Update on the Yellow Cobra Cross, Fry & a New Strain

Great work on the cross! Man that koi female is great, a red ear even! Hope she drops good ones and at least gives you something to work with. I don’t like albino but I’d get them if they were big red ears.

Hey Doug, hoping that all is well with you and wishing you a happy belated birthday 🥳 I really like those yellow cobra males👍 Sorry you got shortchanged with that koi trio; hopefully you'll get sufficient fry to build a strong colony. Seems i mixed in a female of my yellow strain in one of my male grow out ponds and i got 2 female and 6 male fry from it having crossed with a dumbo ear mosaic male. I'm guessing that the fry are at least 4 weeks old as i was able to sex them. Both male and female can be described as half black yellow with black pec fins....i'm pretty keen on seeing how they mature 😉

Thank you Michael! That sounds so cool with that accidental cross. I don't have any idea what is in the back round of the dumbo ear mosaics. I would think the hb came from that side. It sucks about the albino koi trio but at least 1 female is prolific. I am sure the sliders are in the line judging by the guy sending me an awful male that should have been culled at birth. I'll keep my eyes on the fry and breed it out.

Very nice snake's, I'm impressed. Would be nice to see if the lace pattern passes on the backcross. So you crossed a snake female to a yellow male, that line carries the snake on the female. Now have you crossed the lace male to your yellow female's? If you did this then you would know to what extent the snake is carried. Maybe the lace is a male characteristic. Who knows till you make that cross. Keep up the good work!!

Thank you very much Ed! I should have written down some more back round info which made me try the cross again. I tend to just remember the jokes & not what I want to say about the fish! I was losing the snakeskin pattern in the cross and it was reverting to cobra. I picked the best 2 color males & went back to a red lace snakeskin female to try to improve the pattern back to snakeskin. My red snakeskin line is X & Y linked. The problem with going back to the red lace snakeskin line is some red will probably creep into the tail of the male fry. It's a work in progress. At some point I may quit messing with it & just accept the cobra pattern. Doesn't matter since I won't be entering any in shows. I may go back to showing some red lace snakeskin males.

Hey Doug: This strain you created is really amazing. I love the deep yellow color and pattern in the caudals. Do you have any plans to try and widen the Delta Tails like your Full Reds?

I bought the tuxedo Koi gabby’s first drop was 10 fry one fry was albino The albino fry turned out to be male so I am trying to breed him with a half-sister to get more albino koi guppies

Correct, that male should've been discarded looooong time ago. Albino koi guppies is what got me started, I now have black eye koi, snakeskin koi, tuxedo koi and a bunch of random koi culls from all the crosses I've made.

It Could have happened from stress in shipping but most likely is a fish that should have been immediately culled. If the fry do ok I will have a lot of work to do to improve the line,
