The "Eddie Would Go" Waimei Bay surf competition yesterday had monster waves, they were commenting that the swell was pretty much split between California and Hawaii. This sucks because the Santa Monica Pier was an awesome landmark, this could have been worse if the entire swell had hit California. The environmental impact oftentimes heard over and over is “You don’t expect it to happen.” A commiserate approach long overdue for the explanatory indicator that it was already happening and it was a matter of time. The lag time between getting ahead of the curve is preventative accounting, meaning how much time is actually left before disaster strikes. As the young man relayed the story as he escaped along with friends from the crumbling pier’s collapse, like in a movie. So much so that in the end this badly needed reconstruction effort was too far behind the curve of the pier’s longevity and structural integrity based on weeks of intense storms that had damaged its foundations. In the end it still becomes one of a natural disaster. And the experience which follows rebuilt what was once there. Again, saving the pier from being destroyed by the sea 5:01 would have been worthy of its age, ages ago, whether it was last year or the year before.

Im a senior civil engineering inspector originally from the CA coast. It always makes sense to wait until high surf months to repair damage caused by high surf. Sheesh. Its unbelievable. How do the "engineers" figure anything get built and maintained in places like Alaska? It's called a construction schedule and weather considerations are part of the schedule. It is enforced on a daily basis and at some point the contractor will go into liquidated damages. Are they all from Kansas or what?

Surprised to see the end of the wharf fail. I've walked that pier since the late 1960s. Since it was just the narror tip that broke off I would nto be surprised if they decide to just leave it shorter like that and clean up the end of it. as it sits. I'm not sure of the history but the part that broke off almost looks like it was added on at some time in it's past. Double surprised to see the wharf's restrooms come ashore intact at the mouth of the San Lorenzo river. They built that poop-shack solid! I have had 2 warning messages on my phone today so far warning to stay away from the beaches and cliffs. Why does that make me want to go look more than ever? ;-) (I won't). Stay safe all!
