if you are using the digital key, you must manually tap/be near the door handle with iPhone unlocked to have it lock or unlock. Those lines are strictly to lock when using physical key fob. Also, the reason the mirrors do not fold is likely because you don’t have your driver profile set to detect your iPhone as a Key linked to your Profile. You must link them so the settings will take into effect. Either that, or in repetitive lock unlock it will not fold in, can’t confirm but the driver profile is step 1 to try. I’m a Product Specialist so I’m familiar with all features and functions of any modern BMW. Cheers and great review nonetheless.

This is correct. Use the digital key in express mode or even on your Apple Watch. Just touch in the center of the door handle. In 7 months I’ve never used my real key once

Just to add to this, I put the top right part of my iPhone on the 3 lines and it works without issue. Every time. Also, my mirrors go in - it’s a setting in idrive. Your digital key has separate settings from your physical key. I agree it’s no where as good as the Tesla but I’ve found it to be very serviceable. Especially when I can’t find my key. Beautiful spec.

I have the same car 1. Electronic key. Meh. Just use comfort access or the plipper 2. I hate the gear toggle 3. Fake sounds are an abomination 4. You're right about iDrive7 being less of a faff. Driver interface is way too fiddly 5. I miss the physical buttons for heating and ventilation 6, the charging pad is too small That said, this is an absolutely fabulous car

I know you’ve received feedback on the digital key, but I use it often and it always works. I have express mode on but i do not bring up the keys in my digital wallet. I walk up to my vehicle touch or hover over the door handle lock ridges and it unlocks. I also do not bring up the digital wallet while setting it in the tray, it’ll auto authenticate then let you start. If you have an Apple Watch you can also unlock the car that way. I have a ‘22 m240i & used both 14 pro and had 13 pro. Love the color btw!

Put the phone flat with the top edge near the middle of the door handle about half an inch away and it will unlock. It works with locking the car as well and this works with my 21’M340i.

Because this car (and I-drive 8) are still pretty new. I think some bugs are to be expected, altough it would ofcourse be ideal that everything works flawlessly. A lot of things can still be solved or added trough software updates. Let's hope BMW does that :)

Iconic sound when it is disabled, it disables exhaust flap in any mode, even in sport+.

The mirrors fold when locking from the app you must have the setting off & as per using your phone to lock/unlock on iOS there is a widget you can add to your Home Screen it works a lot better. Sweet ride congratulations on your purchase

1. You slide your phone on the door handle to unlock digitally, works everytime for me, even to lock it. 2. You can set your temp controls for the auto on and off/ so it prioritizes temp control over saving fuel; e.g. setting max AC as always on if you're in warm climate 3. Reflection off the screen, if you're getting the car brand new, don't let the dealership take off the protective film, it is anti-glare and anti-fingerprint; I've kept mine on and it's so much cleaner. 4. iDrive 7 was better than 8, climate rules aren't in 8, like i had it set that if it's less than 10 degree celsius outside, seat heating and steering wheel heating would auto turn on, i can't do that anymore (or i've not found how to do it) 5. iconic sound also controls the valved exhaust, e.g. it doesn't pop and bang in eco or comfort, but in sports, but if you turn it off, it turns off the valves. Pops and bangs DO NOT come from speakers.

Unfortunately- pops and bangs do come from the speakers. It's weird because the exhaust does make some pops and bangs by itself but the speakers make separate ones. It's pretty annoying once you drive with the windows down and realize.

The card key takes some getting use to. Just a small learning curve. Personally, I make sure top of phone is perpendicular to the center of the handle. Works well

There’s a 2 inch wide strip for the digital key right in the middle of the door handle. The 5 inch space where you grab the handle, in the middle of that is where that 2 inch strip is. You just place phone parallel to the door handle (on 2 inch strip) and it will unlock/ lock everytime

I have a 2019 G20 330i, it has the start/stop switch but everytime you start the car it defaults to on. I always drive in sport so it’s not that big of a deal I guess. Mines also portimao blue and I love it.

Concerning the Digital Key, I got the same one on my 330i. You have to tap it right at the middle of the door grip - Not at the end where the little plastic cover is located. Took me some time to figure this out…

I have an android and works like a charm. You put your phone where your NFC antenna is to the middle of the door handle to unlock and lock. To get the mirrors to fold, you need to make sure you select the BMW account you use in the car. Otherwise itll treat you as a guest.

@@CorbinWilliams supposedly it is better in the fully refreshed newer cars, like the iX and the new 7 series, those cars support ultrawide band CarKey tech and are much more reliable than the NFC technology used currently in the 3. They are supposed to work exactly like the key fob does now with Comfort Access+, but just with your phone, not the key fob. Time will tell if this fully fixes the issue.

On the auto start/stop I just lift my foot of the break and the car starts back up again or you can turn your steering wheel either way and it’ll start. I know what you mean about it sucking on hot days when it’s stopped😅

Did your car come on Bridgestone Turanza 5 runflats like they do here in UK ? My biggest gripe with the 340i is bad road roar on coarse surfaces and an over firm ride even in comfort mode. I am considering changing to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, I'm sure this will improve the ride but I'm not sure about the noise?

Quick question for you to try with the Auto Shut Down or whatever it's called. Is it possible to turn it off in the menu and then customize to your profile? So that everytime you sign into your profile it is automatically off?

