This video is an update about how I went about starting my private practice and the reasoning behind it. I also share why I am moving to the UK in September, career opportunities and progressions I have made over the past year as well as the importance of being patient with yourself and knowing you have time to achieve the life you want for yourself.

Congratulations! It's so cool how you have a published article ! If I may, I wanted to ask two questions. 1) During your Masters journey (and post-Masters journey) did you have to go and find your own supervisors or do the Universities/other institutions allocate supervisors to you (like they do in Honours) ? 2) Apologies if this is a frequently asked question, how many years has it taken you to get to where you are today ? (including undergrad, honours, masters, internship and any "gap" years etc). Thanks for being so inspirational ! We love to see South Africans thrive ! All the best with your journey.
@PsychIRL

Masters and internship you are allocated supervisors. Comm serv and beyond you find them yourself. It took 8 years.

I needed to hear the end of this video. It is so discouraging not being able to get into Masters. What would you recommend, more voluntary work, asking other psychologists to be mentors? I would love to get some more advice, you definitely inspire many of us.
@PsychIRL
@PsychIRL 2 жыл бұрын
It honestly is very discouraging. I'd encourage you to find out from the universities you interviewed at what you can improve on. Cognition & co also has a mentorship program that helps pair students with psychologists so that might help with better guidance for applications and interviews.

What are the challenges you have faced as a psychology practitioner and some of the challenges you are aware of that other psychologists might have experienced or are currently experiencing?
@PsychIRL
@PsychIRL Жыл бұрын
That's a very personal and context dependent question. It depends on personal experiences you have and that could be working within a challenging environment due to the organization or the clients, feeling emotionally taxed again dependent on your emotional resources and support and any other challenges other people have in their careers
@LordtheLavaithan.888
@LordtheLavaithan.888 Жыл бұрын
@@PsychIRL That's a very basic response thou,it is so on the "surface " unless it is all you can perceive at this moment. So religion or spirituality amongst other things doesn't affect how other psychologists behave in how they solve their clients or own problems in their lives🤔?
@PsychIRL
@PsychIRL Жыл бұрын
@@LordtheLavaithan.888 Again it's surface level for you. You asked what I'm challenged by and right now I don't have anything that's challenging me and what I mentioned were things I've experienced. Spirituality and religion have never been an issue for me, and like I side, it is a broad question and can't have a generic response because that would be person dependent.

Hi hi B. Have you confirmed with HPCSA if they will be accrediting your qualifications you would have attained at Oxford when you come back home? Will you be allowed as an expert in that field and still practise within the South African context? I once called in to check if I can further my MA abroad and there was some hesitance in terms of the training abroad and that we receive in SA. Especially when it comes to receiving practical training in hospitals.
@PsychIRL
@PsychIRL 2 жыл бұрын
I'll still be able to practice in SA and my qualification will be recognised because it's a Doctorate. Problems come in with masters but I'm already qualified so it won't be an issue.

I would like to find out where you did your volunteer work before you could complete your masters? I’ve been having a hard time when it comes to getting a volunteer position that would contribute to my skills and experience in psychology. Please assist.

I don't know if you see this or not but I'm from malaysia and my certificate can only work on private sector and I didn't know where to apply? Can you help me or maybe explain?
@PsychIRL
@PsychIRL Жыл бұрын
Hi Elizabeth are you qualified to practice in Malaysia? Different countries have different regulations for recognising international qualifications and certifications. It might be helpful to check which countries see a Malaysian qualification as being equivalent to theirs and if not, what would you need to do to bridge that gap.

Congratulations Bomikazi Lupindo you derseve it, I wish you all the best with your studies in Oxfoxd, that"s the best world university. If you would allow me to criticize you a bit, could you please never put weave in your head again😀 please do braids and afro only, other races should respect us through you.
@PsychIRL
@PsychIRL 2 жыл бұрын
😅thanks for the criticism but honestly it's hard to have braids or my hair out all the time and weaves give me a good break. Unfortunately with going to Oxford I'll have to wear them often for convenience.
@singathazwane8868

@@PsychIRL l think I don't like them in the heads of powerful black women, Michelle Obama was wearing a weave in an inauguration of Joe Biden and I wished she went there with an AFRO or any hairstyle that white women don't do as she was in the midst of them. Thuli Madonsela also wear weaves all the times and she was the first black influencial woman I heard on tv defending the Clicks racist hair advert, saying they did not mean what society thinks😅. Please elaborate on wearing them for convenience at Oxford cause mina angsafisi ukuthi uphinde uyigqoke
