I am so thankful you are recovering from your car accident. I enjoy your channel. I want to mention that in your video from 2 years ago you instructed to identify with your call sign and "to id", I am new and was watching your videos to learn how to jump on and i heard that from you. Just thought I would mention. I hope you heal quickly.

Yeah I realize that and that video was back when I was very new to the hobby and was going with the flow of what I heard guys doing in QSO's on my local repeater. It wasn't until recently when I found out that is just isn't necessary and redundant. Oh well...live and learn.. Glad to have you on the channel. I am recovering nicely and looking forward to getting back into the game. Thank you for the comment and for watching. 73!!

I was involved in a single vehicle MVA. I had compression fractures C6-T2. C7 was broke in 3 places and I had a broken rip along with a punctured lung. It will get better, it just takes time and therapy. I highly recommend a massage therapist that specializes in reflexology and kinesiology. Acupuncture can also help. I hope you get better quickly. 73 de KF0CHE

I found your channel a few days back. It just showed up on my You Tube feed. (keep those thumbs up clicks going people!) You fun to listen too and I get a total vibe of truth and honesty from you. Dude you rock! 💯 Yeah, it's an old habit all that CB-lingo stuff, emphasis on OLD (the 70's). I do have to catch myself as the ink is not yet dry on my license and the belt is prone to slipping on the pulley ie.,I slip up, oops. You are battling the age old department of redundancy department and it is senior to all of us. It was a good soft rant too. I send healing karmic energy your way and wish you a speedy recovery.

Hey Scott, glad to see you back! Also pleased to hear you’re on the mend. You’re accident has also given me great pause to driving and radios in the car. I’m really at the point where if I don’t want to bolt the radio down, then I won’t put it in the car. Pet peeves? I think “over” is totally unnecessary on VHF/UHF FM. It may be useful on HF nets but I haven’t heard it there. Only MARS nets use “over”. In Army MARS you say, “over” when you have finished talking after the Army MARS net control operator calls on you. When you sign off you just end with plain, “out” and not, “Over and out”. My personal pet peeves? Operators not letting the repeater drop before the net controller says, “Open for checkin” and not letting the repeater drop after saying, “ This is.” On HF? Hams tuning up right on frequency of a net before checking in. Tuning up or down a few KCs won’t kill your SWR reading. That’s it.
@HR4NT
@HR4NT Жыл бұрын
Thank you for that. I think you are spot on with that comment. I also notice that folks don't follow protocol on nets by allowing the repeater to drop before continuing. I guess people are going to do what they are going to do. Still irritating. LOL My ham radios are (or were) bolted into the vehicle. I don't see the logic in having one just floating around the car, but I get what you are saying. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!!!

Really like your content and certainly hope you've recovered significantly in the last month. As info, lots of prior service folks are hams. "Over" at the end of a comment and then "Out" at the end of a transmission was gospel to us as proper radio procedure. Never fear though, we vets are fairly adept at dumping stupid crap as soon as we figure that's what it is🤣.

So sorry to hear about your accident but glad to see you up and on the air. I will pray for a speedy recovery for you. I do have a suggestion for a short video. I saw in my QST magazine that there is a Rookie Roundup on April 16, 2023. I am interested in it but the instructions/rules are a little confusing to a rookie like myself. I got my General back in Aug 2022 but have yet to make contact with anyone. I have listened on my Icom Ic-7300 using my Buddipole in my yard until I get my window pass through set up. It's been cold and snowy in CO for me to do it. Anyway, If you could tell me what exactly to say when doing this contest, ,,CQ Rookies,- I get but they have a scoring sheet -multipliers, etc.. which I don't get and UTC time???? I'm in Mountain Daylight timezone. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
@HR4NT
@HR4NT Жыл бұрын
I have not gotten into too much contesting for that same reason. The ARRL does not explain things very clearly to assist newbies to be able to understand the rules and procedures and that is unfortunate. I went and took a look at the one you referred to and just when I got into the rules section is went south immediately. There are so many little things that you have to pay attention to to get set up, so I see where you are getting confused. One suggestion I have is to maybe seek out others who have participated in this before and maybe they would have a simpler way to break it down for you where it is easier to understand. UTC time is the universal time for ham radio, you just have to translate that to your time zone so you know when you can operate for the contest. I hope this helps a bit. Thanks for watching and for the comment. 73!!