I've also had my 2022 m440i for half a year now. The most disappointing thing is the sound. It doesn't sound fake per se but you definitely know that its fake switching between drive modes. I recently went and test drove a 2021 x3 m40i, and it had a LOT of pops and bangs and it was all real too. The salesperson told me that after the mild hybrid system was integrated in the vehicles, the pop are pretty much non existent. He told me that he had installed the OEM M performance exhaust and that made his car super loud, and perhaps taking the muffler out would also do it, but that'll void the warranty. I'm currently contemplating whether I want to install the performance exhaust but that's a 3000 dollar piece. Anyone have any suggestions?

I have a M340I 2021, still on warranty. Car has a MPE and AA Downpipe, and other things… and still on warranty! An exhaust system will never be a cause of concern, especially if it’s the MPE!

I'm currently in a model 3 performance and my lease is up in a couple months. I honestly can't really fault BMW for having less than stellar tech vs Tesla because I've seen similar tech with Mercedes and Volvo also be pretty lackluster and non-existent in the Audi's. Tesla are miles ahead of everyone but thankfully, it should be a software over the air update if they do manage to refine that experience. We got spoiled at the top of the car tech mountain but even still, my tesla key phone app has been pretty dumb like if I have my phone in my pocket and carrying something with both hands I need to put in the trunk, sometimes the trunk won't unlock, requiring me to hold my butt up near the latch or worse, juggle stuff in my hands while I fumble to get the phone out and hold it near the trunk. Also, they DO make a sport exhaust for the car. I ordered an m340i last week with the m-sport exhaust and drove one at the dealer yesterday with that exhaust and the iconic sounds turned off and in sport mode, the pops are there. After driving both the M3 competition and an m340i, I feel like going with the m340 was the right choice. It felt more like a lowercase M5 than a less aggressive M3. The M5 has a much more civilized demeanor even when in sport mode than the M3C did. Having to pay extra to get lane keep assist on the BMW was a bummer. I can get that on a $30k VW Golf as standard. Absolutely no excuse for BMW to charge $1500 or however much it was to have that added. ALSO, again, coming from a Tesla, every car needs to have the hold feature where if you are stopped and press the brake pedal firmly, the brakes hold until you hit the gas. I use that all the time and I'm honestly going to miss that a lot.

Just a quick question. On this car, when its in comfort and your driving softly as you would in traffic or on a commute. Can you really hear the engine at all? Because in all honesty I want this to be a nice daily and want to make sure its pretty quiet (almost inaudible) when driving normally and just cruising in comfort. From what i saw in the video it seems actually pretty quiet no real engine noise no exhaust noise when you drive it normally. I test drove a 2020 M340i and it was obnoxiously loud but it was a used model and i presume it had a modified exhaust and it would be impossible to daily a car for traffic and such. :)

Now that I've lived with it awhile... 98% of the time, I'm just in carplay so it doesn't actually matter that much. Miss the physical buttons of Drive 7 and the extra screen real estate is kind of wasted on CarPlay.

Yeah - that particular display mode shows percentage and whether the hybrid system is active. If you shift into manual mode (by clicking the paddles or pulling the shift lever) it switches to RPM

Stands for Lifecycle impulse - it's a mid lifecycle refresh. Usually the body stays the same but changes around headlights bumpers and some of the sheet metal are common to freshen the style of the carS

Sport transmission will disable auto stop start as well but honestly there’s very little reason to disable it as it is very smooth and most functionality is still there with the engine off via the 48v hybrid system. As for the digital key, I find it picks it up when you put the top half of the phone by the lock sensor. You are putting it towards the side of the door handle, not on top of the door handle. You’ll have a lot better success both unlocking and locking it.

all b58 engines have had it removed for a couple years now since the engine is a hybrid the button is still present on the b48 models

@@mattbuffo9967 oh I see. My 2020 M340i had the button and 2022 M240i has it too. Never got to experience the mild hybrid. I guess it's only for efficiency and not really for the performance.

Personally i think the previous version of idrive looked better in terms of design. I don’t know why bmw changed their instrument cluster to these large tablets on the dash board which looks awful with those large bezels. I thought bmw was the only one doing it differently when Mercedes did the same tablet design on their cars. These tablet on dashboard design looks so awful.

The all digital screens are just lazy design without any after thought. The lack of customization is baffling. You are absolutely right, gauges are impossible to read with quick glance, the reverse tachometer is huge fail, removal of physical buttons. Overall all new BMW interior user interface is crap. It's designed by accountants not designers. G20 was already half way there compared to F30, this LCI just continues in the wrong direction.

You just need to know the right angle to unlock the car with your phone. The best tip that I can give you is look at the Apple demonstration with the 5 series and do the same thing.

quite odd. seems really like a downgrade compared to the last model. there isn't a good argument to go from analog features(buttons, tachometer, locking features for 'electronic' key, and fake digital sounds instead of just actual engineered engine tune) ... difficult to use, doesn't work as well, and isn't as premium of a feel. a bit disappointing, no?

This type of car seems too complicated for ordinary driving. I like just turning a key and going. No need to know how much power I’m using or other data on the workings of the engine etc. just a few knobs or switches is enough. AC and radio should be simple. Driving has gotten ridiculous with way too many things to know. I like the old fashioned functions best.

Dude. You’re putting phone in the wrong spot on the handle. Don’t put it over that oval.. the oval isn’t a sensor. The sensor is in the middle of the handle. The oval is a pop out in case you need to use a real key, so it no tech there.

Thanks! The genius at delivery told me wrong - I did another short video that showed me using it more correctly. It's still not fantastic and wish it was more seamless like it is on the Tesla. Apparently BMW Digital Key Plus solves this... but it's not available in the g20.