I am studying for my Tech license and I like monitoring a local repeater on my scanner listening hams talk to understand how to talk when I get my license. The problem I have when most hams ID with their call sign they speak so fast I can't write it down. I started just writing down call signs as practice for when I start getting on the radio.
@HR4NT
@HR4NT Жыл бұрын
When you are operating and interacting with another ham, you can request that they repeat their callsign slowly and phonetically. If they speak too fast that can be very frustrating. Get well my friend! As far as “over” goes, I’m a MARS operator and “over” is proper procedure. The habit carries over to my HAM contacts. I hope your accident quickly becomes a distant memory. Love your work! Have you ever investigated MARS?

God bless you and your family. I wish you a speedy recovery. God gives his hardest tasks to his strongest warriors. Thank you for everything you have done for ham radio. I have followed you for a long time and have learned a lot. Keep up the great work. I know its taxing to make videos. Don't worry about it, take care of yourself, your health, and your family first. Us hamsters will be here forever. When you are healthy, we will look forward to a strong comeback . Be safe and get healthy. 73 Bob KD9IDD

Glad to see you back 'on the air' here on YT! Those are pet peeves of mine, too. It's worse when it is extra class operators doing it (over and/or "for ID"). Probably a losing battle but keep getting the word out; maybe the new hams will figure it out. Take care and prayers for a continued speedy recovery!

Hi Mark! Yeah I just wanted to mention that because it has been on my mind for a couple months and OI wanted to relay that info to new hams in order to not start a habit that might get them ripped on by others down the road. As for my recovery...working on it every day! Thanks for watching and for the comment. 73!!

Glad to see you back on screen. I hope you are doing well. I have to say I disagree that "for ID" is a bad thing. There are many people listening to the radio, and far more than will key up. Saying "for ID" let's non saavy listeners know why callsigns keep being repeated every 10m. All of this kind of self policing for lingo is why people get mic shy in the 1st place. Leave that Karen BS for the sad hams and let people come to their own conclusions as to how to communicate on the air. Especially when they are not violating any FCC rules.

"Over" is a military radio comm term. You say "over" at the end of a transmission, and you say "Out" when your communication is finished. You never say "Over and out." Anyway, that's military. It can be helpful in long range comm scenarios with poor reception or other "difficult" conditions. I don't see a use for it as a ham, though, especially on a repeater where transmission clarity isn't typically an issue (and repeaters frequently have a 'tail'). Maybe useful in simplex ops?

I get that. It's just in ham radio it is unnecessary. There is no law saying you can't do it, but the person on the other end might look at you weird...LOL Thanks for watching and for the comment. 73!

I would think that when words cease to come out of his speaker for a given amount of time that would indicate it was his turn to talk...Hey, whatever works. I was merely making a suggestion. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!!

On your video, "how to talk on a ham radio-making your first contact", you state in your presentation around the 5 minute 20 second mark (and you even wrote it in your power point) to use your call sign "for I.D." every 10 minutes during a long conversation. So saying "for I.D." changed? I'm still a fairly new ham and I just want to say the right thing.
@HR4NT
@HR4NT Жыл бұрын
I have been told you can do it either way, but honestly, when you give your call sign, you are at that point identifying yourself. In the video you referenced, at that time I thought that was the way to do it until I thought about it and asked around. I found that giving your call sign alone is just fine. You won't get in trouble by saying "for I.D.", but I think it is unnecessary. I hope this helped clear things up. Thanks for watching and for the comment. 73!!
